P3 joined the upper school today to meet their new form teacher and also to meet lots of other teachers who they will meet in September. They spent some time in the DT room making their own wooden robot and learning new skills like designing, sanding, gluing and drilling.

What a super senior concert we enjoyed this afternoon! We heard some marvellous ensembles and individuals all based around an American theme, and the Chapel Choir gave a beautiful rendition of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen to bring proceedings to an end. Well done to all those who took part, to the parents who came to watch and to all the peripatetic music staff who prepared the children so well!

introTextA great game to finish the season in style!
image/cms/resources/img6509.jpg
imageAltCricket
leftColBody

It has been a strange season in many ways! Firstly, we have had almost unbroken sunshine for the whole of the term which has made for hard and fast outfields, and pitches with a good carry and bounce – most unusual in Scotland, it must be said; secondly, as a batting unit, we have scored over 150 on numerous occasions which is rare in 25 over cricket; and thirdly, our bowling attack, which promised so much throughout the winter nets, did not quite function and too many loose balls relieved the pressure on the batsmen and runs came too easily considering the potential quality of our attack. All that said, it has, once again, been a hugely enjoyable summer of cricket, with a keen and hard working group of boys who have worked well together as a team, with no stand out individuals, but everyone working hard together. Good to see.

It is always nice to end the season in style, and what a game we had this afternoon played in very hot sunshine and very kindly hosted by Glenalmond College. It was a real treat to play on their 1stXI square and on a hard true surface, we would have hoped to have scored plenty of runs after winning the toss and choosing to bat. However, this did not materialise! Firstly, we were without the captain, Harry, who was playing for the Eastern Knights U14 representative side, and secondly, Ardvreck possessed a very useful bowling attack, led by a very tall and fast opening bowler who had destroyed a number of teams this season. We lost wickets at regular intervals, although kept the scoreboard ticking along through some excellent running between the wickets: Charlie and Findlay batted well before playing poor shots, and all we needed was the lower order to hang around with Todd, who batted superbly given the conditions. Unfortunately, despite being given lots of advice by Todd, the lower middle order threw their wickets away, and we limped to 71 all out in only the 16th over. Not a great batting performance if truth be told, and we have shown on numerous occasions this year that we are better than that. Picking up singles, rotating the strike and occupying the crease means runs will be scored, and in a low scoring match, every run is crucial.

rightColBody

In reply, we took a wicket second ball, as their opener edged an excellent ball from VJ and Todd did the rest behind the stumps. Interesting, but that brought their giant opening bowler in to bat who proceeded to crack his first ball to the boundary. Oh dear, the omens did not look good. Then the moment that changed the game. Marcus in to bowl, the other opener hit the ball hard but in the air straight at cover; VJ dropped the catch and the batsmen went for the run; VJ picked up and threw the ball to Todd who whipped off the bails and their captain, giant and star cricketer was run out. 7 for 2 and game on! Defending a low score, it is so important that the fielding is top drawer and today it was; everyone supported the bowlers and Ardvreck found run scoring very difficult indeed. Findlay, bowling his leg spin, bamboozled the batsmen, and when Marcus took a great catch close in at cover, it left them 46 for 6. 25 to win, and 4 wickets for us to get. The score crept up, balls fell agonisingly short of the fielders who were in close looking for the catch, and then William came on and bowled a superb 5 over spell of accurate left arm over seam bowlingl, taking two wickets and only conceding a handful of runs; it was a match winning performance if ever there was one! It was left to Rory to take the final wicket, with just five runs required by Ardvreck, and cue the celebrations! A richly deserved win, and one that showed the value of teamwork, determination and the effect of good, accurate bowling on nervous batsmen trying to reach a low target.

Huge congratulations to the whole team on what was an excellent fielding and bowling effort today. To win the final game of the season, without the skipper, says a lot about this group of boys. They have worked so hard all year with their rugby, hockey and cricket, and although results have not always gone their way, they have kept going and this ‘never say die’ attitude paid dividends today. Well played everyone!

Win 26-9
I
t was a beautiful day at home for our last match of the season. The girls got lots of sun cream on and they were very excited for their last game. Their contact with the ball was outstanding and everyone scored at least one full rounder! Some quick and accurate decisions were made which stopped Ardvreck scoring many rounders and also stumped a few girls out quickly. I was really impressed by the girl’s great team spirit and outstanding sportsmanship. They did well to play against older girls and took it in their stride. You have had a great season girls. You are such a great team and I have really enjoyed coaching you.

