When blue sky turned to grey and hail stones covered the astro, only minutes before the game was due to begin, it didn’t bode well for what was to follow – but just as quickly the sky returned to blue and the sun shone brightly, enabling us to get the game under way.

Cargilfield started strongly but were a little too keen to demonstrate their fine individual dribbling skills, rather than working as a team. At the first ten-minute break it was discussed how they might perform better as a team and from that moment on, every effort was made to work together. Having taken a 2- 1 lead with goals from Jamie and Archie they looked comfortable until in the 2^nd quarter, despite some excellent goalkeeping from Alexander, Merchiston were able to draw level.

Tactics were discussed again at half time, where it was decided that our attacking play was a little predictable and lacked width. Determined to put this right Cargilfield battled through what proved to be a goalless third quarter, before allowing Merchiston to strike first in the final quarter. The team then rallied, determined not to taste defeat and produced some excellent hockey from Monty, Archie, and Wilfred in particular and as a result were able to find an equalizing goal in the final minute of the game as George brushed the ball neatly past their keeper.
