1stXI beat Strathallan

A convincing win

Cargilfield 1stXI beat Strathallan by 163 runs

Cargilfield 181-2 (Xander 51 rtd, Charles 50 rtd)

Strathallan 18 all out (Sylvan 2.4-2-0-3)

With rain in the air it was touch and go whether this afternoon’s game would actually take place, but as Strathallan were here and the rain had become a light drizzle, we decided to play although the going was certainly heavy, and soft in places underfoot! The importance of wearing spikes was there for all to see and on what was a damp, slow and low wicket, we chose to bat first.

Archie and Xander opened the batting and both started well in difficult conditions before Archie played across a straight one and was adjudged LBW. This brought in Charles, and together they batter extremely well, watchful in case of the odd good ball but were quick to pounce on anything wayward. Both reached reserved 50s before retiring, Xander off 40 balls and Charles off 37; two super innings, and with plenty of extras, we reached 181-2 in our 20 overs which was a very pleasing batting performance considering the conditions. I always say that you have to bat even better when faced with indifferent bowling and both boys were watchful when needed but ruthless to anything wide or short.

The sun then came out after tea and Rafa opened the bowling and took a wicket with the first ball of the innings and another one in his first over (he could have had four but two other deliveries just shaved off stump) and very quickly Strathallan subsided to 18 all out in in the 10th over, in the face of some very good bowling it must be said. Alex took two wickets on his debut, bowling some good leg spin, Monty and Ewan took a wicket apiece and then Sylvan took three wickets to wrap up the innings and finish the match. Bowling straight takes wickets at this level and I was pleased to see us focused in the field holding some smart catches, and we took wickets without using our frontline bowlers which is really promising for the rest of the season.

A very convincing win, so well played boys. Next week we head down to Melrose so let’s hope for better cricket weather!
