2ndXI beat Belhaven

2ndXI beat Belhaven

A wonderful afternoon in the sunshine!

Proper cricket weather at last and with the wicket a lot drier than a couple of weeks ago, the ball was surely going to bounce truer and give us a good game. And it did with Kit winning the toss and electing to bat. Those who didn’t get to bat last week were put in first and Archie R and Fred opened with Archie scoring some quick boundaries with well timed shots from some full tosses. When Fred was run out, Tristan came in and was joined quickly by Wilfred after Archie was caught with a good catch. The run rate slowed down due to Belhaven’s accurate bowling and brave fielding. They were particularly good at getting the ball into the bowler or keeper and had clearly been working on this in training. This was evident when Tristan was caught and Jamie was run out by a brilliant direct hit from fine leg. Harry came in to join Wilfred who was soon retired after facing 24 balls. Sadly, Kit fell first ball to a great delivery but, this allowed Archie B to come in half way through the innings to steady the ship with some well-placed shots, picking up quick singles. Harry was out LBW and James came in to make 25 not out with some terrific batting. When Archie fell LBW, Rufus helped us get to 109 after our 20 overs. After match tea, Theo opened the bowling. There were a few no balls in his first over but he did take a wicket, giving us a good start at defending our total. Zak bowled a couple of overs but it wasn’t until his third over later in the innings that he would get a wicket. Other wickets came from Kit (3), Fred, Tristan, Harry and Wilfred (2). However it was Archie B’s wicket maiden which turned the game in our favour for he caught and bowled Belhaven’s top batsman who, in his first ever cricket match, had reached 30; well batted, Maxine!

We bowled the visitors out to give us a 38 run win. Player of the match and match ball went to James for his superb knock but I was very impressed by everyone’s contribution and encouragement for one another today in the glorious sunshine! Well played, boys.
