Cargilfield Mathematics ‘Patter’

There can be many different names for the same operation or calculation in Mathematics, and this can lead to confusion or even anxiety. The quick guide below details some of the more common methods used in Mathematics lessons in the Upper School, and the names by which they are known.

1. ‘Hats’ (^) and ‘Hops’

    • The hats method is used to multiply decimals.
    • - A hat sign ^ is placed above each digit after the decimal point (and the number of hats noted in brackets).
    • - The decimal points are removed and the numbers are multiplied.
    • - The answer is written down and correct number of hats placed back on top of the digits, working from the right.
    • - The final answer is written without hats.

    Untitled1

    • The hops method is used to divide by decimals.

    Example: 3.13 ÷ 0.02

The decimal point hops two to the right in both numbers, giving 313 ÷ 2.

    rightColBody
    1. 2. ‘Bus stop’ division

The bus stop method is a simple way to divide; the name refers to the lines drawn in front of and on top of the number to be divided, which form the shape of a bus stop.

    Untitled1

    1. 3. ‘Piggy-back’ division

To divide by larger numbers, the children are encouraged to use factor pairs.

    Example: 10134 ÷ 18

The number 10134 would be divided by a pair of factors (3 and 6) which, multiplied, give the product 18 (2 and 9 could also be used).

    Untitled

    1. 4. Napier Bones

A grid method (named after the 16th century Edinburgh mathematician John Napier) is used for long multiplication.

Complete the multiplication grid square, then add the columns diagonally, beginning at the bottom right, to get the final answer.

The U12 hockey team headed over to Stewart's Melville for their annual P7 tournament along with Fettes, Loretto, George Watson's College, Edinburgh Academy and George Heriot's.  The very warm February sunshine made for a glorious afternoon for those watching, whilst those playing needed lots of water to get them through all their matches.  After the pool games, we played Fettes in the Final and fully deserved to bring home the trophy this year after playing some terrific hockey throughout the day.

Very well done indeed, boys! Champions!

      Cargilfield 14     Fettes 1

The girls enjoyed a good game in the sunshine on the Harper Gow astro. They dominated the game but Fettes gave a good fight and managed to steal the ball a lot due to the girls no looking for who was available for a pass or just because they were taking too long to decide. We swapped positions during the different quarters to give the girls a chance to play on different sides of the pitch. We had some impressive goals from Anna, Valentina and Amenah. Overall, Charlotte who was the team captain deserves the player of the match title.

      Well done, girls.

      U11A Netball vs. St Mary’s

U11A’s have an unbeaten record, except one team St. Mary’s! So this week the girls were determined in their rematch not to be beaten. We came out and played an incredible first half, Clara (player of the match) was particularly strong at intercepting balls and Katinka managed to get into great space. All the girls marked their players tightly and managed to constantly intercept their play. In particular Issy who had a strong goal shoot to mark. Clemmie got around her marker and scored consistently. The first half score was 6-2. But St. Mary’s responded well in the second half and started to equalise. With strong team work we managed to draw 10 all.

      U11A Netball vs. Loretto

Playing back to back matches the girls were fatigued in the first half of the match. Although Josephine and Vanetia helped move the ball up the court the sun was in the eyes of our shooters and the first half score was 3-2. However after a half time break the team picked up their movement and managed to get the ball down court to Poppy (captain, player of the match) who shot some fantastic shots from near to the edge of the D to secure us a win of 11-5. Excellent play this week ready for our U11 netball tour.

This was our second fixture against Fettes, playing outside this time, and it was interesting to see how much all the girls from both schools had improved.

      Cargilfield A 15 Fettes 2.