Lost 3 to 8.5

The girls played under a glorious sun in Musselburgh today. They won their first inning 3 to 2.5 by managing to get many of their opponent out. Unfortunately they did not score anything in their second inning and list it 0-6. They must remember to look up when running as many of them got out by running to the next base without checking where the ball was. Lola balled well and the girls must remember to send to the baller to stop the ball. Amelia ran well from backstop to 2nd base but again sometimes just a pass would have worked. The girls played well and cheered on each other. Good example of sportsmanship!

introTextA very hot afternoon in Melrose!

imageAltRounders
leftColBody

This was an absolute scorcher of a day to be playing our final fixtures. When we reached Melrose it was 32 degrees and it is fair to say that the red heads amongst us were definitely wilting. However in our first match against Loretto we put up a good fight. Our batting was tremendous and much more consistent than it has been for most of the season. Issy was our top scorer with 3 1/2 and Amy, Flora and Sophia all playing well. Flora took a brilliant catch off the first ball to put out a powerful Loretto batter but I think after that the heat was a little bit much for us. Our fielding was not too great around second which allowed the opposition to pick up lots of half rounders.

Cargilfield 6, Loretto 9

rightColBody

St Mary’s had some really good batters who again managed to exploit our weakness around 2nd base despite some amazing fielding from Issy in the Deep and Flora on first. They ended their batting with an impressive 13 rounders. We pulled it back a bit and again our batting was very good. Issy was excellent again as was Martha, Amy S and Clemmie.

Well done to the 1st Girls who finished off their season in style today against Ardvreck. Ardvreck batted first and steadily scored half rounder after half rounder. Amelia dismissed their first player at post 1 on ball 4 followed not long after by Sophie who caught out Hortence on ball 13. Sophie had a busy fielding innings with many of the balls coming her way and she pitched them well back in to the posts. We had a bit of a sleepy spell from balls 20-28, and we misfielded or simply just missed some balls that were coming our way. Let’s put it down to too much sun!!
We stepped in to bat and looked comfortable from the start. We lost Esme early on however we stuck at it and the rounders came in. Sophie and Suzanne were our top scorers in this innings with 3 ½ and 2, and scoring from Amelia, Ellie, Fiona, Rosie and Calliope saw us score a total of 9 ½ .

rightColBody

We had a very strong fielding innings after half time, and Ardvreck found it extremely hard to score. Amelia and Ellie came out in to the deep field and worked particularly well together. This let Rosie and Iris play on posts 2 and 1 which also worked well. Sophie’s catching hands were on today and she caught out 2 players on balls 8 and 10. Iris then put out a player at post 1 followed quickly by Sophie making another catch on ball 16. Katie fielded well off posts one and 2 and pitched in some lovely balls back to Fiona. Rosie put out another player on ball 24 at post 2 and we kept Ardvreck down to a total of 1.
Having won the match already, the girls stepped in to bat and understandably looked more relaxed. There was consistent scoring from all the girls with rounders from Suzanne, Sophie, Fiona, Iris and Katie as well as a few halves from Amelia and Rosie. Rosie made a brave dash round only to be put out at 4 for not touching the post however she still scored her half from her no balls. The innings finished at 13 ½ to us and 1 to Ardvreck.

Final Score: Cargilfield 23 ½ Ardvreck 8

On Friday we had the first Cargilfield Book Festival, a day focused around books and reading for the whole school. Everyone dressed up as a character from a favourite book and we had a whole host of visiting authors, book illustrators and poets who gave lots of interesting workshops to different age groups; we had the Form 8 children reading to the youngest children throughout the day; there was a book fair for children to browse and buy some books and there was a also a drama workshop from Peter Jenkins of Fettes_College. The day was brought to a close with staff reading to children in strange places around the school and then with the Final of the school reading competition in Chapel. What a brilliant day and a big thank you to Mr Parker for all his hard work in organising such a Book Fest!

introTextThe joys of teaching Shakespeare!

imageAltShakespeare
leftColBody

I started my teacher training in the Autumn of 1991 and, at that point, there was a significant focus for teachers of English on bringing Shakespeare into the classroom for younger children. There had been some interesting research projects completed – most of which led into the Cambridge Schools Project led by Rex Gibson. Being based in Cambridge, I was able to attend courses run by Dr Gibson and learn from his techniques.
He proposed breaking Shakespeare’s plays down to individual speeches or scenes and approaching the text through drama exercises. I remember having to create freeze-frame tableaux as he read out certain phrases or organising characters into lines: in order of how old I thought they were, or sympathetic, or wise.

The Cambridge schools editions of Shakespeare’s plays are full of photographs from particular productions but, in the age of You Tube, I wonder how Gibson would now encourage us to teach the plays. It is so easy to stop a scene and look at two different ways in which professional casts have acted out that moment. Again, when I first started teaching, you had to wheel the TV and video trolley into your classroom; now you can bring a two minute clip immediately on to an interactive whiteboard.

I love teaching Shakespeare’s plays and the Summer Term at Cargilfield gives me a real treat because, with exams already complete for 8D, we can take our time over a play. Because the plays are written in verse, there are so many possibilities as to meaning or inference and 13 year old children are generally ready to debate or challenge – suggesting how they would stage that moment or what a word means.

rightColBody

This year we’ve been focusing on A Midsummer Night’s Dream which has all sorts of possibilities for exploring the nature of love: is it anything more than an imagined fancy which can change by applying magic potion, for Bottom tells us “Reason and Love keep little company nowadays”. Then there’s the way that women are treated in Athens (how ready were they for the #MeToo campaign?) with Hippolyta made captive by her future husband and the parallels in the fairy kingdom where Titania is tricked into a ridiculous love affair. Who do we laugh at finally – the innocent mechanicals performing the play or the smug young lovers as their audience?

