1stXI beat St Mary’s, Melrose by 10 wickets
St Mary’s 61-10 (20 overs) (Sylvan 4-1-8-4)
Cargilfield 62-0 (5.3 overs) (Charles 54no, off 23 balls)
It is always lovely to play down in Melrose, nestled at the foot of the sun dappled Eildon hills and we were fortunate that after the driech conditions we experienced last week, we were blessed with some warm sunshine and perhaps a few signs of the beginning of summer!
Unfortunately, we lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. Xander took two wickets in the opening over and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals throughout the innings as the batsmen found it hard to score runs at any great rate, ending up on 61 after their 20 overs. As usual, our bowlers bowled at the stumps and were very accurate and the St Mary’s batsmen found scoring opportunities limited in the face of some good ground fielding. We used six bowlers, and Sylvan was the pick of them this week, taking 4 wickets in his spell, just missing out on a hattrick!
We made very short work in reply, chasing down the St Mary’s total in just 5.3 overs. Charles batted superbly, scoring 54no in just 23 balls in what was a brutal display of batting, hitting the ball very hard and very straight, forcing the St Mary’s fielders to scatter and take cover in the face of the onslaught. Felix supported him extremely well too. That was it. Done. Game over. Total chased down in the sixth over.
Very well played indeed, boys. A dominant performance with the bat, punishing anything short or wide and getting the job done with the ball, as usual. On to next week and our final game of the first half of term against Belhaven at home.