The A team played first and I was delighted with the quick passing from Lucy, Maddie and Esme delivering the ball into the circle for Esme and Izzy to shoot on goal. Our positioning and awareness in the shooting circle was much improved since the January game and we quickly scored three gaols. I was pleased at how creative the girls were using Maddie at centre and Lucy at Wing attack to get the ball into improved shooting positions. This was very important as the Fettes GD was very tall and her hands were able to block many shots. So we had to pass and shoot quickly. Amalia and Tessa also worked well as GD and GK and Fettes were only able to score one goal. I advised the girls to try to take the ball wide in the next quarter, rather than playing up the middle. We tried to do this and Maddie was particularly mobile and got the ball moving quickly. We had an excellent second quarter scoring five further goals. Whilst Fettes were defending and passing well, we just kept on pushing with clear determination. The final quarters were a little quieter. Bea came on as WD and Savannah came back on in the final quarter, this time substituting for Lucy and she was able to continue Lucy’s excellent work, intercepting well and making good passing decisions. It was a superb team effort and a well-deserved win. We finished with four goals in the last quarter, the very last goal being set up as a clever bounce pass to Esme to avoid the tall GD. Good thinking, Izzy. The whole game showed just how well the girls’ strategic play is developing. Well done!

      Final score Cargilfield A 15 Fettes 2.

The B Team also had a successful game beating Fettes 7-1. Well done, Cargilfield! Report to follow.

      Fettes: Won 4-1

      Belhaven: Won 6-0

On a gorgeous February afternoon, the boys travelled to Fettes to take on both Fettes and Belhaven in a round-robin. Overall, I was very pleased with how the boys handled themselves in the two matches. On the attacking front, they attacked quickly as a unit and generally passed well between each other. They played quickly and dominated possession. Their finishing is improving each match they play. An area to improve on for next week, which we will also work on in training, is using the space, passing wide and driving up the wings before crossing the ball. In defence, we are solid in the tackle and much improved at clearing the ball away from the D. An area that we need to improve on is our marking off the opposition; against stronger opposition we would have let in quite a few more goals. This defensive marking starts with the attack and midfield from 16’s and then finishes with the defenders man-marking an attacking opposition. If we can consistently do this in each match, we will be a very strong hockey side.

      Well done, boys!

The sun was actually blazing down as we took to the court for our first match against Loretto. Issy took control directing play from the Centre and our shooters. Laura and Clemmie worked well together and Saphira was on hand to take a pass back and feed it back in. Ob the wings Flora and Alannahs court coverage was amazing and they were well supported by our defence. We dominated this game from the start and ended with an impressive result.

Final score Cargilfield 10, Loretto 2

We were aware from our last fixture that St Mary's were possibly a more formidable opposition and although we were tired having just played against Loretto we hit st marys hard. The girls were supeeb and this was probably the best netball I have seen them play all term. By the end of the first half we were 7-1 ahead. However, in the second half we bagan to tire. St Mary's were relentless in their attack and despite the best efforts of Calia, Rosanna and Flora the steadily equalled the score.

      1st Netball v St Mary’s and Loretto

The 1st girls had a fun afternoon playing a triangular match against St Mary’s and Loretto. Our first match was against Loretto who opened the scoring first. We soon fought back and Amy and Amelia’s shooting in particular, was impressive to watch. With the score at 9-4 at half time, the girls started to pull away as the minutes progressed and we were just that bit too strong for the Loretto girls.

      Cargilfield 21 Loretto 4

We played St Mary’s next who we had lost to earlier in the season. This game was always going to be a close one and the girls were really up for a good match. They certainly did not disappoint. The game flowed from end to end with both teams scoring on their centre pass. St Mary’s nudged ahead at half time leading 6-5. Our girls were chomping at the bit to win the match and no one could put a foot wrong in the second half. Flora and Emma worked particularly hard in defence and intercepted some really tricky balls. Again, Amelia and Amy scored every time they shot and Katie, Ellie and Sophie linked well, finding space and getting the ball through to the shooters. Catherine came on at half time and it was great to see her stand her ground against some very strong St Mary’s girls. We pulled ahead and by the end, had a comfortable lead which meant the girls could enjoy playing some really high quality netball.

After ten years’ absence, we re-invented the Cargilfield Challenge for our “All In” weekend this term, whereby the children were in teams who faced a series of challenges that earned points for their team. In essence, a simple idea but in reality, a lot of organising so a very big thank you to all the wonderful staff who made the activities such fun, cooked the delicious meals, tucked the children up at night and generally looked after the children that made for such a happy weekend. We were blessed with the most amazingly warm and bright, sunny weather, which helped everyone enjoy the weekend. Who could have thought that we could spend the morning on the beach on Saturday in t-shirts? Dalmeny Beach is such a magical spot and the children faced two challenges: “design a sculpture” and “build a bonfire”.