The culmination of our studies is a trip to the Globe in early June. This year we watched Two Noble Kinsmen (a prize for any parent who has read that play!) and enjoyed how the company at the Globe brought a relatively obscure text to life. The Globe is itself a remarkable concept: the brain-child of actor Sam Wannamaker who came to Britain as a refugee of Senator McCarthy’s America and wondered why, when he visited the South Bank, there was no evidence of where Shakespeare’s plays were first performed.

If you are planning a trip south then I can only recommend taking your teenage (and younger) children to watch a Globe production on a summer’s evening – as a groundling from the yard just as the ordinary folk would have done (and for just £5 per ticket!) – and where you are ever more likely to become part of the production yourself.

The sun shone brightly for this year’s Summer Fair at Cargilfield and once again, great fun was had on what is always a hugely enjoyable day! There was a highly competitive cricket match between the Pre Prep and Upper School Dads, the Pipe Band performed superbly and there were lots of stalls organised by the children. In addition, a BBQ, bar and French Cafe kept everyone fed and watered before the Divisional Singing competition brought proceedings to a close. Lots of fun and a lovely day!

The traditional finale to the Summer Fair is the Divisional Singing competition and this year’s theme was Queen. We heard some old classic songs from the 70s which had the audience joining in and tapping their feet, but the after great deliberation, the unanimous choice of the judges was that Bruce were this year’s well deserved winners!

Today, 21st June 2018, is Clean Air Day. Mrs Oxley came in to speak with the children in P1 about Clean Air Day 2018. She spoke about the fact that pollution is a huge problem which the world faces in 2018 but that there are lots of little things which we can all do, which when added together make a HUGE difference. We heard about all sorts of things which we can try to do that will help; buying local produce, cycling to school, growing food in our gardens and walking to the park! All simple things which make a big difference if everyone does them. A huge thank you to Dr Oxley for coming to speak to us today! A very important message for us all

To round off what has been a wonderful first Book Festival at Cargilfield, with a whole day full of book related activities for all the children, we welcomed Peter Jenkins, a Housemaster at Fettes_College, to adjudicate our Reading Competition Final.

Each form in the Upper School chose a finalist and we heard some super readings from a wide variety of books. Mr Jenkins offered some words of advice in his feedback and then announced Cecily and Hannah as the winners. Very well done indeed!

Our caterpillars arrived on the first day of this half term. They have grown so so fast and then at the start of this week we can in to find them hanging from the top of their pot, forming their cocoons! It has been so amazing to watch the process of them making their cocoons. We are now closely monitoring the cocoons and the children in P1H are waiting with bated breath for the first butterfly to emerge! Fingers crossed it will be before the end of term on 6th July.

It has been so amazing to watch the process of them making their cocoons. We are now closely monitoring the cocoons and the children in P1H are waiting with bated breath for the first butterfly to emerge! Fingers crossed it will be before the end of term on 6th July.

P3 celebrated Clean Air Day this morning. Isabella’s mum gave a fascinating presentation to inspire us for our morning’s activities. We found out what pollution is, the different types of pollution, how pollution can affect our bodies and what we can do as individuals to help reduce pollution.

After learning a little about lichen and how different species can help to indicate how clean our air is, we went out into the school grounds on a grand lichen hunt!

We were amazed at the number of different types of lichen we found.

This was our first match of the season against Craigclowan which was unfortunately delayed as Craigclowan went to Cargilfield by mistake! We were able to watch the under 10s play when waiting for them to come back. We fielded first and Mariella did particularly well stumping girls out at first and then getting two girls out at third! We held them easily to three rounders. We went into bat and starting scoring quickly with Lottie, Anna and Mariella all scoring full rounders and most of the others scoring half rounders. Craigclowan made several fielding errors and their bowler also gave away some half rounders on no balls.

rightColBody

Amalia forgot to look and ran herself out! We had scored nine and a half rounders! Craigclowan only managed one rounder on their second innings. Anna caught someone out at backstop and Mariella again got two girls out! Amalia got Frankie out at second with some great fielding. We decided to bat only ten balls for Cargilfield’s second innings as we were tight on time and we had already won the game. We still managed to score a further six with Judith and Saskia being the star batters. Despite receiving ten balls less we had scored 15 ½ rounders to Craigclowan’s four. A victory worth waiting for!

