Shriyaa finds Cargilfield old boy in Delhi

Continuing our Headmaster Rob Taylor's mission to honour the lives of Cargilfield's 126 old boys and masters who lost their lives during WWI, the Varadpande family, including Form 8 pupil Shriyaa, took up Rob’s Western Front Way challenge during the Christmas holidays. The family paid a visit to the graves and memorials of those commemorated on the India Gate in New Delhi before Christmas, and discovered the name of Frederick Salvesen on it.Frederick was the younger brother of Edward, both of whom hailed from Dean Park House. He served as a Captain in the 82nd Punjabis and was believed to be a career soldier. Frederick and Edward were cousins of Eric Salvesen and all three appear on our War Memorial in Chapel. This past summer, the Salvesen family generously sponsored wreaths for Edward and Eric, both of whom appear on the memorials at The Menin Gate, Ypres, and Vis-en-Artois.Frederick Salvesen passed away on 21st December 1919, at the age of 23 and was laid to rest at Jandola Cemetery in Pakistan (grave number 15).Shriyaa is one of our enthusiastic Form 8 readers who enjoys the Cargilfield Library named after the Salvesen family.