In the afternoon on Saturday, we had 7 activities running and the children rotated around each one. There was: climbing, hockey dribble and shoot, obstacle course, throwing, mountain biking, basketball hoop as well as T-shirt and flag design. To wrap-up a busy and action-packed day, there was a fun quiz in the evening.

On Sunday morning there was a race up Arthur’s Seat in glorious sunshine and the views were spectacular. We were all impressed with the children’s fitness and energy, who went charging up ahead of the group leaders, urging the adults to keep up!

After another delicious meal, the children had three design-focused challenges remaining on Sunday afternoon: “Balloon-powered Car”, “Spaghetti Bridges” and “Marble Runs”.

Sometimes, the first time you do a new activity like this is always the best and we all certainly really enjoyed this weekend. The children were magnificent; always encouraging their team-mates and each other, always keen to do their best and to try their hardest for their team. Throughout the weekend they were polite, helpful and fun. Well done to all the children and a big thank you to all the staff involved.

What a lovely morning we all had down on Dalmeny beach today! The children worked together to create some imaginative sand sculptures before then attempting to light a few with limited equipment. Definitely a few Bear Grylls out there!! Great fun had by all!

What a wonderful afternoon of rugby over at Stewart's Melville this afternoon! We took 16 boys over, played two mixed teams and enjoyed some terrific free flowing running rugby on a lovely mild February afternoon! Lots of tries were scored, and the off loading, support play and tackling from all the boys was superb - the Master in charge of rugby at their senior school was refereeing and was hugely complementary about the style of rugby the boys looked to play and I had to agree with him!

Three out of four matches were won, but more importantly, the teamwork, the commitment and skills on show were hugely encouraging and bode well for when these boys move up to the Under 11s in September.

A joy to watch, so well done, boys!

The children in P1 had a fantastic Science and Computing workshop this afternoon. As part of our topic on toys, the children learnt all about robots and programming using lego! After learning what robots can be used for, they learnt the first two rules of programming. They found out that robots do exactly what they are told and that it is very important for instructions to be in order. They were then given their mission; to program robots for the World Cup Football team. They worked together to build lego robot goalkeepers and then used blocks to program their goalkeeper to move. They then tested their robot by seeing if they could score goals against it. Such a fun afternoon for all!

I always brace myself for the response to when I ask the question, “what do you know about Islam?” for I never quite know what I might get.  As predicted, the word ISIS is mentioned and I know at that point, that whatever I planned that lesson, will go right out the window.  For this is what I love about teaching Religious Studies.  Not only is it a chance to impart knowledge of the world’s major religions (brag over), but more importantly it is an opportunity to right the misconceptions that are forever being raised by platformssuch as social media and the press, in order to create a “good story”.

In a world that is ever changing, one can’t open a newspaper without some reference to religion and as such, tolerance has never been more important.  And whilst history is full of blood and violence where religion is concerned, whether it is the Babylonian wars in Old Testament times (studied in Forms 5 and 6), the Crusades, the martyrdom of Sikhism, the conflict during India’s independence and the Holocaust, each religion has its part to play in the history of religious conflict.  After all, as the saying goes, one man’s terrorist, is another man’s freedom fighter.  There is no doubt that interpretation has a lot to answer to, as does the culture versus religion debate; these latter two are not synonymous and will forever be an ongoing battle to separate.

And that is why the teaching of religion is now, more than ever, such a vital part of the overall education of the young generation coming though.  Whatever the reasoning behind these events, our children need to understand that at the heart of all faith are the core values – treating others well and living a life in the way that fulfils this.  The very slim minority that don’t do this should not taint the vast majority of those that do, and this is what I hope the children of Cargilfield understand.

      P2 goes into space!

Not every day you come into school to find your classroom cordoned off with ‘spacesuit required’ warning signs! This is what greeted P2 this morning as they came in and discovered, to their delight, that an entire space ship had appeared in their classroom overnight! Complete with lounging area, kitchen, laboratory and viewing platform the P2s spent the morning being put through their paces, trying various tasks that astronauts would experience on a journey through space.