We were excited to be playing in a tournament this afternoon. Our first match was against the Fettes B team. We lost the toss and batted first. Sophie got us off to a flying start with a rounder off the first ball. Ellie followed quickly with a half rounder. Clemmie was unfortunately caught out with a backwards ball on ball 7 and Calia and Amy H both scored half rounders by getting to 2nd base. The girls then continued to slowly clock up rounders with a stellar performance by Sophie with 4 and Amelia with 3. Our fielding was a little hit and miss to start with and we made a number of errors around first and second base. However, we tightened up our fielding fairly quickly and did well to limit the opposition team’s fielding. Final score Cargilfield 12 1/52, Fettes U12B 5 ½

Our second match was a much closer affair. There are some very good all round players in the Fettes U12 A team and we knew we had to be really on this if we were to pull off a victory. Again, we were fielding first and this time it took us a while to get into our stride, particularly as the Fettes bowler was extremely fast and accurate.

rightColBody

However, yet again Sophie led from the front scoring a total of 6 ½ rounders in this innings. Ellie and Issy also did well with 1½ and 2 rounders respectively. When it was our turn to field we were lucky to be able to stump out one of Fettes key players and their first batter at 2nd base. We were much more focused this time around and more careful to throw to 2nd or 4th base. Nevertheless it was neck and neck and the final count up revealed a draw. Cargilifled and Fettes U12 A 10 ½ rounders each.

Our final match was against Loretto. Again we were batting first. Sophie was excellent again scoring 5 rounders with Ellie on 4. Again like our first match our fielding a little bit scrappy at the beginning. However, we soon got into our stride and all the girls played well as a team. Clemmie made a super catch off base 3 and was excellent fielding around that post working well with Amelia on 4. Flora did well at base 1 and also managed to stump a key player out. Cargilfield 12 ½ and Loretto 7.

Final Tournament Placings: Cargilfield 8 points; Fettes A 6 points; Loretto and Fettes B 5 points each

Lost: 5.5 to 10

Under a better weather than expected, the girls played but unfortunately lost against Craiglowan by 4.5 rounders. They played two innings. They started fielding and on both innings they got many players out but gave rounders trying to hit posts instead of letting the baller stop the ball. Unfortunately their batting was not as good as their fielding due to being distracted and for some of them not being ready when it was their turn. In the future they will need to keep their eye on the game and stay with their team!! Still, well done girls and especially to Heidi Stirling and Cicely Watson for showing their skills.

The Leavers had a fun afternoon in Elie today at a beach rounders tournament hosted by St Leonard’s and the Ship Inn. After a BBQ lunch, the girls headed off to the beach to play a round robin tournament against Craigclowan, Loretto and Ardvreck, captained by Amy. The pitches were marked on the sand and it was a great new experience for the girls to play on the sand in the sun.

Our first match was against Craigclowan and this turned out to be our closest match. Craigclowan were a little slow to start with however they soon picked up and scored consistent half rounders. Suzanne was our star in this match for our batting innings scoring 3 rounders from 4 bats. Martha, Amy and Rosie all added to the scoring and we won 6 – 4 ½ .

rightColBody

We then played Loretto in a slightly one-sided match. We batted first and found our form quickly; Suzanne, Rosie, Esme, Calliope and Fiona all scored whole rounders in their first bats and further rounders from Martha, Fiona (x2), Iris, and halves from Emma and Suzanne saw us rack up an impressive 11 rounders. Loretto struggled to get the ball past our fielders, and finished with 3 ½ .
Our final match was against Ardvreck who had just beaten Loretto and were looking keen to do the same against us. We batted first and again, started strongly. Whole rounders from Suzanne and Esme in the first 3 balls showed Ardvreck we meant business. Esme was man of the match, going on to score a further 4 rounders and Suzanne scored a further 2 ½ . Martha and Amy both batted well and scored 1 ½ each and Iris and Emma both scored 1. Ardvreck stepped in to bat but just couldn’t score; our fielding was tight and we pitched the ball well back to 2. Rosie, Martha and Suzanne all made solid catches and we very nearly got the whole team out. Final score Ardvreck 1 Cargilfield 13 ½ .

Well done to the Leavers who won the tournament, and to Suzanne who was voted Player of the Tournament. A quick dip in the sea finished a lovely day spent at Elie and we look forward to defending our title next year! Big thank you to the Ship Inn for hosting the tournament and providing refreshments and food throughout the afternoon.

The U12Bs played a pairs match against Stewart’s Melville at Cargilfield on Monday in very windy conditions. We batted first and the best partnership was Finn and Amelia who both scored 11 each in their 3 overs. The pick of the bowlers were Ramsay and Suzanne with two wickets as we comfortably beat our opponents by 66 runs. Other good play came from Joshua who took a couple of good catches and bowled a wicket maiden. Izzy’s straight bowling saw her take a wicket and Finn, Quin and William C also got out a batsman. It was very pleasing to give three keen girl cricketers a game and they certainly made a big difference to our performance in every department. Well done everyone!

We were invited to play at the St Leonard’s Beach Cricket Tournament hosted by The Ship Inn in Elie. Famously, The Ship Inn cricket team play a number of matches on the beach in front of the pub over the summer and the boys were very excited about playing a different format of the game. We had 13 leavers who all got some game time in each of the two matches. In the first match, Findlay performed well with the bat, hitting 28 not out before being retired. Freddie A also stuck around to help the score reach 82/3. We managed to restrict Craigclowan to just 44 runs after some superb bowling from Marcus and Leo in particular but it was great to have 10 different bowlers having a go.

