Another busy week of outdoor education!

Outdoor Education has been at the very heart of what we offer here at Cargilfield over the past fifteen years, under the expert guidance of Mr Laver. Whether it be skiing, camping, munro walking, kayaking, mountain biking, bivouac making, climbing, sailing, gorge walking, survival skills or camp cooking, hundreds of children over the years have benefitted from his passion for the great outdoors, learning new skills, building resilience and working together as a team.

Sadly, Mr Laver retires at the end of this term, but we are making the most of him whilst we can with children climbing at EICA Ratho twice a week, and mountain biking every afternoon for those who would rather not throw an oval shaped ball around in the mud!

Click here to see more of what the children have been up to this week.

On Tuesday 25 pipers and drummers from Forms 6-8 enjoyed a day of fun activities and rehearsals at Strathallan. As well as learning some new tunes for the performance in the afternoon, we took part in quizzes and games on a pipe-related theme. It was great to get together with players from Craigclowan, Ardvreck and Strathallan for a mass performance of ‘Bonnie Gallowa’ at the end of our concert.

It was lovely to watch the Form 5 drama production in Chapel this evening, 'Let the Games, begin!'. All the children took part as we followed a group of them captured inside various games, desperate to escape back in to real life! Lots of laughs and lots of fun; well done everyone!

Form 4 went down to the Nursery this afternoon to help them make some nature Christmas decorations from various bits and pieces that the nursery children had found in their garden and in walks around the school grounds. A small update from P2 following on from our dinosaur mayhem!

This week P2 have blasted themselves from the age of the dinosaur straight back to into the 21st century and become authors of their very own ebooks! It seemed only natural that the topic of our story writing should be in the form of ‘the dinosaur that came to our school’ and we set about last week creating imaginative and descriptive stories about a school full of dinosaurs. Where in the school might they have gone, what chaos may they have caused? Perhaps there could have been a pterodactyl in the Art Room flapping in the glitter! Or maybe a stegosaurus in the sports hall popping all the balls! We even suspected it might have snuck into Mr Taylor’s office, eaten his biscuits, drank his tea and knocked over his picture of Mrs Taylor! With our new found Book Creator skills I’m sure you’ll agree that our first publications as official book authors is something to be very proud of!

Look out P2’s ‘There’s a Dinosaur in My School’ will be coming to a bookshelf near you very soon!

It was a very rainy and windy game against Loretto at Cargilfield today. Within the first 20 seconds of the game Mariella scored a great goal, set up smoothly by Anna. A great start to the game! Venetia used her skill confidently throughout the match. She played an excellent turn and push pass, which was stopped accurately by Famke in Loretto’s D, and scored. Judith, Annika and Lola worked tirelessly on the wing, using their skill to pass by the Loretto girls with confidence. Judith passed to Lottie, who was in the perfect position to receive the ball and score a third goal. This was very quickly followed by Venetia, who was in the perfect position by the goal. Loretto applied pressure and pushed back into the Cargilfield D in the last few minutes of the first half to score their only goal. In the second half Isabella, Lara and Bea performed some excellent defence, stopping all attempts by Loretto to score. Amelia and Sophia positioned themselves well, which allowed them to receive the ball from Lara and dribble down the side of the pitch to Venetia. Anna and Lottie continued to work hard in attack and scored using strength in the D. This was a great game, with some wonderful skill and team work. Well done girls.

The A team were “rested” today and the B and C teams were pleased to play two teams from Loretto. The B team played first and it started off a very well matched game. Loretto pushed the ball quickly down into our D and we were under pressure straight away. Thankfully Tessa and Athena cleared the ball away wide, enabling Bea and Isabella to get the ball moving up the field. Bea scored our first goal. Dulcie shortly after crossed a great ball into the D, helping Bea score a second. Some super passing from Isabella set up a third, despite some good pressure and great defending from Loretto. We made a mistake not clearing wide in the last few minutes of the first half. The ball went up the field straight to the Loretto attackers and they scored. First half score 3-1 to Cargilfield.

Some good team work led to more goals from Bea in the second half with Isabella and Athena passing balls in. Rowan got much more involved in the midfield, tackling more strongly. Dulcie moved back to swop with Athena, joining Tessa in moving the balls wide. Whilst we let in 2 more Loretto goals we scored four more, resulting in a final score of Cargilfield 7 Loretto 3. I was particularly pleased with the positioning today. Well done, Girls!

The C team had a tougher game but they battled hard. We seemed to lack stamina at times with some nice touches but when we lost the ball we needed to keep right on going. Hattie played very well in defence coming forward bravely to tackle and hitting the ball wide and also in the right places. Nadia and Bonnie had some nice touches and once or twice we looked as if we might score. Loretto put three balls past us, but could have scored more if their shooing had been more accurate.

Final score Cargilfield 0 Loretto 3.