This started with a tricky challenge of using our ‘space gloves’. Not the easiest of equipment we realised as we tried to construct our best model rocket out of wooden bricks without knocking it back down! Next, we gazed out our viewing platform pensively at some star constellations and created the pretty patterns we saw with chalks. Then we took on the fiddly task of creating a chain to attach ourselves to for a spacewalk. We stuck at this with determination and created some impressively long chains! We even got to try some dehydrated astronaut food! There were very mixed opinions as we nibbled some breakfast ‘rice’, rather dry ‘bread’ for lunch and dehydrated ‘beef’ for dinner. Some of us realised we really couldn’t be fussy eaters if we were to be astronauts one day!

Whilst there was much fun to be had we came to the conclusion that life must be quite a challenge being an astronaut! That being said, I think we’ve encouraged an entire year group of budding astronauts in one morning! Beam us up Scotty!

It was a well fought match this week with a tough team from Loretto who weren’t afraid to go for the ball. In the first half we moved well around the court with Katinka, Josephine and Clara making sure the ball was quickly passed up the court. Clemmie was fantastic at getting into space around the D and both her and Amenah scored some good goals leaving us at 7-3 in the first half. In the second half Loretto put us under more pressure but Vanetia (player of the match) and Issy did especially well to defend against their shooters. Valentina joined as centre and passed effectively to Poppy who did well to get into space. We maintained a lead with great determination from all the girls. The final score was a 12-8 win to us.

The Under Nine girls had a further opportunity to play Loretto so this time we brought 13 girls, the rest of the U9 squad. Esme was the only girl to play again as she kindly took the place of Savannah who is ill. She played very well indeed and was judged man of the match, scoring six goals and creating lots of opportunities in her role as GA. Amalia also played very well moving energetically to defend the D and having to play without a GK. She proved to be very effective as Loretto only scored one goal. Nadia struggled to get the ball past tall defenders but she tried hard. Bea got the ball moving well down to the shooters and Hattie and Bonnie put in some good passes. Final score Cargilfield Spots 6 Loretto 1

The second match was a much closer affair and resulted in a draw. Lucy and Tunrayo worked well as a shooting partnership and Lyla was very mobile around the pitch. Two lovely goals form Lucy! Some of our passes went awry and some players need to work harder on their concentration and on watching the ball. We could have won the game had we all played our best. However we enjoyed the game and settled for the final score of Cargilfield Stripes 2 Loretto 2

Having had Sedbergh visit us before half term, it was nice to welcome Loretto to Cargilfield for our first home hockey match against Scottish opposition!

We played some great hockey with Cody pulling the strings in midfield and scoring a few goals. Harry scored a nice deflection from a well-worked penalty corner. We were quite quiet in the first period and I asked for the boys to be a bit more vocal in terms of encouragement not just after doing things well but also if we made mistakes. We let frustration get the better of ourselves and we always play much better with our chins up. This improved in the middle period and we linked up better on the right with Glen making some good runs to the base line and looking up to get a cross or pull back in. Charles had a nice finish at the back post before Ollie came on up front and scored with an excellent squeezed shot at goal.

Albie didn’t have much to do but commanded his goal well and did lots of talking at the back. Rory was solid as usual in defence and Harry looked to link up with him to transition the ball. Murray showed some good skill at left back and James played well on the right and made some good runs after replacing Glen on the right wing. Luca capped a fine performance off by following up a move and finishing at the back post. Cody was given man of the match for his skill in midfield but also for looking to bring the wider players into the game and put the ball into space.

We still have to work on some basics such as moving into space and giving a lead to our team mates and passing with a little more zip and accuracy but we have lots of time and we will get there before we head south in the middle of March.

      Blues: Won 5-1

The Blues started well and found themselves in control of the match quite quickly. We played well as an attacking unit and had many opportunities on goal. Unfortunately, a lot of these opportunities were squandered by a lack of communication in the attacking unit. This is an area that I will be working on with them in training next week. However, we did convert quite a few chances into goal. I was also pleased with the defence. They did the job of breaking up attacks and clearing the ball well. A little more confidence needs to be had when taking a hit out. We shall work on marking the opposition next week as an area to improve on.