In the second match, we posted a total of 72 with Findlay again being the top scorer but partnered well by Marcus. Had they both not been retired, it might have been a different story in terms of result but we were comfortable for a while as Loretto tried to chase down the total.

rightColBody

We had a few moments of careless fielding with some over-throws. Leo took 3 wickets in 5 balls to make it really tough for Loretto but a terrific effort from one of their batsman who made 33 in total meant the scores were tied with 2 balls to go and the next one went for 4 to give Loretto their second win of the tournament and become the overall winners. Well done to Findlay for getting player of the tournament for his batting and great work behind the stumps. The main idea of the day was for the children to have a lot of fun and experience something new. A lovely way to spend one of the last days as a Prep school pupil and I am sure they won’t forget today in a hurry. Thank you to The Ship Inn owners, Rachel and Graham Bucknall and to two of their Cargundian children, Tiffany and Lachie for hosting us so well and preparing the cricket wickets.

P1 had a fabulous trip to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh on Thursday. Despite the high winds and the botanical gardens being closed we were still able to do our workshop on felt making in the Education Centre. Some of the plants from the glasshouses were brought in to the Education Centre and the children did some fantastic observational drawings of them. We then made botanical pictures using wool and turned them in to felt. It was absolutely fascinating to see the felt taking shape. Well done P1 a great day out for all!

Today P2 set off for Five Sisters Zoo with slight trepidation. Storm Hector was looming with high winds and rain forecast. On arrival at the zoo the storm had taken its toll. The wallaby walkway was closed as trees had been blown onto it and many other schools had cancelled their visit so it remained for the intrepid cargundian pre- prepers to sally forth! The animals obliged despite the wind and popped their heads out of their burrows to see who had braved the elements to see them.

Meerkats stood on guard, otters were fed and an angry porcupine quivered its quills. Harley, the parrot flew above our heads in the reptile house and Carmen, the brown bear, had a quick bath! The magnificent ex-circus lions were resting on straw beds and the Barbary sheep were clashing their horns. A huge thank you to all our adult helpers who weathered the wind with us!

Many congratulations to our Common Entrance candidates who have all passed in to senior schools right across the UK, many of them with highly competitive entries. It is great to see all their hard work pay off and well done to all their teachers too.

Along with our scholars, they head off in September to Eton College, Winchester College, Wycome Abbey, Radley College, Rugby School, St Mary’s Calne, St Mary’s Ascot, Sedbergh School, Fettes College, Loretto and Merchiston.

An U12 side headed over to Clifton Hall on Wednesday for a soft ball pairs match. This allowed a number of boys to play who hadn’t played many, if any, cricket matches before and what an exciting and super afternoon it was. We batted first and scored 76 runs through some impressive hitting and running between the wickets, although a fee needless run outs pegged us back a little. In reply, Clifton Hall had a couple of useful players, but regular wickets through some excellent bowling meant we were well ahead…..then the penultimate over saw them score 18 runs, so then needed just 5 from the final over bowled by William. Showing nerves of steel he did not allow the batsmen to score apart from a couple of singles, and with 3 needed off the last ball he took a wicket which meant we hard won. A lovely afternoon indeed!

After experiencing the full blast of Storm Hector overnight, Form 8 rescued the tents and moving kit to a barn on the farm, and then drove to nearby Ambleside and did a short low level walk to Rydal Caves. Back at camp they used the marquee for a different purpose and began salvaging what was left of the tents and putting up some spares for the last night of what has been a great week.

Many congratulations to this group of boys who produced a strong and accomplished performance yesterday against Carlton. Having narrowly lost to the same team a few weeks ago, albeit at the weekend with one or two players missing, we turned the tables and won by 8 wickets.

We set up the victory with an excellent performance in the field. We bowled straight and full, restricting their batsmen and women to few runs. Our encouraging chat was constant and kept everybody energised and focused. Their captain, a very fine young cricketer, hit a glorious 49 not out, and helped his team gain a respectable total of 125 runs. Everyone bowled well, but a particular mention to Ned who picked up three wickets in one over. Jack A took a great stumping towards the end and Edward caught two catches, sitters but they can still test, off terrific bowling from Leo and Rory.

rightColBody

We reached our target of 126 with 5 overs to spare. Glen started us off very well, hitting 19 runs of 7 bowls before hitting out to a lovely in-swinger that should have been nudged for a single into the covers. Jack A and Rory developed a good partnership together, putting on 53 runs between them and looking increasingly confident at the crease. Jack was hit by a bouncer on the thigh, which unsettled him a little, causing him to hit out a bit, leading to him being caught behind. That was the last wicket that fell. Rory, Seb, Edward and Max all came on and hit runs and we retired them to give others a shot. Jack S finally stayed on with his new bat and didn’t run himself out, which was a relief all round.
A very encouraging performance today, boys. Huge progress, increasing confidence and lots of enjoyment. Well done

Despite some blustery conditions in the first innings, the team batted first and scored 3 ½ with a great full rounder for Issy from a powerful hit. Some steady batting performance but a much improved Fettes team managed to contain Cargilfield stopping things in the field effectively. Fettes went in to bat for their first innings and had two good full rounders and managed quite a few half rounders. Another solid and reliable bowling display from Charlotte.