This was a bit of a wakeup call and we began to play some better hockey, equalising soon after and looking more like a team. We continued to grow in confidence and made some good passes with Issy and Katinka linking well and creating some good opportunities. The play swung from end to end with both teams utilising their breaks, and we saw goals from Poppy, Rose and Clara throughout the match. The tempo dropped a bit in the second half and we failed to put in strong tackles which let the MES girls back in to the game. Despite this, we battled hard and we had a nail-biting finish and came out 5-4 winners. Well done to all for carrying on in such wet and windy conditions!

The girls had a wet and windy match against Mary Erskine this week. The match was fairly even for the first 5 or 10 minutes and despite and early goal from Laura, both teams fought hard to keep in the match. Emma L captained the team today and she was outstanding in defence, staying calm and clearing the ball away wide. What impressed me today was the build-up of play; we didn’t panic and we worked hard at getting the ball played in to sensible positions on the pitch so that our forwards could make a run to receive the ball. Saphira and Laura worked very hard up front and Laura was rewarded by a hat-trick today. Our midfield fed some lovely balls through and it was great to see Rosanna looking strong in there, with Alannah pulling her opposition wide before bringing the ball back in to play. Hannah had some good work in the circle and she scored in front of goal in the second half. Catherine made some cracking tackles today and practically nothing got past her. Clemmie played a bit in midfield and picked up players well in defence too to stop the MES girls scoring. As always, Flora ran her socks off and worked extremely hard, being one of our stronger players. Amy had quiet then busy spells in goal and it was great to see her have the confidence to come out her goal a bit more and really close down the opposition.

This was a great battle in the rain with some unselfish off-loading to players running on at pace – something we had been working in training.  Chay showed his pace and strength early on to open the scoring after a great run and a well-timed pass from Maximillian M.  Kyan was looking lively and ran into the space well.  With the last play of the half, we were under pressure and it took a calm clearance kick from Seb to touch, to end the half 7-2 in our favour.  Robin and Alexander came on after the break and got stuck in and made some good tackles with Alexander looking to pounce on the ball when it came loose.  Adam continued from his impressive performance against Loretto last week and looked to pass the ball to team mates and Harry led the team well by putting his body on the line when it mattered.  I was impressed with Max A’s desire to get forward and he timed some of his passes very well indeed.  Chay scored four tries and therefore shared the man of the match award with Thomas who was everywhere: covering in defence; running forward with the ball and evading the tackle and really trying to bring the other players into the game.  Well done and well played, boys!

We probably played our best game today against a well drilled and speedy Dollar side.  Their tackling in the middle of the park was excellent and so we had to look to spread the ball wide.  Luca and James scored tries in the corners thanks to some great ball-winning from Glen and Hugo in particular.  Cody looked to feed the backs at every opportunity and our handling was surprisingly sharp today given the wet conditions.  Ollie worked hard in defence and looked to steal the ball at the break down with an excellent body position.  We recycled the ball well, putting through the phases and it was great to see us look to time the pass better to eliminate the defence.  After half time, Murray and Matthew came on to bring some freshness to the game as conditions were heavy under foot and there were some tired bodies out there.  Even though we always had the lead, Dollar kept at it and had some fliers on the wings; their off-loading out of the tackle was also excellent.  Had it not been for Rory’s outstanding tackling, the home side would have scored more but we came out 6-3 winners in the end.  Although it was a great team performance, Albie carried the ball well and worked his socks off for 30 minutes and receives the man of the match award on this occasion.

There was another terrific mini concert this evening in the music school. They are designed to give children of all abilities an opportunity to perform in front of an audience and we had musicians of all standards, some just having started and others more experienced. It was a lovely evening and some super music making!

We look forward to our Christmas concerts held in Chapel next week!

Sport at Cargilfield has always played a huge role in the daily life of both children and staff and the development of resources over the years has improved dramatically. This reflects the growing changes in a range of sports, and the ever-evolving technology of playing surfaces such as Astro turf. As a school, we found that our “old” surface was outdated and needing replaced. With the children needing use of an Astro for all three terms in a range of sports, we recognised the need for a larger playing surface which would enable all children to use it, rather than just the elite fortunate few. Santa must have been listening and this term, we finally got our wish and our smart new Astro and totally refurbished “old” one are now both up and running. Already the difference in the quality of coaching is evident, and it has been great to see all children, regardless of ability or age, have access to the surface during lessons, at break, at Games and in the evenings. The viewing areas are also much improved and we hope to have many many years of teaching and learning, and mostly importantly, fun, on our super new astro. Thank you Santa!

It was a real treat for everyone in Nursery when Mrs Nimmo came in to bake pumpkin pies with the children on Thursday. We had a wonderful time learning how to make pumpkin pie and hearing how it is one of the traditional foods which Americans eat at Thanksgiving. A huge thank you to Mrs Nimmo for all her hard work and making Thanksgiving such fun for the children!