      Stripes: Won 7-0

The Stripes also started on the front foot and dominated possession in the match. I was pleased with the attack playing the ball into the wide areas and then crossing the ball neatly into the D. The communication between the players was good and allowed them to zip the ball around the pitch and create a lot of opportunities. The defence held a solid line and broke up each attack that came their way. We shall also work on marking the opposition, which will improve their overall game.

      Well done, boys!

The 3rd boys hockey team travelled away to play Loretto – the third match this term against this opposition for a number of the boys. Having won both of our previous encounters, the boys hoped to keep the streak going.

The boys maintained possession of the ball at the start of play and this enabled a series of attacks in the opposition D but it took a full five minutes of attack until their patience paid off and the first goal was scored. The remainder of the half continued in the same vein and the boys were able to add three more goals to their tally.

In the second half, Loretto came back strong, determined to make a match of it, but the boys held steady for 15 minutes scoring again to take them 5 goals up. Energy began to wane though and Loretto seized their opportunity to respond with two well worked goals.

      The match ended 5-2.

Although all of the boys played well, man of the match, Oliver, deserves a special mention for his untiring work rate and competent finishing in front of goal.

The girls were on top form today and absolutely everyone gave 100% throughout the match. I was incredibly impressed with their hard work and positivity. Their team work shone through and they were supportive of each other and worked brilliantly together. We started off strongly in what was a face paced first quarter and ended with a goal from Laura taking us ahead. In the 2nd quarter we capitalised on this. Calia and Rosanna were brilliant in defence and Izzy, Bethany , Flora and Saphira worked incredibly hard to feed the ball up to our shooters. Clemmie came into her own in the second half and scored some brilliant goals from the back of the D. Flora impressed me with her dynamism around the court making some brilliant interceptions. Alannah had a shot a Centre, something she had not tried before but which will definitely add another string to her bow.

Very well done girls. A fantastic performance and your best yet.

The 1st girls had a bit of an uneven match this week against Ardvreck. We started strongly and soon found ourselves comfortably in the lead. Amelia and Amy consistently found the net and the Ardvreck team struggled to keep up. We intercepted well and with the score at 18-4 at half time, it was clear we were needing to move the positions round to keep the game worthwhile. Ellie and Katie stepped in to shoot and sadly for Ardvreck, Ellie kept scoring! Amy was moved back to GK and like Ellie, was too efficient in her new position too! Catherine and Flora stepped in to shoot in the last quarter and there were cheers when Flora scored the one and only goal of the quarter! Sophie played with great spirit and a good sense of humour as GK against the tallest Ardvreck player who was literally double her size, and it brought a smile to everyone as she tried valiantly to mark someone so tall.

Well done to all – a fun match this week for both sides.

What an eventful Roman Day for P3! After dressing up in some fantastic costumes of roman emperors and gladiators, P3 had a very special visit from The Antonine Guard. He showed us what it would take to become a roman soldier. He taught us how to march with shouts of ‘sin’ (left in Latin) and ‘dex’ (right) and how to protect against enemy sword using roman shields. Watch out world, you may soon see P3 charging in turtle formation to invade the wilds of Scotland!

It was a real pleasure to welcome Lars Fox, Senior Deputy Head at Queen Margaret's School, to preach in Chapel this morning.

He spoke about the importance of real friendships and of having people you can rely on and who help you when you need someone, and how we can all be good friends to other people. Real friends are dependable and are there to help us in times of need. In a community, we all need to look out for other people and to be a friend to others.

Thank you for coming up to see us!

P1 had such a fantastic time visiting The Yard today. There were so many exciting areas to play in and the play workers were super too. After our visit we had a discussion about the fantastic work it does and how it helps so many different people. We are busy thinking of ideas of how we could help the The Yard. More news about those exciting plans to follow shortly ...

We were also delighted to receive recognition of the £2000 which we donated to them last year!

The Under Nine girls were excited to be playing their first triangular against Loretto and Belhaven, away at Loretto.