In the second innings, Cargilfield made more of an impact with the bat with three super full rounders from far reaching hits by Poppy, Bethany and Caitlin. Fettes then needed to get 4 to beat Cargilfield. Again they were strong batting managed to get quite a few half rounders to build up a second innings total of 5 ½ meaning they had edged the games in the second half.

Another good game for the team, great efforts from all involved and some super fielding on 3rd base from Rose, 2nd base from Lulu and in deep field from Clara. Great to see everyone enjoying their rounders and playing so well as a team.

We took a large squad to Fettes today so that all of our U12 girls got the opportunity to play. We were batting first and started fairly well with Katie scoring a rounder off the third ball. Flora then scored a half off ball 5. The girls scored a succession of half rounders with Flora the top scorer of the innings. We ended the innings with 5 ½ rounders. Our fielding in this innings was very effective, especially Sophie and Issy off posts 2 and 3. Unfortunately, Flora was hit in the face when fielding at post 3. She was very brave and luckily Lucy stepped up to field at the post. Lucy did well catching out 2 of the Fettes players.

rightColBody

We ended the innings just (and only just) ahead of the opposition. In the second innings we did not bat as strongly as we would have liked. Despite some gutsy performances by the girls and some split second decisions about whether to run or not run luck was not on our side. Sophie was the highest scorer of this innings with 1 ½. We ended the innings with a total of 10 rounders and realised that our fielding would have to be very tight to win. Fettes were excellent in this innings and slowly clocked up the rounders. Our fielding was good but not good enough on this occasion.

Final score Fettes 13½ Cargilfield 10

Win 13-13.5

It was a windy and showery day for rounders at Fettes. Luckily the heavy rain held off for the girls to play the full match. The girls started the first innings with fielding. Laura’s catching was outstanding on third base, stumping and catching a few of the Fettes girls out. There were a few half rounders given away due to obstruction. Thinking about positioning on the field will be an area the girls work on in training next week. Rosanna played confidently as bowler and took her time to aim the ball accurately. The girls worked extremely well as a team to throw the ball to bowler or second to stop Fettes from scoring any half rounders. Throughout the second innings there was a few panic throws and runs made which enabled Fettes to score a few full rounders and caught some of the Cargilfield girls out. The girls should be incredibly proud of their team work and catching skills. Well done.

P1H have started to learn how to measure this term and this week we have been focusing on weighing. We have been learning about different types of scales and how they are used to measure weight. We were able to weigh lots of different objects in the classroom including; rubbers, glue sticks, pens, rulers and scissors by counting out the number of cubes which made the scales balance. We had such fun, well done P1H!

The Pre prep ceilidh was held last Friday in the chapel, and raised £548.52 for Canine Partners our chosen charity. Thanks go to Caroline Brockbank for calling so professionally that no one was in any doubt about where to go or who with. Music was provided by Colin Garvin with his electric accordion, and we all danced strip the willow, dashing white sergeant, two step and the waltz, finishing off with auld lang syne.

It was a balmy Summer evening and parents enjoyed Pimms on Ash court to cool down at the interval, before the finale at 8 o’clock. This is an ideal way to have great fun together with mums, dads, grandparents, and even some teachers joining in, all for a good cause.

introTextA brilliant weekend at school!
image/cms/resources/img5446.jpg

We had an action-packed and fun boarding weekend, which was enjoyed by all. On Saturday we went surfing in Belhaven Bay and were blessed with warm sun and impressive waves. The photos published on twitter speak for themselves as the children were all able to catch waves easily and some even managed to stand up. It was such fun and everyone came out of the water exhilarated and exhausted!

On Sunday morning, as the Form 8’s set off on their Leavers’ Camp, we went to Combat Challenge Edinburgh where we were divided into teams and spent 2 hours shooting each other with laser tag guns. The wooded area we played in was at its best with lush ferns to hide behind, making the stealth approach even more appealing. In the afternoon, we all headed off to the Corn Exchange World of Bowling where everybody had fun ten pin bowling.

It was lovely to see all the children getting on so well with each other and helping everybody through all the challenges – especially the cold feet as we first went in the chilly North Sea! It was a most enjoyable and fun weekend and many thanks to all the staff involved who made it all happen.

The boarders enjoyed a brilliant day with Coast to Coast Surf School at Belhaven Bay on Saturday. The weather was sunny and after a delicious BBQ lunch, with wetsuits on and clutching surf boards, children and staff headed on to the beach. The waves were good and everyone managed to body board and some even stood up! It was a great day and we all returned to school tired but happy.

