After some very enthusiastic discussions about the playground, P3 got stuck in collecting things from around the grounds that might be useful. Thanks in particular to Guirec for bringing in from home a wonderful supply of plant pots and corks and to Nadia for making a great start to our fir cone collection.

On Friday, Cargilfield became the Land of the Rising Sun as Form 4 enjoyed Japan Day on a glorious sunny day. The children arrived at school wearing some magnificent costumes: geishas, ninjas and even a sumo wrestler! The day began with various activities; sushi making, creating zen gardens and carrying out a traditional tea ceremony. In the afternoon the fun continued, as did the sunshine. Sumo wrestling in Ash Court proved very exciting, with some interesting tactics being used.

rightColBody

The age-old art of origami was one of the calmer activities, where the children had to use their growth mindset to make some tricky animal shapes out of decorated paper. To end the afternoon, everyone wrote their own Tanabata wish and tied it up in the Reynolds building. At the end of the year the children will open their wish to see if it came true. To finish the day, carp fish kites were created using bright colours and detailed patterns. The day was a great success. We are looking forward to the visit from a Japanese Diplomat on the 8th of June.

Cargilfield 156 – 3
Belhaven 100 all out

A very enjoyable match in glorious sunshine, fit for a Royal Wedding!

Cargilfield opted to bat first and despite losing the wicket of Hugo early on, an impressive stand between Adam and Logan saw both of them retire on 25 not out and set the base from which Cody and Seb could score freely and also make their full complement of runs in quick time. Aggressive running and good calling between the wickets was the order of the day, allowing us to post a challenging total.

rightColBody

I was very impressed with the intensity in the field that followed in the Belhaven innings. Cody kept wicket well, making one stumping and there were some super catches from Murray, Oli and Adam (the latter being the best catch of the day to win the match!) There were a number of strong bowling performances from Oli, Seb and Logan with Murray managing to claim a hat-trick: a feat that most bowlers never enjoy in their whole careers.

Well done to Finn for managing his field confidently and to all the team for the focus that they showed in restricting Belhaven to 100 all out. I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon with these boys.

The Cargilfield 2nd XI’s unbeaten run came to an end today as we were defeated heavily by a terrifically well-drilled and talented Belhaven team. They won the toss and chose to bat. On the smaller boundary, they hit many fours and a few sixes with the 20 overs they faced. Their top six batsmen were really strong and even though our bowling wasn’t bad, we just lacked a bit of pace. Our few highlights in the field were a catch from Alex P who also took out one of their strong batsmen with a great delivery and Isabelle’s bowling at the end which was quick and troubled their middle order. Nico captained the side, bowling 4 good overs and Ramsay also bowled well. However, in the end, their big hitting, combined with our rather lacklustre fielding at times, allowed the home side to reach 201.

rightColBody

After match tea, we gave it a good go but silly run outs cost us early on and we couldn’t get going. Belhaven bowled and fielded extremely well. Alex P was the top scorer with 21 and Fiona and Isabelle both hit boundaries but Belhaven’s bowling and catching was too good and we were all out for 80 after 15 overs. Yes we were missing a few players but it was very much appreciated to have Fiona, Isabelle and Sophie who all stepped in today and led by example in the field. It is fair to say our full XI would not have beaten this really good Belhaven team and we thank the home side for hosting us so well. The Cargilfield player of the match was Alex P for not only being our top scorer but for his dynamic and brave fielding – something we could have done with from everyone today!

The first boarders’ evening took place on Thursday evening and we were blessed with the most idyllic summer’s evening! The kitchen served up a delicious BBQ and then it was time for all sorts of outdoor games in the sunshine playing with friends and relaxing after a busy day in school. What great fun and it was a prep school evening at it’s very best!

So, it happened again! For the second week in a row, we batted superbly, scoring over 140 for the loss of only 3 wickets, only to see Fettes chase them down, albeit in a nail biting finish with 4 runs needed off the final over. It was, let’s face it, an excellent game of cricket and although we had more strength in depth which was apparent when the Fettes openers were dismissed their other batsmen found it hard to hit it off the square, credit to the opposition for batting so well and managing to chase down such a mammoth score.

We batted first on a glorious afternoon for cricket with picture postcard blue skies and warm sunshine – a day for which prep school sport was made! After Todd and Harry D’s dismissals, Marcus joined the skipper and together they put on 110 runs batting with great maturity, playing each ball on its merit and running well between the wickets; they accelerated the scoring rate considerably and when Harry departed in the 24th over for a very well made 53, Marcus found himself unable to get the strike in the final over and so finished unbeaten on 49. Another excellent knock and together they showed a really good understanding, supporting each other and only gave one hard chance. It was almost faultless and was lovely to watch. 142 – 3 in 25 overs would take some getting……or so we thought!

We changed the bowling attack round to allow others in to the game and perhaps this allowed the Fettes openers a chance to get runs on the board quickly and create a really good platform from which to build as they had to chase at almost 6 an over throughout the innings.

We had one opportunity to dismiss each of them which we did not take and it took a run out with just 20 odd required to get their premier player out, and suddenly dot balls replaced runs, the balls remaining receded, more wickets fell as the finishing line came tantalisingly closer. Finally, it was just 4 needed off the final over of the match, bowled by Findlay who had bowled beautifully with his accurate and well flighted leg spinners flummoxing the opposition batsmen. Dot. Dot, then a swipe and the ball raced towards the boundary to give Fettes the win. So exciting and a very different game to last week’s at Loretto. I was proud of the way the boys kept going, even though wickets would not fall, and in the end, we almost pulled off a dramatic victory.

Lessons learned? Well, the fielding was better, but there were a couple of misfields on the boundary when a single became four – these are crucial when the game is so tight. Also, we must pitch the ball up when bowling to batsmen who like to pull – early on, we gifted them too many easy runs which meant they got off to a flier.

However, a hugely enjoyable game of cricket and I was delighted to see us bat with such maturity, and also not give up when the odds seemed stacked against us. My nerves were shredded by the end, and both sides can take an awful lot from the game.

Sport teaches us great life lessons! Always.

On a glorious, sunny afternoon, the U11A squad made their way to our friends at Fettes Prep school for an enjoyable cricket match. We batted first and made a strong impression by managing to hit 180 runs against some solid Fettes bowling. Our calling between the wickets was clear and decisive apart from Edward who ran himself out on his first bowl and Jack who, having just been told by his Dad from the touchline not to take any risky runs, ran himself out on a risky run! Nevertheless, I was pleased with our batting performance overall. Particular congratulation to Harry who batted with composure and skill on his debut bat for the team.

In the field, we were sharp and attentive in general. A couple of overthrows and a miscommunication leading to a dropped catch were the only negatives in an otherwise promising fielding performance. The bowling was good on the whole, despite a few wides. Max deserves a mention for his four wickets and Ollie who took a brilliant diving catch in the covers.

Well played boys, it was good to see you enjoying your cricket so much.