A marvellous Friends of Cargilfield Christmas Fair took place this afternoon and we welcomed a large number of visitors to the school. There were over 20 stalls, including some organised by the children, and it was a great chance for some shopping and share in some Christmas cheer! There was Santa in his grotto and lots of delicious refreshments and tasty treats on offer too!

All in aid of this year’s nominated charities The Yard The Spartans Community Football Academy and Pilton Youth and Children's Project.

Many congratulations to Rosanna, Finn, Clemmie and James who were four of the 20 finalists in this year's Green Pencil creative writing competition organised by The City of Edinburgh Council.

Over 1200 entries were whittled down to just 20, and we were delighted to have four of the winners who were invited to the award ceremony at Edinburgh Central Library. Well done indeed!

image/cms/resources/img0891.jpg

It has been a long couple of weeks for the 1stXV with the tour down south and then welcoming Sedbergh up to Cargilfield at the end of last week.  We have been tested against the best, and have not been found wanting with the boys digging deep in to the well and producing some terrific team performances; as a coach, you cannot ask for much more, and to see these boys working so hard for each other and playing some really attractive and clinical rugby against some physical sides (and never taking a backward step) has been a joy to watch.

Today on what was the first cold November day of the term, we welcomed Loretto to what was a bit of a quagmire it has to be said!  They were a more than useful outfit having defeated us at the Ardvreck 7s and came to us having had an excellent season.  However, despite the conditions, the boys played some terrific rugby in the conditions, carrying the ball well, rucking at speed and scoring some wonderful tries.  Harry kept the whole side going forwards by playing the game at pace, but once again, the team excellent and worked so well together; Will moved in to the centre with Ramsay still out injured, and without our 'tackler' Jack today, Tom and Edward stepped up and both had fine games.  We did give away a couple of soft tries down the blindside which was disappointing, but to score over 50 points again, and show such a level of skill and commitment in what were pretty atrocious conditions shows how far this group of boys have come over the course of the season.  We still have three big challenges ahead, but I know that the team are up for them.  Well played indeed today!

The Under 10 boys braved the elements to take on Loretto in a 6-a-side match. Many of the boys had been used to the Under-11 rules and had to adapt quickly to the regulation changes. Having done so, they built up some useful attacks, offloading in the tackles and passing the ball out wide. This led to a number of tries in the first half, giving them a three try at the break.

Loretto came back strongly in the second half, fighting their way back into the match with some pace-filled attacks. We had chances of our own but a couple of spilled catches lost us possession and Loretto seized upon the opportunities to score two quick tries. Both teams began to score alternately from that point and the score stayed close until the end of the match with Cargilfield winning by just a couple of tries.

Well done to all the boys for their tackling and offloading.

Fettes brought two teams of six girls to play against our A, B and C teams. Our A team played first on the small astro and Izzy made a very strong new A team player. She and Lucy worked very hard to get the balls into the D along with Maddie supplying the ball from midfield. Savannah was able to benefit from this and scored two goals, one from a first touch by Izzy. We needed to put pressure on Fettes as Eloise in particular was very strong in defence. Maddie was penalised for lifting the ball but often we were able to win the ball back by having our sticks down in front of the Fettes players. Amalia was very strong for our defence so she stayed on for the second half. She was particularly good at coming out to tackle and then getting the ball moving wide. Esme came on in the second half and scored a goal pretty quickly. We were passing the ball very well. Savannah and Izzy scored again bringing the final score to Cargilfield 5 Fettes 0.

The B team came on to play next and were taken aback by a very quick Fettes goal from Jeminah. I think we were suffering from the cold and it took us a while to warm up and play as well as we are able to. Fettes caught us napping and then poor Lyla scored an own gaol. However it happens to lots of people at some point in their hockey career and I was very impressed at how well she was able to put it behind her. She pushed several balls wide to prevent further goals. We were much more with it in the second half and I was delighted at the quality of our passing play. I moved Dulcie up into midfield and Rowan back to defend and it seemed to work very well. Bea and Isabella worked well together passing the ball well, Athena was also strong on the ball. Bea scored two fine goals to even the match. I was delighted at how well the B team had fought back after a difficult first half. Very well done, girls!

Final score Cargilfield 2 Fettes 2.

The C team played in the sports hall and narrowly lost to the Fettes B team.

Draw 0-0

The rain held off for the rest of the afternoon for this game against Fettes. This was a nail biting game! The girls all played well and worked brilliantly as a team. Lola was extremely close to scoring Cargilfield’s only goal but narrowly missed. Fettes were constantly in Cargilfield’s D but defence from Sophia was strong. Amelia and Isabella needed to push further up the pitch to score goals as the ball reached Fettes D. Lara performed some wonderful passing to Bea, who confidently dribbled the ball down the side of the pitch. Arya worked incredibly hard but needed to stay in her position to avoid Cargilfield clustering around the ball. Amenah was not afraid to tackle the Fettes girls and confidently dribbled the ball a number of times down the pitch into Fettes D. A big well done girls, it was a very close game!

