Today the Nursery started their new topic on recycling and looking after their environment. Unfortunately there were no bins available in Nursery for the entire day allowing the children to see how much rubbish they produce.

introTextForm 4 head to the borders for the weekend.

Form 4 were electric with excitement to go on their first camp. We were spoiled with dry and, at times, even sunny weather. As soon as we arrived at Rock UK in Whittaugh the children made up their own beds and explored the woods. Some of the duvet covers proved a challenge to get on, but the children worked together and helped one another. They had great fun in the swimming pool, which was followed by pizza for supper. It was a cosy end to the first night, drinking hot chocolate and listening to a story. Saturday was packed full of fun-filled activities including zip-wiring, canoeing, team development games, low ropes stations and climbing/abseiling. After canoeing, most of the children very confidently jumped into the rather chilly lake with a splash! The zip-wiring included a tough walk up, but the view and the exciting zip over the lake were more than worth it. The Form 4 girls were inspired from their zip wiring and they made their own zip wire using various bits and pieces from the woods. It was very impressive and it worked!

On Saturday evening, we had a delicious dinner made for us, and a very exciting story about the Minpins. On our long walk on Sunday we looked out for the Minpins in the trees and listened carefully for the clanking sound. We had beautiful dry weather, with regular stops for tuck and stories along the way. When we got back to camp it was time to pack up and have one last time climbing the trees, making dens and the girls finishing off their zip wire. There was a lot of sleeping on the bus on the return to school. We are very grateful to Rock UK for a wonderful experience. Well done Form 4 – great teamwork! The instructors commented on how polite and friendly the Form 4 children were.

introTextAnnual U13 cricket festival a great success.
image/cms/resources/9d4ef669-ca77-41a8-9124-f98d3a0f5df5.jpeg
imageAltCargilfield School
leftColBody

Now in its fourth year, the annual 15/15 cricket festival returned to Cargilfield after the past two years down in Sedbergh and then over at Merchsiton last year, and for once we were blessed with the most gloriously warm sunny day – just perfect for playing cricket and evoked memories of summers long ago when prep school cricket always seemed to be played in warm sunshine! The first game of the day saw the 1stXI up against Sedbergh, and on winning the toss, Harry and Todd opened the batting and in the face of some fast accurate bowling, had to play with great patience and skill to survive, and kept the scoreboard ticking over with singles. They put on 64 runs in 11 overs before Harry had to retire having reached 25, and with a few lusty blows in the final couple of overs we reached 76-2 in our 15 overs. A fine effort indeed. We probably left six singles out there, and in the final reckoning, this would prove crucial!

In reply, Sedbergh were 12-2 after four overs after an excellent spell by Marcus, and then 35 for 4 after some probing off spin from Harry. Then the large Sedbergh skipper batted very well, scoring 29 off 16 balls before he had to retire on reaching 25; 69-5 became 75-6 and they needed 2 runs off the final over; another wicket fell, then a quickly scrambled two runs to get over the line. A very exciting finish and Sedbergh scraped home with three balls remaining. What a game of cricket and the 1stXI played very well indeed to almost snatch victory. As I said, we left a few singles out there when batting, a couple of catches went down and a couple of balls slipp[ed through the legs in the field: small margins indeed! However, a great start to the day.

rightColBody

In the second game, Sedbergh scored 90 and bowled Merchiston out for 30 as we then wished our visitors from Cumbria safe travels home. The final game of the day saw the Cargilfield side up against Merchiston, and winning the toss and batting first, we changed the batting order round and were soon 11-2. This brought the two Harrys together and they proceeded to dig in and bat very sensibly indeed, scoring 46 runs in a partnership which lasted 7 overs, putting us back in control and the sharp running between the wickets really did frustrate the Merchi bowlers which was good to see. Findlay then joined Harry A with licence to hit it and he did so, before Freddie came in at the end and scored 15no off 7 balls to take us to 94 for 7. An excellent performance indeed and a total which would take some chasing down.

We swapped the bowling order around and it was great to see Todd and William taking wickets and growing in confidence too; Todd grabbed three wickets in one over, and William grabbed a couple as Merchiston found it hard to get the ball away and keep up with the rate. We got two terrific run outs which was great to see and in the end we won by 11 runs and fully deserved the win. What a pit our regular game against Merchiston yesterday had fallen victim to the morning rain!

All in all, a lot learned today and I was delighted with the performances we put in. The highlight for me was Harry and Todd’s batting first up against a strong Sedbergh attack: real grit and determination with good technique on show to battle it out. There is a lot of promise amongst this group of boys and we look forward to the rest of the season now!

The highlight for me was Harry and Todd’s batting first up against a strong Sedbergh attack: real grit and determination with good technique on show to battle it out. There is a lot of promise amongst this group of boys and we look forward to the rest of the season now!

