U13B Hockey beat Merchiston

An excellent team performance, boys!

Won 5-0

The wind eased just in time for our match against Merchiston today, which was a testing fixture. It was testing not necessarily due to the quality of hockey played, rather by the loud and aggressive tactics that the Merchiston boys used. There was a lot of shouting and cheering when the ball went out or a mistake was made, which could have been quite intimidating had it not been for the fine show of character and resolve from the Cargi boys. We knew the best way to quieten down the crowd was to score goals and although the first one didn’t arrive until the second quarter, it certainly confirmed the dominance we showed on the park. Against a physical and opposing team, it can be easy to be knocked off your stride, and I was pleased with the way the boys reacted to this, showing competitive spirit and courage, playing some good hockey, and scoring 5 unanswered goals.

Archie bossed the game from the back, making timely tackles and distributing expertly around the pitch. Jamie was a physical and determined presence that the team needed today to give strength and belief. Wilfred played well on the wing and looked to pass the ball early. Monty was skilful and keen to get on the score sheet. Arthur started at the back but ended up making a significant impact on the game upfront as striker. He showed super composure and slotted the ball well. James was tireless in the midfield and was always willing to help out in defence too. Alexander showed enthusiasm throughout the game. Mack didn’t have a lot to do but made 2 or 3 saves during the game. He also made a superb kick-pass straight to a Cargi player in midfield. Oliver was tenacious in attack and was desperate to get a goal. He set up a number of goals with unselfish assists and came so close himself too. Well played boys.