Well done to all the Dandy girls who competed at Fettes today. The A team had an end to end game but came up 9-3 winners against a strong Wosps team. Sophie, Amelia and Ellie played in this match and although they were challenged at times, worked the ball away wide and held their nerve. Izzy, Emma L and Amy played in the B team match which was much closer but again, their team came out winners with a score line of 3-1.

A strong second team, boosted by those girls not selected for the Dandylions matches took on a similar St Mary’s team.

It was a bitterly cold afternoon but the dynamic movement of the Cargilfield team off the ball kept everyone warm. Two early goals from Katie and Saphira put the St Mary’s team on the back foot and there would have been more goals but for the excellent performance from their goalkeeper.

I was impressed by our ball speed and selection of pass and was not surprised when Clemmie added a third before half-time. Although St Mary’s came back to score in the second half and applied some real pressure in the dying minutes (calling on Caitlin to make a number of saves), Cargilfield can be pleased with the chances they created and the style of hockey they played.

Player of the day was Katie although others made a strong case for inclusion in this year’s (or future) first teams. A super team performance and a very competitive game: the spirit between both teams during and after the game was excellent.

The nursery children have been learning all about Light through lots of different stories: one of our favourites has been 'The Very Lonely Firefly' by Eric Carle, where a firefly comes across lots of different sources of light when he goes looking for his firefly friends. The children then created their own fireflies using a stain glass effect with black paper and cellophane.

It was a pleasure to welcome Mr Andrew Macgregor, Senior Tutor at Harrow School and a Governor here at Cargilfield, to preach in Chapel this morning. He spoke about the importance of smiling, and connecting with other people around us each and everyday, even when life is tough; a smile can make such a big difference!

Thank you for coming to see us!

The sun was shining for Viking Day in Form 4 today! ‘Cathbad’ (or ‘Simon the Viking’), Ama and Ivor joined us bright and early to start off our Viking adventure for the day. They told an exciting story involving the Viking societal hierarchy, where the children dressed up.

The classes split up into two groups to experience handling Viking objects, including jewellery and food. However, the highlight of the morning was exploring a Viking boat: using real oars to ‘steer’ the boat and go on a round the world adventure. It was a real Viking experience! At lunch, the children had to explain to Simon how to use a fork as he had only ever used his fingers before to eat food!

In the afternoon, the Form 4s had to put on some scary faces and fighting talk as they used the shields they created in Design to perform ‘shield wall training’ and pretend they were preparing for battle!

They finished the day with an exciting Trading Game. The children worked in groups and followed a special trading route to ensure their team had enough of each item. There were some great bartering skills and tactics! Much fun was had and the Vikings really did invade Cargilfield for the day.

Madison's mummy showed the children how to line dance and Matthew's mummy helped the children make turkey puppets using brown paper bags, feathers and foam! Havoc in the P2 classrooms!

Yesterday when P2 came into school we discovered a crime had been committed overnight! Something had been in our classrooms, it had upturned the desks, emptied the pencil pots and left rather large footprints!

I wonder if our intruder has anything to do with our half term topic of dinosaurs?!

We decided to set up a camera overnight in the hope that we might catch the culprit in action! We discussed whether our dinosaur was a herbivore or a carnivore and hoped it was the former as we didn’t want to be its lunch!

Have you seen the dinosaur?

The cameras were poised ready for action and they didn’t disappoint! Yet again, P2 were greeted this morning with further havoc in their classrooms and we even caught a glimpse of the culprits tail on film! This time the perpetrator had even left its lunch in the form of some chewed-on leaves! The children were quick to point out it must be a herbivore. Thank goodness!

We decided something must be done so we made wanted posters to put around the school in case it has been spotted elsewhere.

Do let P2 know if you catch a glimpse of this prehistoric intruder!

Another Dinosaur update!

P2 came into a quiet, tidy classroom this morning with no sightings of our scaly friends! We weren’t left too disappointed though and set about thinking of a cunning plan to attract them back! We came up with these instructions for each class to follow!

Step 1. Collect vegetation from outside the Pre-Prep.

Step 2. Place vegetation in centre of classroom. (Don’t forget to hide away any carnivores in case you frighten your herbivore away!)

Step 3. Place camera in suitable spot

Step 4. Await your visitor!

Here are some pictures of us collecting the greenest, juiciest leaves we could find!

Fingers crossed we catch the intruder on film tonight!

introTextA terrific trip down to Millfield

After winning the qualifiers at Bede’s a few weeks ago, the 1st Girls qualified for the National Finals at Millfield. The day could not come quick enough and they were all looking forward to the day.

We flew down the day before and after checking in to the hotel, headed off for a little shop in Street. All sorts of bits and bobs wee purchased, and I’m not sure there is any chocolate left in the Lindt shop today! We headed to a nearby Italian for supper and enjoyed pizza and pasta before heading back to the hotel for an early night.