However, a great start to the day.

perch_rightColBody

Many thanks to the Friends of Cargilfield who organised a marvellous evening at the Sheraton Hotel last night. There was great food, dancing and a silent auction and it was lovely to have three of our pipers playing the bagpipes as the guests arrived to sit down.

As part of our Egyptian topic last term P3P had a go at mummifying pieces of apple. We had to leave our experiment for a very long time to work, and eventually got to check out the results this week.

The apples we tried to mummify in sand were yucky. The apples we tried to mummify in rice looked ‘disgustingly yuck’. But the apple pieces that were placed in salt almost looked safe enough to eat (we didn’t test that!).

It was fantastic to see everyone back in class today! P1H were out and about investigating the school grounds as part of our new ‘In the Garden’ topic. We found so many wonderful flowers and plants and talked about all of the different things we want to learn about this term. It’s going to be a busy summer term!

The showers did not put off the Under 9 girls and the sun came out as well allowing us all to enjoy a training session. Belhaven girls were there also and we worked on our rolling and long leg barrier, catching and throwing and of course our batting. We also had a short time to play a mini game with mixed teams. The girls made some new friends, improved their skills and enjoyed match tea.

It was rainy start to the season. We ran for shelter throughout the game due to heavy April showers. It was a new mix of girls in the U11 team, but they worked well together and used each other’s skills to their advantage. Issy was captain and led her team with words of encouragement. We started the first innings batting. The girls had excellent contact with the ball, and took their time to think about their swing instead of panicking. Almost everyone scored a rounder or half rounder in their first round of batting. Catherine risked it early on in the game, which unfortunately put her out. Issy and Saphira worked brilliantly together to get several of the Ardvreck girls out at first base. This was Flora’s first rounder game bowling in the U11s but she threw confidently and accurately. Hannah worked hard at 4th base in the second innings, stumping a few Ardvreck girls out. Alannah and Laura communicated really well on second base, calling to each other who would get the ball, without hesitation. Rosanna and Katinka made some terrific catches, which is something the team all need to work on moving forward. For some of the Ardvreck girls, it was their girls experience playing rounders: we hope it was a memorable one. Luckily the sun shone for match tea as the girls enjoyed doughnuts as they chatted on the grass. A great first game to get us ready for the rest of the season. A 33-5 win!

Cargilfield 292
Merchiston 252

The U9 team set off to Merchiston for the first match of the term. Despite only having had two training sessions and some of the team never having hit a moving ball spirits were high. The Merchiston captain put Cargilfield in to bat first and the boys started strongly. Charles and Xander opened the batting particularly well, scoring 12 runs off the first two overs. The batting continued strongly down through the pairs, James and Alexander both smashing maximums into the leg side. Cargilfield scored 92 runs off 12 overs, setting Merchiston a tough run chase. The boys continued their good form with the ball, racking up the dot balls with several boys only giving away one run. Cody finished off the bowling well, even picking up a wicket with his third ball. Some work to be done on fielding before the next fixture but well done boys!

The 1st girls travelled up to a sunny but windy Craigclowan today for a triangular match against the hosts and Ardvreck. We played Ardvreck first and lost the toss so batted first. The girls performed strongly, with all of them looking determined to score. Suzanne was unlucky to be caught out on ball 3 but this didn’t dampen spirits. Sophie in particular was very strong and hit rounder after rounder, and the opposition simply could not field her balls back. Consistent and strong scoring from Fiona, Amelia, Ellie, Katie, Iris and Captain Calliope saw the girls dominate the match. Iris played well and it was great to see her score a fantastic rounder from what started as a backwards hit; her determination to get round was great and something which the others need to do. Ardvreck stepped in to bat and our fielding was tight, which made for a comfortable innings. Ellie put out their first player at post 2 on ball 3, and 2 more girls were put out quickly by Amelia at post 1. We kept Ardvreck off the score sheet further, and 2 catches from Suzanne at balls 19 and 21 followed by Amelia putting Elizabeth out at 1, and Sophie catching Abi saw Ardvreck reduced to 2 players. Daisy scored a half but the over was nearly done and we won the match by 11-1.

We played against Craigclowan next and Calliope’s bad luck in choosing the hand with the daisy continued and we lost the toss again! The girls were keen though to bat after such a solid game v Ardvreck. Once again, Sophie’s batting was excellent, and she was our top scorer again in the match with a total of 2 1/2. One of her hits went so far the ball was lost through the fence into a garden!

rightColBody

This match was a bit tighter at the start however whole rounders from Sophie, Amelia, Ellie, Calliope and Iris quickly bumped up our score. We only lost 3 of our players during the game and a steady stream of half rounders in the final few balls from a Fiona, Sophie, Iris and Calliope was enough for us to relax a bit and enjoy the final few balls. Fiona’s bowling was good and we only gave away one half rounder for 2 no balls. Our fielding was even stronger in this game and we managed to get Craigclowan out in 23 balls. Suzanne caught out Annie in the first ball and Ellie then put Susie out swiftly at 2. The triangle of Fiona, Suzanne and Amelia was slick and we put out players at post one on balls 6, 9, 10 and 11. With only 3 girls left in bat, it was difficult for them to score however they plugged on and scored a few half rounders but we managed to get them all out for 4 1/2 Rounders.

