At the end of the Easter break, some of our Form 7 and 8 children took to the hills to work towards their Silver NNAS Navigator Award. This built upon the skills which were learnt at Bronze, but provided the skills to navigate away from paths focussing on the use of landforms and contours. On the first day, we travelled to the Lomond Hills and spent the day looking at contour features, including: re-entrants, spurs and saddles. They also used the compass to take bearings and to estimate distance using pacing and timing. The second day, in the Lammermuir Hills, focused on navigation strategies, including using 'attack points' to simplify navigational legs, and using bearings to confirm the direction of a linear feature. All of the children passed their practical assessment and now need to complete a theory paper, including a route-planning exercise, to complete the award. Well done to all of the children for their efforts over the weekend.