As part of their ‘Pirates’ topic P3P have been making full use of the Upper School Design Technology room to create model boats out of wood. First they had to draw accurate and detailed drawing of their designs showing their boat from different view points. Then they set to with hacksaws, drills, sandpaper and wood glue to bring their designs to life. After such a lot of hard work, lets hope they float!

“Miss D, Miss D I really need to ask you something! It has been worrying me for the last two days!!!!”

Given that the speaker was a rather excited young chap with a penchant for sailing quite close to the wind, I stopped in my tracks to listen to him.

“I need to know…. Are Einstein and Frankenstein brothers?”

“No they definitely are not.”

“Are you sure? One is Ein Stein and one is Frank N Stein.”

“Yes, I am one hundred percent sure they are not brothers.”

“Oh ok that’s it. I’m fine now,” and off he shot seemingly quite happy.

Anyone who works in a school like ours can probably give you several similar examples. It’s one of the joys of teaching. You never quite know what is going to come at you next. Cargilfield is an amazing place. The children, the staff and the environment all have their place to play in this. We are a community and we come together to support each other when we need to. Yes it can get a bit claustrophobic at times as you feel sometimes that you live and breathe the place but it’s pretty cool to see everyone mucking in with the Summer Fair, or two Deputy Heads and the Head lying on the floor painting boards for an Art show, or trudging over the hills en masse in July (not that I am a particularly enthusiastic participant in that, I have to admit.)

We are now almost at the end of another year and I have had the privilege of spending a lot of time with the form 8’s. They are a fantastic bunch, some of them have been here for more than 10 years and can’t really remember life without Cargilfield. Like every year, we will miss them when they have gone but know that for the most part they are really excited (and apprehensive) about this transition and life in the wider world.

rightColBody

When I was asked by Mr Taylor to write something I thought I would ask the form 8’s for some of their favourite moments and experiences. A taste of our lives from those who have lived it.

“At form 8 camp it was our turn to cook, Mrs M was putting in the spice but it was super-concentrated and she added three quarters of a pot! Even when we added 10 cartons of cream it was still too hot to eat and some of us went bright red when we tried it.”

“When M tried to jump out of a kayak on the canal at Ratho to look cool and fell in face first.”

“Fish and Chip Friday. It’s legendary!”

“Playing poker with Mr P on Thursday night boarding.”

“Rugby Tour against Sedbergh was one of my best moments. It was really fun and amazingly muddy. They still smashed us.”

“Sharing a room on Hockey Tour and inventing a chant to remember our room number.”

Maths Trip to London when C tried to make coffee and made us all late for the Maths Challenge.”

“Mr T telling us to keep our wits about us and then getting on the tube the wrong way on our London trip.”

“When we made a spoof of the 12 Labours of Hercules and filmed it around the school. R made an amazingly realistic Mr W and F was a convincing centaur.”

“Our choir tour was amazing, we loved it, especially when Mr T screamed coming down the drop slide at Wet and Wild.”

Another one to finish with. This afternoon, I was looking for a member of staff to talk about a non-urgent pastoral issue. I asked her if she was available just now to talk it through. Her response,

“Yes, no problem but I’m just off to be an iceberg. I’ll be with you in an hour or so.”

imageAltCricket
leftColBody

On an absolutely scorcher of an afternoon up in Perthshire, with hardly a breath of air, an U12 side took on Strathallan and it was super to have such an enthusiastic bunch of boys who were chomping at the bit for a game of cricket! Having won the toss and decided to bat, Harry and Will C opened proceedings and were going along nicely until they were both run out, one unluckily and other through a lack of calling – a lesson learned! Edo played a few lust shots before being caught when he should have left the ball as it would have been a wide; this brought Quin (37no) and William (31no) to the crease, and together they put on over 70 runs and batted very well indeed, picking up lots of quick singles (one or two were a little too quick!) and punishing anything short to the boundary. It was a terrific partnership and took us up to 141 for 4 in our 20 overs when we all headed off for a much needed cup of tea and gallons of water!

rightColBody

In reply, Joshua took a wicket with the first ball of the innings and wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals. We bowled very few extras and Lachie kept wicket pretty tidily too; perhaps we were guilty of not bowling at the stumps enough, but Strathallan found run scoring very difficult indeed and were 44 for 8 at the end of their 20 overs which meant a comfortable and well deserved win. Fergus was the pick of the bowlers, but it was good to see Will G get a wicket and everyone fielded well considering the hot conditions. Well played, boys, on a super performance!

The 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe programme has just been published, and we are looking forward to our collaboration with Eagle House School in performing Michael Morpurgo’s ‘War of Jenkins’ Ear’ from August 6th to 11th. Do come along and support some of our children at this year’s Fringe!

‘Toby Jenkins hates boarding school. He doesn’t fit in. When a new boy, Christopher, arrives and announces he is Jesus Christ, Toby is swept up into his strange world. Desperate to defend his new friend who promises miracles, Toby’s life is turned upside down. Is Christopher a fraud or really the second coming? As tensions rise between the privileged boys of Redlands School and the aggressive locals, is Christopher the only one who can end the hatred? Michael Morpurgo’s story is brought to the stage in a new adaptation specially written for this talented company.’