      Cargilfield 8 Belhaven 1

We had been watching Belhaven beat Loretto and had already established that they were the better team. Belhaven beat Loretto 4:2, so we had a plan in place to mark carefully and to spread out our players and our passes. Esme, Izzy and Maddie made a formidable attacking team with very many balls being fed into our shooters. We were much better at getting closer to the post to shoot and before long Izzy scored and Esme scored four in a row. Belhaven answered with one of their own but we were ahead going into the second half. We swopped Athena into the GK position as Rowan had injured her knees in a fall. She and Tessa had been working hard to defend and Athena did likewise. The second half saw Belhaven increase their efforts and we had a tighter game. Izzy did manage to score another three however! Final score Cargilfield 8 Belhaven 1

      rightColBody

      Cargilfield 8 Loretto 1

Our second match started straight away with Cargilfield again looking the stronger team. We were not as focused however and some of our play was a bit ragged. We can pass more accurately and we must remember to pass to the girl in the best position rather than to our friend! In the first half Esme and Izzy were again shooting well and we were 4 ahead at the end of the first half. In the second half we moved around, putting Maddie in as goal shooter and swopping Rowan and Athena again. Athena intercepted well and Rowan delivered some good passes. Esme kept up the scoring pressure with three more goals and Maddie also scored. Final score Cargilfield 8 Loretto 1, the same score as the first match.

Some aspects to work on girls as discussed but some very good play especially from Esme, Maddie and Izzy. Well done, Girls!

The Cargilfield team played a strong match, controlling the game throughout with strong, accurate passing and alert defending. The midfielders distributed the ball out to the wings, who took it to the base line before crossing it to the penalty spot where their attacking team mates were able to confidently take a shot on goal. Kyan, Matthew and James made competent wingers, executing their roles effectively.   The defenders and midfield ensured attacks were terminated quickly by energetically marking the opposition and making well-timed tackles. This set up a strong base from which to counterattack, providing the forwards with plenty of opportunities to score, which they did successfully.

Well done to all the boys for maintaining their effort throughout the match.

As we were unfortunately missing one player, Anna volunteered to join the Cs as their GA. She was nominated Captain as well to thank her for her gesture.

The girls played a fast paced game and remembered to use the space better than in the past. They dominated the game and kept a very fairplay attitude during the whole game. Mariella and Lottie were good at making sure the ball was on the move. Annika, Cara and Annabella were efficient at intercepting the ball and marking their opponents. Anna and Amenah did and excellent job in the circle scoring a total of 12 and 6 goals respectively.

Well done, girls; a very good game indeed!

We enjoyed two incredibly competitive and well played games against our 2 strongest opponents this season. Our first match against Fettes was neck and neck from the start Clemmie and Laura shot really well with Saphira, Flora, Bethany and Izzy playing fast and furiously on the wing. Our defence took a little time to warm up but again played incredibly well. We lost pace in the third quarter but then pulled it back again in the final one.

In our second match against St Mary’s we edged ahead. Our defence was much tighter and Calia and Rosanna worked very well as a team. Rosanna made some fantastic interceptions in the D to stop the St Mary’s shooters from scoring. We picked up pace towards the end as the St Mary’s girls tired having played 2 fixtures on the trot. However, luck was not on our side. In the dying seconds St Mary’s pulled ahead.

      Final scores Cargilfield 6, Fettes 10 and Cargilfield 4, St Mary’s 5

U11As were feeling positive after such a good game last week! We had an excellent start with some fantastic shooting from Clemmie (player of the match) and were 4-0 up in the first quarter. Craigclowan came back strong but were held off with great defence from Katinka and Clara. By half time Craigclowan were passing more efficiently and started scoring with a score of 5-2 to us. The second half was a closer match and the girls needed to get into space and pass as well as they had done previously. The score was 7-9 with only a few minutes to go but Izzy held off the GS and Josephine and Venetia (team captain) moved the ball well up the court to Poppy who scored! Good determination from the team. Final score 10-7 to Cargilfield.

      Cargilfield In double hockey success!

