Chapel Talk: Mark Agnew

Chapel Talk: Mark Agnew

Former Pupil's Record breaking kayak through the Northwest Passage

On Tuesday 20th February, Cargilfield is launching a series of Cargilfield Chapel Talks. We are delighted to welcome European Adventurer of the Year and former pupil, Mark Agnew, to talk to our Cargilfield community - past and present.

Former pupil Mark Agnew and his team made history in 2023 when they kayaked the Northwest Passage. They were the first to kayak the fabled Arctic route and the first to complete it by human power, with no motors or sails. Their achievements were splashed across the UK media and even earned Mark the title European Adventurer of the Year! The expedition took 103 days and was filled with jeopardy. Navigating through sea ice, avoiding looming icebergs, facing frightening encounters with polar bears and experiencing awe-inspiring interactions with whales - they persevered through it all. The team covered ultra marathon distances day after day.

But Mark's adventure career has not all been a series of successes. He failed to row the Atlantic twice. It devastated him and caused a mental health crash. To get back on his feet, he had to re-frame success and remind himself why he loved adventures. Mark took this newfound perspective to the Arctic and it was fundamental to his success.

This is an achievement for the history books and Mark’s story will have you on the edge of your seat!