The day of the tournament dawned bright and dry and when we arrived at Millfield, the pitches looked magnificent. After our check in with Mr Walker at Cargilfield for his Twitter (!) we headed down to our pitch for a warm up.

Our first match was against St Faith’s. It was a very positive start to the tournament. We lost the toss and St Faiths started strongly, attacking the goal from the centre. Amelia tackled well and we turned the play round. We won a short corner which resulted in a long corner but the opposition defended well and got it away. Two defensive short corners happened quickly but Amy was outstanding in goal and saved both corner strikes. Sophie pushed forward but we ran out of time and entered half time at 0-0.

We looked very settled and much more composed on the ball in the second half. Ellie made some crucial tackles and Amy once again saved the day after a break away . Further strong sales from Amy let the game turn, and Ellie got a ball through to Izzy who won a short corner. Sophie had a cracking strike which went in the goal but sadly it was too high so the goal was disallowed. Spirits were high but despite a last flurry in front of goal, neither school could manage the important goal, and it finished a 0-0. A good start .

Our second match was against Cranleigh who looked strong in their first match. We started strongly and Emma in particular got the gall away well. An interception from Sophie saw her score our first goal of the tournament and further attacks from Sophie and Saphira soon followed. Katie saved the day in defence and made some crucial tackles in this match. The play swung from end to end with both teams playing good hockey . Ellie cleared the ball well from defence just before half time to keep the score at 1-0 .

We started the 2nd half off a little slowly and for some reason we stopped playing and the opposition pounced on our weakness and scored. As in the first half, the play swung from end to end but we just looked a little flat. They won a short corner towards the end of the half, and we conceded a very soft goal, from a poorly stuck shot. We ran out of time and lost the match 2-1.

We faced Winchester House next in our third match. This was a match that we really needed to win. Our defence was tested in this game and Amy was forced to make save after save. We lost a short corner and they scored from it. Our heads were a little down as the second half started and we struggled to get the ball in to the circle. Flora battled hard when she was on and it was great to see her raise her game and hold her own. The play swung to our attackers for a short spell but Winchester broke away and won a short corner from which they scored .

Our last pool match was an all or nothing match against Kings Hall, and we needed to win to progress. The girls were much more upbeat and this showed in their play. Sophie and Amelia played some great balls through but Kings Hall held tight and kept us out. Emma played well in defence and also performed strongly, playing the ball wide and feeding our midfield. Against the run of play, our opposition scored however we quickly got the ball up the other end and won a short corner from which Sophie scored from, from a straight strike.

The play on the second half was end to end with both teams having chances but the time ticked away as it always does, and it ended a frustrating 1-1.

Sadly our results were not enough to see us through to the next stages, and the girls stayed on to watch the final rounds of the tournament. We arrived with the intention to play our hardest, and the girls certainly did that. They should be proud of all they have achieved in the Qualifiers and Finals and I look forward to continuing success this season.

A big thank you to the swarm of parents who came down to support; as always it’s a massive help and much appreciated.

It was a real pleasure to welcome Lisa Kerr, the Principal at Gordonstoun, to preach in Chapel this morning.

She told us about how and why Gordonstoun was founded by Kurt Hahn and the human values that he felt were important and wanted to nurture at his new school up in Morayshire. She also talked to us about the school motto ‘Plus st en Vous’ - There’s more in you than you think - and how the children at Gordonstoun are taught about service, challenging themselves and about what they can do to help other people.

It was a pleasure to referee the U11B/C game this afternoon against Strathallan.  With two U11 teams playing up at Craigclowan, and with Strathallan bringing all the U11 boys they have, it looked like it would be a tough afternoon for the Cargilfield boys; however, after a poor first ten minutes when there were very few proper tackles put in, the next two ten minute sessions saw the team play some excellent rugby, running hard, off loading superbly in the tackle and off the ground and scoring some excellent tries.  In addition, the tackling was so much better, which nullified some of the large and hard running Strath boys.  If only we had done that in the first ten minute session! I think Starthallan won by a single try, but it could have been a draw - to be honest, the result is not that important, as the key is improvement and enjoyment......but our boys thought it was a draw, so my Maths may have been suspect!

Chay was the player of the day as he ran very powerfully and fast, but I was impressed with the whole team and there is certainly a bright future for Cargilfield rugby as these boys move up the school.  Thank you for a lovely afternoon. boys!

We brought two teams of six girls to play at Loretto Junior School. Natasha very kindly stepped in for the ill Athena and she was delighted to play her first away match. The A team played first and it was a one sided match from the start. Esme and Savannah made a good scoring team with Lucy and Maddie passing good balls into the D area. We took some time to get used to the short wide pitch and were guilty of sometimes playing the same ball as our team mates, so the half time talk centred around the need to spread out, find the pass and get the ball moving quickly. Our play improved in the second half, enabling us to score four more goals. Had we passed more quickly, which we can do, we could have scored even more, despite valiant efforts from an under pressure Loretto.

