U9/10 Touch drew with Merchiston

A terrific first game of the season

This was a thrilling display of Prep school Touch Rugby, which provided the perfect opportunity for our boys to play their first match of the season. With Merchiston arriving with a team of 10 players, both coaches decided to adapt the game to a 10-a-side touch rugby format, allowing us to maximise participation and minimise substitutions – getting more boys on the pitch playing was the most important factor.
Despite the limited time spent together, the Cargilfield boys, representing Form 4-6, began the match with a burst of energy, seized the initiative with three rapid tries, demonstrating excellent ball movement along the line. Archer and Charlie emerged as standout players, with their pace and elusiveness.

Michael's graceful leadership as captain, guided the team's defensive strategy taking what we had been working on in training into a game situation.

Merchiston, however, weren’t to be outdone. Their impressive running led to two quick tries of their own, keeping the match finely balanced. Our team demonstrated remarkable forward momentum and a keen sense of support on both sides of the ball. George's exceptional line speed in defense drew comparisons to the Springboks' style of play from Sunday! Rassie would be proud!

Whilst some players from both sides occasionally flirted with offside positions, the emphasis remained on keeping the game dynamic and flowing. We managed to extend our slender lead, thanks to Evan's superb finishing, but Merchiston relentlessly fought back, ultimately resulting in a 6-6 deadlock with just moments to go.

We had a promising opportunity to score in the corner through Teddy and Michael, but Merchiston's defense closed off the wide areas, forcing us into touch. The visitors launched a last-minute attack, only to be thwarted by the defense of Raffi, securing the draw just as the final whistle blew.

A 6-6 scoreline, left no side with the upper hand. Spirits were high as the boys headed to the changing rooms and later enjoyed a well-deserved match tea.

This match was a monumental milestone for Manrai, Jock, Leo, Evan, and Basil, marking their debut for Cargilfield and even more so, playing up with the U10s. Special recognition must go to Basil and Evan for their memorable tries.

My moment of the day was Ben, who, despite facing challenges in training, played with a smile on his face throughout and looked to get his hands on the ball as much as possible.

A particular mention goes to Hector, who exemplified the true spirit of the Cargilfield community by volunteering to bid farewell to the Merchiston boys and even assisting one visitor in locating his forgotten boots by running all the way back to the changing rooms with him. His actions truly embodied the essence of a Cargilfield Character and was duly rewarded with one.

Congratulations to all the boys for their outstanding dedication and sportsmanship. This match was a testament to the values of teamwork, and camaraderie that rugby instills in people. Well done to all involved!