A great start to the season from the girls; well done and thanks to our supporters who were lucky enough to sit and watch 2 games in the sun!

Cargilfield 11 Ardvreck 1
Cargilfield 9 1/2 Craigclowan 4 1/2

2nd Team
As Craigclowan were short of girls for our seconds fixture we mixed up the teams and some of our girls joined theirs to make up 2 teams. We had a wonderful afternoon. Although it was rather chilly the rain stayed and all of our girls got plenty of opportunity to bat and field. We have some work to do before our next fixture and in particular need to put pressure on the opposition by pushing on and running to second, especially when there are only a few balls of an innings left.

introTextA super performance to start the season!

After weekly indoor net sessions since the start of September, where a lot of hard work was put in by the boys, the 1stXI were keen to get outside and play some cricket. After just two days back at school, we welcomed Craigclowan to our new setting due to the forthcoming AstroTurf development; despite the very wet and harsh winter, the wicket played very well and having won the toss we chose to bat.

Barring on slow, low wickets is a mile away from the hard fast indoor surface the boys have played on all winter, but I was delighted by the application and shot selection on show by all those who batted. We had four scores over 20 and it was super to see contributions from so many of the team; that is the key to winning matches, with everyone playing their part and not reliant on any one individual. It was promising, with Todd and Rory playing really well at the end of the innings after Marcus and Harry batted patiently earlier on. We also ran well between the wickets picking up lots of cheeky singles and this bodes well for the challenges to come. 176 to 6 after our 25 overs was a fine effort this early in the season and hopefully we will convert some of these 20s in to more next time.

rightColBody

In reply, Craigclowan found life tough against excellent accurate bowling from all ten bowlers. We only have away ten extras which was outstanding in the first game of the season and Todd was excellent behind the stumps, encouraging the bowlers and giving away very few byes. Rory took 4 wickets, we had a Superman catch taken by Marcus at full stretch horizontally and everyone contributed which is important at this early stage. Most teams struggle for their fourth or fifth bowler but we have ten who can all bowl straight and with nine of the opposition batsmen out bowled, the old adage of aiming for the top of off stump rang true.

So a win by 91 runs and the season is up and running. We have a very busy weekend coming up with Merchiston on Saturday and then we are hosting the annual 15/15 festival on Sunday with Sedbergh joining ourselves and Merchiston for what should be a terrific day of cricket.

A word for the spectators who braved the arctic conditions today and we are all hoping for warmer weather to come. We hope! A super start and well played, boys!

2nd XI v Craigclowan – Won by 65 Runs

It was a chilly afternoon and our captain, Tom won the toss and elected to bat. Our top scorer with the bat was Charlie with 17 from 20 balls who was retired (not out) to allow others a chance at the crease. The scoreboard was ticking over due to a few extras from Craigclowan but some of our batsmen played some very nice shots. Otis, Ramsay, Steven and Edo all scored boundaries but Will scored some nice single, running between the wickets well. We managed to reach 140 after our 20 overs which was a terrific score.

After tea, straight delivery from Nico dismissed their opener and Freddie took a great catch despite the glaring sun in his eyes after a good ball from Joshua. Their number 3 batsman came in and made a terrific 29 before running himself out. Joshua, Ramsay, Charlie and Tom all took a wicket to dismiss some more batsman to give us the victory by 65 runs. It was a little disappointing to concede 30 runs from extras but it is early days and more work on our new wicket and in the nets will help to bring this down.

rightColBody

There was no stand out Cargilfield player for our team today; however, with Craigclowan only having 10 players, our own Ned, who was called up to our squad as a 12th man filled in for them and performed brilliantly. He first of all caught Edo out before stepping up and dismissing Will, Maclean and Tom! Ned was therefore the deserved winner of the match ball and overall player of the match!

A bit of a rusty start in places, but a positive result and one we can build on. Well played, boys and a big pat on the back for coping with what were torrid conditions at times

Many congratulations to the Very Rev Dr Russell Barr who celebrates 25 years as Minister at Cramond Kirk this Sunday (22/4/18). He has also been our school Chaplain for over 20 years and we do enjoy his weekly visits on Thursday mornings when he comes to talk to the children. We are very grateful for all of his support of the school, and allowing us to use Cramond Kirk for one of our carol services every year too.

In 2016 he was Moderator of the Church of Scotland, representing the church around the world, and our Chapel Choir were honoured to be asked by him to perform at the General Assembly, a morning the choir will never ever forget! We look forward to seeing Russell on Thursday for his first visit of the term.