Final score Cargilfield A team 8 Loretto 0.

The B team looked to have a close match as Loretto caught our defenders napping and scored an early first goal. Luckily Isabella quickly answered with one of her own. Loretto scored another and it looked like we had a match. However Loretto seemed to lose their momentum and Izzy scored again. Indeed Izzy and Isabella scored lots more goals, Izzy 6 and Isabella 5! Bea added to the total with three goals. Whilst not all of the goals were well struck they still went in. Izzy hit one very strong strike however. Tessa and Dulcie defended well when needed and Natasha worked hard in the middle. Well played B team.

Final score Cargilfield 14 Loretto 2. Areas to work on include holding our shape and striking the ball with a bit more force and accuracy.   Well done overall!

This was terrific match of some fast-paced, end to end rugby in the wet at Craigclowan. Given the slippery conditions, both teams coped remarkably well with the ball in hand and made some lovely offloads. We had the slight advantage over the hosts given we had played a lot of rugby recently and were improving game on game. However, Craigclowan rucked better than us in the first half and got a lot of the ball. Our defence held strong and when we turned over the ball, we looked to pick and go and get them on the back foot before releasing our wide players. Matthew was feeding the backs who looked better organised with Rory at centre and we tried to get it wide to the wings. We were 4-2 up at half time and spoke about the need to continue to put in the tackles in as Craigclowan were running onto the ball with pace. This change seemed to have no effect given the home side brought themselves back to within a score after we missed several tackles in a row! However, we didn’t let the setbacks get to us and we managed to score some excellent tries in the second half through Luca, Ollie and Albie to secure the win 8-4.

We have come on a great deal since the first half of term and there were some tired bodies out there, which is no surprise given the enduring tour we have just returned from. Cody and James were fresh though and put in some great runs and tackles but today Ollie A was man of the match for his first half work at the breakdown and scoring a lovely try at the end of the game

U12 Girls v Mary Erskine – won 12-1

The U12’s had a rather one sided match against Mary Erskine today. Sophie and Izzy were in great form and disrupted the opposition, who simply could not stop them from scoring. It was clear we needed to make some changes so Izzy and Sophie dropped back in to defence, and we had an interesting formation of our defenders being strikers. The goals came thick and fast and Izzy, Sophie, Laura, Flora and Emma all added to the score sheet. The Mary Erskine girls did come back in to the game in the second half but just could not penetrate our midfield and defence.

1st Girls v Kilgraston – won 5-1

There were understandably a few tired legs today in the team, but nonetheless the girls took to the pitch in fine form today. We started well with Saphira scoring in the first 2 minutes. Katie tried her best to add to the score sheet but she was denied twice by the post. Sophie and Izzy linked well and we began to move the ball around nicely, which resulted in a few short corners. Sophie got a nasty blow to the cheek during one of these corners but battled on, which was just as well as she played a lovely reverse shot at goal which Izzy tapped in. With the score at 2-0 at half time, the girls knew they needed to keep working and Ellie made some great clear’s from defence. Flora had a lovely goal after an interception from their hit out and a further goal soon followed by Ellie by a cracking strike from a short corner. We won quite a few more short corners and Sophie finished the game off in style with a reverse strike from a corner. Poor Amy had little to do in goal today but did make some saves.

Wednesday was a wet and windy day in Perth but thankfully the heavy rain stopped just before we arrived.  The boys started strongly, scoring an early try but the slippery conditions caused an knock on which resulted in Craigclowan responding almost immediately. Further knock-ons lost us more scoring opportunities and a disorganised defensive line allowed the opposition to keep matching the score.  In the second half, the boys improved their defensive line and therefore were able to protect their territory more effectively, allowing Cargilfield to win by 10 tries to 6.   Although all of the boys played well and made strong contributions, Alexander deserves a special mention for outstanding tacking.

The outdoor education programme at Cargilfield is very varied with lots of excursions and trips during the weekday afternoons and at weekends.  We are fortunate to be on the edge of the city yet close the Fife and Perthshire  countryside just across the bridge, which we make the most of throughout the year.  This term, mountain biking in the afternoons has been very popular with trips taking place down in Cramond and also along the River Almond.

On Friday, the Nursery made their own poppy field of Remembrance by painting cup cake cases red and making them in to poppies using buttons and pipe cleaners. We then displayed our 'Field of Remembrance' in the nursery cloakroom for everyone to see. The pre-school children also went to the chapel to take part in the Pre-Prep Remembrance Service where Mr Taylor told the children about 'Peace Babies' and how they are now known as Jelly Babies. All of the nursery children then took part in a two minute silence in Ash Court to remember all those who have been affected by war.

P1F loved their trip to the Modern Art Gallery today. We learnt about the famous Scottish sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi. We looked at some of his sculptures, including the 7 metres tall Vulcan. We sketched the shapes and patterns we could see. We also looked in his studio and drew objects that inspired us from here. We then went to a studio of our own and began to create our own sculptures that could stand up on their own. The children's sculptures were so impressive and they all manged to build something that could stand up. Well done P1!