Win 21.5 – 4

A beautiful sunny day for the girl’s first rounders game after half term. The girls have been working incredibly hard in training sessions on throwing and catching. This was evident throughout the game with some outstanding catches performed by Rosanna, Hannah and Laura. Katinka and Rosanna worked extremely well together, with Katinka as backstop throwing to Rosanna, bowler, to stop Loretto scoring many rounders. Katinka also passed smoothly to Saphira to catch a few girls out at first base. Communication has been another skill the girls have been working hard on during training, which they used confidently today, especially Catherine and Alannah. Laura and Flora used their judgement wisely throughout the game with where to throw the ball. They thought quickly and efficiently. Poppy made excellent contact with the ball, with a few excellent hits. The girls worked succesfully as a team and as always showed great sportsmanship. Well done.

Annabella won the toss and elected to field first. Some really strong bowling from Matilda and good fielding meant the Fettes team scored 7 rounders. Chasing this total in the first innings, Cargilfield managed to edge ahead with 7 ½ rounders. A super rounder from Heidi S and another from Georgia helped with this total. In the second innings, the very first ball Iona bowled was hit back at her and she caught this to start the innings very well. Another great bowling performance from Iona with only one no-ball in the whole innings. Further good fielding meant the Fettes team could only score 3 in their second innings. Coming in to bat needing 2 ½ to win, Cargilfield batted well with a super rounder each for Valentina, Freya and Cicely. Great to see everyone enjoying their rounders and playing so well as a team.

The Under 9 A team were happy to play a return match against Loretto having lost last time by 2 rounders in a very close game. On this occasion we won the toss and chose to field. Venetia was bowling hard and fast and Loretto were having difficulty hitting the ball. We managed to get three girls out and they were only able to get 1 ½ rounders. Anna matched this straight away with a super hit and a good run round the pitch obstructed by a Loretta fielder! Venetia was also batting and running well. Indeed she was our top scorer for the match with a total of 3½ rounders. Amalia, Jasmine and Lola also scored half rounders. We had achieved 5½ for the first innings and were in the lead!

rightColBody

Loretto only managed 3 ½ in their second innings. Anna did particularly well getting Rachel out. So we went into bat again having won the game already. We wanted to do our best though and we did manage to score a further 3 ½. Loretto tried hard, managing to get 6 of our team out (some of our team need to remember to look before running!), but we were the outright winners with a good total of nine for the match. It was not necessarily our best performance, as the girls commented we do need to concentrate more. This will help in fielding and in batting. We will be going back the nets to improve our hit rate in the next few days! We did enjoy the lovely sunshine however!

It was a real pleasure to fill Mr Pike’s shoes for the afternoon and take the Under 11A Cricket team. In the glorious sunshine at Merchiston, we played an 18 over match and having lost the toss, we were put into bat. Unfortunately, we didn’t start well when Edward fell first ball but Glen came in to hit a good 18 from 12 deliveries as he and Jack got the runs flowing. Having made some fierce shots, Glen was unfortunately run out, but Rory played some patient cricket, hitting 20 from 30 balls and when Jack was caught behind, Seb V helped Rory to build a commanding partnership of 50. With 5 overs remaining both boys were retired to allow Max and Ollie B a bat and both scored some good runs including 3 boundaries between them.

rightColBody

In the final two overs, Ollie A and Harry arrived at the crease to give the U10 boys some experience for next year, however, they ended up facing their opening bowlers. This didn’t seem to faze the boys at all and they both did very well keeping their wickets to see out the overs. After a quick tea, Joshua and Max opened the bowling with very economical stats and Max took a terrific caught and bowled by diving forward. Seb L bowled beautifully and offered our wicket keeper, Jack a few stumping chances. Ollie A took the next wicket by hitting the leg stump as the batsman tried a pull shot. Max took another terrific catch and this time in the deep from Ollie B’s bowling and then Glen reacted very quickly to make a great slip catch when Edward got the ball to swing just outside the off stump. In the end, we couldn’t bowl Merchiston out but they came up 59 runs short of our total. A lovely day out in the sunshine and a good win. Everyone bowled really well and the fielding was excellent but especially from Max who was man of the match on this occasion. Well played, boys!

Over the course of the summer term P1 have been learning about shape. We have been consolidating what we know about common 2D shapes and building on our knowledge to learn about common 3D shapes. The children have been hugely creative in their ways of working with and describing the various properties of different shapes and have become excellent shape hunters by locating all sorts of 2d and 3d shapes in their learning environment here at school.

What a brilliant day the scholars had at the Houses of Parliament today. They were given a tour by Lord Dholakia, a Lib Dem Peer, and saw the broom cupboard where suffragette Emily Davison hid during the 1911 census. They also had a look at Horse Guard’s Parade where Trooping the Colour takes place this weekend to celebrate HM The Queen’s birthday!