The day after the new astroturf facilities were officially opened, we had fantastic double hockey success at the IAPS regional hockey qualifiers held at Fettes_College.

Both the U13 and U11 boys came through some strong competition winning their qualification tournament, and so have qualified for the National Prep Schools’ Hockey Finals to be held at Millfield Senior School (U13) and Rugby School (U11) in March.

A wonderful achievement by both teams and we look forward to representing Scotland down in the Finals later this term!

It was a long afternoon with plenty of hockey.  We began well with win against Sedbergh. In the first half, we deflected a penalty corner into our own goal to make it 2-1 but we began the second half much sharper than we finished the first and managed to improve on our goal difference which was important in the end.

In the second match, we played the hosts, Fettes and managed to get a quick goal but Fettes came back into it and Albie had to make a terrific save to keep his clean sheet.  We eventually got the second which took a little pressure off our otherwise resolute defence in Rory, Luca and Harry.

Belhaven were up next and we knew, having watched them and seen their results, this was going to be tough.  We had a chance to go one up: James, who had been outstanding in the opening two games, broke down the right but the final pass wasn’t quite accurate and Cody wasn’t able to put it away.  Belhaven finished the half stronger but Rory was superb at the back to thwart any threat and in the second half, we were fairly dominant but couldn’t find a way past their strong defence and excellent goalkeeper.  The final whistle went on our ‘duel in the sun’ and it suddenly made the afternoon very interesting indeed.

When we faced Ardvreck in the fourth match, we started really positively with some terrific quick passing, especially between Cody and Glen and went 2 nil up within a minute.  We knew that the tournament could possibly come down to goal difference if Belhaven and us kept winning our games and we let this get to us a bit. Unfortunately, complacency set in and we tried to do too much individually and look to score the ‘miracle goal’.  As we missed opportunities, our heads dropped and it was time for a reshuffle.  On came Murray, Charles and Ollie who made a huge difference.  Charles scored 3 goals – one of which was a cool lift over the goal keeper and another a terrific deflection high into the net.  Murray put in a great touch at the back post after a Cody shot from a short corner and also had a lovely reverse shot.

Following the break, there was a bit of a team selection dilemma – do we start with the team we started each game with or do we reward the team who finished the previous game strongly.  It was the latter and those boys played some terrific hockey.  Charles linked up well with Cody and scored to settle the nerves.  Murray was terrific down the left and Ollie was bossing the midfield.  Glen took up a position on the right and was allowed to run at the defence and put some terrific balls in.  At half time, we brought all the subs on and they continued to help the team to score some more goals.

With Belhaven winning the remainder of their games but not catching up on our goal difference, we knew we just had to beat Craigclowan to win the tournament.  And it seemed we saved our best hockey for last. We went with a different line up but one that was attacking as getting the early goal was crucial. Charles got this after a little lift past the keeper and then as a team we wound down the clock by clearing lines, not forcing the pass but playing it around confidentially at the back.  We got a couple more goals and then brought on fresh legs.  Murray was electric on the left; Harry was solid at the back and the two combined to help set up the goal of the day.  Murray, with nowhere to go on the left, turned and knocked it back to Harry in his own half.  The ball was transitioned across the pitch through Ollie to Glen who went down the right wing and played a terrific ball to Luca who finished in style.  A great team goal!

When the final whistle went there was relief and celebrations all round with the boys knowing they had booked a ticket to the IAPS Finals at Rugby School in March.

Well done to all the teams but especially Belhaven who pushed us to the end and forced us to raise our game.  It is a shame that this year just the one team go south as Belhaven would make a good account of themselves as they played some nice hockey.

However, we were deserved winners with the number of goals we scored and the way that we managed to unlock what were solid defences at times.  Many thanks to Fettes for hosting the tournament and making sure everything ran on time.   We now have some serious work to do to prepare for the finals which the level of play is always at a higher level but for now boys, enjoy a well-earned rest!

Nick and Lucas' mums came to nursery today to share their experiences of Chinese New Year. The children had a wonderful time learning all about the animals of the zodiac and the story of 'The Great Race'. The children then made their own badges and learnt how to sing Chinese New Year songs. Lucas' cousin Oliver and his grandmother had also come to visit nursery having come all the way from China to celebrate Chinese New Year with Lucas and his family. A huge 'thank you' to Mrs Huang and Mrs Yan for organising a wonderful afternoon of celebrations in the nursery!

