2ndXV beat Merchiston

An excellent first performance of the season!

On a warm early autumn afternoon our 2nd XV ventured across the bypass to Merchiston for their first game of the season. This is an entirely new squad to last year, except for veterans in Alex L and Matthew V in the backline, but the boys have trained well and looked to implement some of this into a game day scenario.

Mack opted to receive the kick off and after excellent ball retention from our pack including Sasha, Wolfe and Max the ball ended up in the hands of our talented midfield of James M and Monty W. Both boys are new to the school, but looked to bring their club partnership into the Cargilfield system, this happened immediately with James feeding Monty for the first try of the game. This was to be a familiar combination as the game went on with another try following from Monty in the first half after excellent build up play from Maxi, George and Alex L. Defensively we were still finding our feet and leaked two quick tries to lead 14-12 at the break.

After a very positive half time discussion the Cargilfield men hit the ground running in the second half, with Theo A finding his feet in the game and scoring a crucial try after great build up from Monty and Leo. Thereafter, Merchiston began to dominate and only for some last ditch defending from Matthew and numerous try saving interventions from Oliver did we relieve some pressure with James and Monty scoring late tries to tip the balance in Cargilfield’s favour 35-19. A wonderful first run out and roll on Fettes next week. Well done, boys!