On Wednesday, Alexander's mummy and grandpa came in to nursery to share the ways in which they celebrate Divali. We learnt all about where Divali is celebrated throughout the world and that several religions including; Hindus and Sikhs celebrate Divali.

Alexander's mummy read the children the story of 'Rama and Sita' which is remembered during Divali. The children worked in groups learning about diva lamps, lotus flowers and garlands which are used to create shrines in peoples' houses during Divali.

The children dressed up in beautiful material with bindis and tried some Indian dancing. We then worked in pairs to create some beautiful Rangoli both in the nursery classroom and outside in the nursery garden. A wonderful few days celebrating Divali in nursery and a huge thank you to Alexander's mummy and grandpa for coming to visit us!

introTextTwo super wins against Belhaven!
image/cms/resources/img2754.jpg

We were pleased to welcome Belhaven to play on the newly resurfaced small astro. Belhaven brought seven Under 9s and did very well to play two games, against our blue team and then against the yellow squad. The Blue team played first with Belhaven taking the centre pass. Cargilfield went onto the attack very quickly and whilst Belhaven defended strongly, Savannah was determined to score. She managed to do so four times in the first half, often as a result of fine passes coming from Esme, Maddie and Lucy. I was very pleased to see the girls playing the ball wide and also occasionally backwards for the first time. Izzy was skilful in getting the ball midfield and then passing it on. She had a shot on goal herself, which ended up going in off a Belhaven player.

The second half was closer with Belhaven scoring their own goal. They had further possession of the ball in the D, but Lyla and Amalia had upped their game and I was pleased to see much stronger clearances from both of them. Lucy played some super passes into the Belhaven D and both Esme and Izzy scored further goals, two each. Super play from the Blue team resulted in a Cargilfield win of 9 goals to 1.

rightColBody

Belhaven showed great stamina having only a short rest before they played the Yellow squad. We did have some lovely skills from Isabella dragging the ball right and passing it on and Athena and Bea in particular working hard but we seemed unable to score. Belhaven defended very well and thwarted our attempts. Emilia injured herself unfortunately and Hattie valiantly came on to take her place. Hattie and especially Tessa worked hard to clear the ball but Belhaven were too strong and they managed to score 4 goals against us. Final Score Belhaven 4 Cargilfield 0.

We enjoyed a good chat and a fine match tea and were pleased to have avoided a very heavy shower!

They had further possession of the ball in the D, but Lyla and Amalia had upped their game and I was pleased to see much stronger clearances from both of them. Lucy played some super passes into the Belhaven D and both Esme and Izzy scored further goals, two each. Super play from the Blue team resulted in a Cargilfield win of 9 goals to 1.

perch_rightColBody

The 3rd girls had a great game today against a feisty Belhaven team. The game flew from end to end and Calia, Evie and Lottie put in some great tackles to keep the Belhaven out for the first 5 minutes. Belhaven broke through just after this and slotted one past Charlotte to start the scoring. They quickly attacked and we looked a little asleep and managed to score a second. Calia sorted her team out and it was great to see the girls really attack hard and we were rewarded with a goal by Rose. Charlotte made some great saves towards the end of the first half and with the score at 2-1 at half time there was all to play for.

Katinka and Clara came in to their own in the second half and it was great to see the two of them link so well with Katinka feeding balls through to Clara who more often than not, got on the end of them. Two goals from Clara followed and we were beginning to look like the stronger team. Emma worked well in midfield and she tried hard to keep the width which was great to see. We scored a final goal in the last few minutes and finished with a well-deserved 4-2 win.

The 1st girls had an interesting match against Belhaven today. We had played Belhaven earlier in the term and had a comfortable win, so the girls were fairly confident that it would be an easy game. This turned out to be far from the case! We started off well and won a short corner early in the game after some good work from Sophie. We did not manage to score from this and the play quickly swung to the other end. The Belhaven girls looked hungry to score and their perseverance paid off as they scored mid-way through the first half. This rattled us a bit and we grew frustrated at times, making a couple of silly passes and generally not playing our usual structure. Half time could not come quickly enough to be honest, as the girls were needing a little direction and some reassurance that all would be well if we played our normal game.

rightColBody

Izzy was quick off the mark in the second half and her 3D skills came in to their own in the circle. This resulted in a goal from Izzy after a bit of a scramble at the goal keeper’s feet. Our head’s were up and we spent the majority of the second half attacking the Belhaven goal. Their keeper was in great form and saved many a shot. Sophie made a great break through and crossed the ball in to Saphira who nimbly scored. With the score at 2-1, I could see the girls relax a bit and our normal flowing hockey came back. Goals from Flora, Saphira and Izzy all brought the score line to a more realistic summary of the second half however mention must be made of Amy who saved quite a few shots on target from Belhaven.