On Tuesday 5th February we were delighted that our new Gillespie astroturf was officially opened by Tom Heap, BBC Rural Affairs reporter and a presenter on BBC Countryfile.  Despite the rain, it was a wonderful occasion with the whole of the Upper School and a number of pre prep children out to watch as well as the players from Sedbergh School who were here to play hockey in the afternoon.

The astroturf is named after a former Head Boy of Cargilfield, 2nd Lt Alexander Douglas Gillespie, who died in 1915 at the Battle of Loos. Tom is the great nephew of AD Gillespie and is one of the trustees of The Western Front Way, a charity formed to build a path across the Western Front to honour those who died in World War 1.

Three months before he died, Alexander wrote to his old Headmaster at Winchester College (where he moved to after leaving Cargilfield) about the pathway that he envisioned as a remembrance for the war after it finished. He wrote that he dreamed of a “long avenue between the lines from the Vosges to the sea... I would make a fine broad road in the 'No Mans Land' between the lines, with paths for pilgrims on foot and plant trees for shade.” He wrote that he wanted it to be “the most beautiful road in all the world”.

His brother, Thomas, also an old boy of Cargilfield, died in WW1 as well, joining up after winning a silver medal in the Rowing Eight at the Stockholm Olympics of 1912.

On Friday afternoon the nursery went along to the pre-prep hall to play all sorts of wonderful winter themed parachute games. We had a fantastic time!

Form 4 performed their poems on Monday 4th January. All the children recited Scottish poems in their kilts to link to their Scottish History topic they are studying this term. 4W sang ‘You cannae shove your granny off the bus’ and 4P sang ‘Donald, where’s your troosers’! In between the poems there were some very talented musicians, including playing Highland Cathedral on the chanter. The recital finished with a very strong performance of Address to a Haggis.

It was a real pleasure to welcome Mr Peter Liston to Cargilfield this morning to preach in Chapel. Peter is Housemaster of Bramston at Oundle School, a popular destination for many of our boys and girls at 13+.

Following a reading from ‘Touching the Void’ by Joe Simpson, Peter spoke about making decisions, about never giving up and the importance of always having hope.

It was brilliant to have Form 4 in school boarding for the weekend and the highlight was going to Murrayfield to watch Scotland’s opening game of the 2019 Six Nations against Italy. For some, it was their first rugby match and it did not disappoint with lots of tries being scored, a great atmosphere and, of course, a Scotland win!

Heavy and Light - The children in nursery have been very interested in investigating how heavy and light different objects are in nursery. We have been finding different objects which we think are heavy or light and we even tested what we thought by putting the items on the balancing scales to see which items were heavier and which items were lighter.

Heavy and Light - The children in nursery have been very interested in investigating how heavy and light different objects are in nursery. We have been finding different objects which we think are heavy or light and we even tested what we thought by putting the items on the balancing scales to see which items were heavier and which items were lighter.

Floating and Sinking - After experimenting with heavy and light objects, the children were very intrigued to find out whether the heavy items they found would sink or float. So we did some experiments to find out!

The Music Department enjoyed a visit from Mr Richard Tanner, Director of Music at Rugby School on 30th and 31st January. Mr Tanner took the choir for two rehearsals and really made us think about the question ‘Which is more important; words or music?’ There were lots of answers and some of the activities he did with us over the course of the two days made choir members rethink their opinion and the reasons for it. His warm-up exercise with ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’ really made us think about what we were singing – a real brain game!

Mr Tanner also took a series of stimulating Performance Workshops with groups of musicians from F6, F7 and F8, giving lots of useful feedback about practising and performance and involving everyone in discussing what works well in each person’s playing. The F8 group particularly enjoyed Fergus’s exploration with Mr Tanner of different styles of playing in a Baroque sonata by Vivaldi; well done for being such an adaptable performer!

A terrific day and many thanks to Mr Tanner for coming up to see us!