It was another memorable and poignant visit to the Ghosts of War poetry workshop at Edinburgh Castle today; 7L had a fascinating few hours spending time in the war memorial Chapel at the centre of the castle, exploring the war museum and also looking at personal gifts and artefacts from those who died in World War 1. This all led to writing a poem and all the children produced some really thoughtful pieces of writing by the end of the afternoon.

With the centenary of the Armistice approaching, it was another reminder of the sacrifices made by others, and of the reasons why we remember. A special thank you to Ken and Lorna from the education department who led the sessions so enthusiastically once again; they have looked after us for 15 years now, and it is always one of the highlights of the year.

The nursery have been learning all about 'The Gunpowder Plot' and Fireworks over the last couple of days. The children watched a puppet animation all about Guy Fawkes and 'The Gunpowder Plot'. We then worked in our groups to talk about the ways in which we remember the story on the 5th November by building bonfires and setting off fireworks. We also talked about how to keep ourselves safe when around or using; fireworks, sparklers and bonfires and practiced our 'stop, drop and roll' technique!

After 16 days at home on half term, we were understandably a little rusty today at the Ardvreck School sevens if truth be told, after what was a terrific first half of the season. We played some outstanding sevens at times during the day but also made some mistakes which proved crucial in a couple of matches.

That said, we won four games in the charity plate competition and so deservedly won the Plate, donating the money raised during the day to Poppyscotland, with the 100th anniversary of the Armistice on Sunday.

Well played, boys. A long day and we look forward to a very exciting week of rugby to come with the annual tour to Yorkshire next weekend!

With the impending exams roving on the horizon, my mind often wanders to how we support the ‘examinees’ to battle the coming tide of expectation. Pressure mounts and revision is diligently completed, or expertly avoided. The exams themselves occur with a surprising lack of fanfare and the children prove them equal to the task.

Of course, exams don’t ‘rove’ and they shouldn’t be a ‘battle’. However, they can sometimes cause a little worry in the children and, experience suggests, a little worry in their parents too.

Sometimes a little worry evolves. It grows. It becomes a mountain that seems insurmountable and when this happens a little worry becomes anxiety. Anxiety is a pest; it doesn’t limit itself to one area of our lives. It can grow from anywhere; I mentioned exams, but it can evolve out of difficult social situations, particular subjects that just won’t allow themselves to be learned, the thought of performing in the chapel or on the stage.

Anxiety doesn’t discriminate and so as teachers and parents we must learn to recognise the signs and be prepared to support our children. Anxiety is beyond a worry. It’s not an ‘overreaction’, it attacks the confidence and self-esteem that we all work so hard to build in our children and it is not insurmountable. It can be beaten.

Anxiety becomes a problem for children when it gets in the way of their day-to-day life. The NHS website usefully lists many of the signs of anxiety in younger and older children here but what to do?

Listen. Listen to them and give them opportunities to talk, if they want to. Hiding a conversation behind a joint activity can make it feel less like the Spanish inquisition.

Show. Show that you understand how they are feeling by summarising what they have said and checking with them that you understood correctly

rightColBody

Talk. Talk to us. We can’t help if we don’t know and children can sometimes behave very differently at home to the way they behave at school. There are many avenues to contact us; your child’s Form teacher is a very good place to start, but all staff have had pastoral training and are able to help.

I have been lucky in my years of teaching to work with a number of experienced Educational Psychologists. From this body of professionals I have garnered a few sage pieces of advice and the one that springs to mind on this subject is that ‘all behaviour has a function’. Anxiety has a function too, it is telling us to ask for help.

Fake it. If your child is anxious you will be too. In fact, if you’re like me, the very thought that they might encounter even mild discomfort will have your guts in knots, but you can’t help them with more anxiety. You need to seem like the oasis of calm containment they need for their emotions. A tall order, but another piece of advice springs to mind for this; ‘fake it till you make it’.

There are some great resources available on line if you would like to learn more about anxiety. I list them here with some further reading suggestions.

A total lack of interest in exams is a problem, it denotes a child who might not be taking their learning seriously. A preoccupation with exams is also problem, as it can cause children to forget the essential purpose of examinations; showing the child what they know, what they don’t know and giving them an understanding of what it feels like to be assessed in this way.

Our children are unlikely ever to be asked the results of their Form 6 Autumn exams in a job interview. In this way they are wholly unimportant, but as a learning experience the exams teach the children vital skills they will need as they progress through their senior schools. The sooner these skills are learned, the more time each child has to hone them to perfection.

What a marvellous half term hockey week we have just enjoyed at Cargilfield! The weather was superb all week and it was great to have so many children involved making the most of the new astroturf, and having lots of expert coaching to improve their skills and game play. It was lovely to have a number of former pupils back to help with the coaching, including Hamish who plays for the full men's Scotland team, and Jika who is in the England Hockey set up. All the children were terrific fun and we look forward to the next camp in the near future!
