leftColBody | Today was our first ever hockey fixture against Merchiston and we took an A and a B team to play their A team. Merchiston are new to hockey and didn’t have a goalkeeper, so Albie played for them and this gave him a great opportunity to make some saves against our strong forward line. The first match was our A team against Merchiston. We passed the ball around nicely and scored a few goals. Albie made some terrific saves but our players were on hand for the rebounds. James played particularly well on the right wing. In the second match, our A team played our B team. Cody dropped back to act as a kicking back and we reshuffled everyone slightly and it turned out to be a very even game with the A team coming out on top as 2-0 winners. Matthew opened the scoring for the A team by taking up a great position at the back post and slotting home from Glen’s cross. The second goal for the A team was a bit more direct but credit to Murray and Ollie in the B team, who worked really hard in both attack and defence. The third game of the afternoon was our B team against Merchiston. Again Albie made a huge contribution for Merchiston and it took some great skill from Murray to lift the ball over him for us to make the break-through. Charles, with his back to goal, passed the ball into the corner using his reverse to make it 2-0. Just before the break, Merchiston scored two very good breakaway goals to make it all square at half time. Immediately into the second half, Ollie dribbled very well through their players and slotted the ball passed Albie. Charles then scored a cracking second and the team’s 3rd with a volley. We scored another good goal after some great work from Charles on the right wing but Merchiston battled back to narrow the gap. We came out 5-3 winners in the end but Merchiston were improving with every minute. Well done to all the players today and it was great to see the boys playing some passing hockey. Albie was player of the day for stepping up to help out Merchiston but also for making some great saves. Thank you to Merchiston for having us on their new astroturf; it is great to see another school on our circuit playing this brilliant sport. We look forward to welcoming Merchiston to our new pitch next time! |

leftColBody | Blues: Drew 1-1 The Blues played first against Merchiston on a rather frosty afternoon. Individually they were good at dribbling with the ball and attacking but not so much playing as a team and giving each other movement away from defenders. This is something that we will work on in training and takes time to happen. We dominated possession for a lot of the match but need to be more clinical in putting the ball in the goal. Stripes: Won 3-0 The Stripes played second and played a much more team-oriented game, with each member looking to find a teammate more than the first game. We were strong in winning the ball in midfield and turning the counter on. Our striker sat high up the pitch and capitalised on the through ball to score the goals for the team. Our next big goal is to work on the defensive side of the game more and know how to switch between defence and attack and back again comfortably. Well done, boys! |

leftColBody | U11Bs U11Bs were first to play this week against Kilgraston. From the first whistle the girls were excellent at passing and moving the ball quickly up the court. In particular Georgia as C and Matilda as WA got into space and got the ball up to the net. Amenah and Valentina (Team Captain) wowed everyone with their accurate shooting and perseverance. After the first half we were ahead and faced a reenergised Kilgraston. They tested our defence but Cara and Cicely were there to stop them. In the final quarter Charlotte got her eye in on the shooting and overall we won 17-3. U11As U11As were on a high after last week’s win and were ready to take on Kilgraston. The first quarter proved a difficult start with Kilgraston girls playing well, especially the centre which Clara (Team Captain) did well to overcome. However, the Cargilfield adapted their passing, movement and defence around the court allowing Poppy and Clemmie to make some fantastic shots and pull us into the lead before the first half. In the second half the girls played some excellent netball and were an example for those who were watching. Well done to the whole team who won 19-10. |

leftColBody | The 3rd team hockey boys hosted Loretto – a return fixture after travelling to Musselburgh in the second week of term. Despite the cold conditions, the boys took control of the match early on, keeping most of the possession for the duration of the match. Passing in the midfield was good and the defenders quickly snuffed out any approaching threat. Possession was so good that our goalkeeper didn’t get to touch the ball for the whole game – frustrating for him but a good sign for the team. Opportunities to score were therefore plentiful but sadly only one was converted into a goal. Loretto did an admirable job defending their D as Cargilfield missed numerous opportunities to score. The boys can celebrate a hard earned 1-0 win but will be disappointed they could not capitalise on their chances to increase the goal count. We will continue to work on improving finishing in practice sessions. |

leftColBody | Won 7-5 The 3rds had a very close and exciting match against Kilgraston today. Both teams battled hard and it was very much a team effort with the result. Rose was on top form and scored 3 goals in the first third. Hannah fed some accurate balls in for her and Evie and we worked hard to keep the ball in attack. Sabine and Lottie commanded the defence and the Kilgraston girls found it hard to score. The second third carried on pretty much in the same fashion with Caitlin the stand out player. Her work rate to get in to a space was great and she won nearly every ball that came her way, despite the odd off side or contact! With the score at 4-3, the last third was always going to be a tight one but 2 goals from Emma and one from Evie was enough for us to pull ahead and win the match. |

perch_leftColBody | Won 7-5 The 3rds had a very close and exciting match against Kilgraston today. With the score at 4-3, the last third was always going to be a tight one but 2 goals from Emma and one from Evie was enough for us to pull ahead and win the match. |

leftColBody | Kilgraston took an early lead. They were faster off the ball and marked more tightly than us. Their defensive work in the D was excellent. We picked up and both Saphira and Clemmie scored. The second third was less productive for us and although Rosanna and Flora worked hard in the D we could not get the ball up the wings to our shooters. The final third was more successful for us. Laura moved to GA and Rosanna and Flora worked well in defence. Bethany, Alannah and Izzy worked tirelessly but although we picked up scoring 4 goals it was a little too late. leftColBody | 1st Netball v Kilgraston Won 18-13 The 1st girls played indoors against Kilgraston this week. We don’t often play our matches indoors so it was a treat to do this on a cold day. The first quarter swung from end to end, with both teams making strong passes. Flora and Emma were particularly strong today, and intercepted many passes on court. With the score at 6-5 after the first quarter, there was all to play for. We upped our game considerably and our trio of Ellie, Sophie and Amelia linked pass after pass. Three goals from Amy and 2 from Amelia saw us pull ahead to 11-6 at half time. Our play cranked up a notch in the next third and Katie stood out; her agility on court was strong, and she turned round most of the play. Amelia’s long legs moved her in to all sorts of scoring positions and she scored 3 of the 4 goals. We took our feet off the gas a little during the last quarter however Flora and Emma worked tirelessly and kept the scoring at bay. A good win against a strong team |

leftColBody | Fantastic investigative skills in P1P today as we explored the snow around the school. The children came up with some fascinating questions they wanted to know the answers to. Some of the questions we were able to answer, but some of the trickier ones we will need a bit more thinking time. These are some of the interesting questions we thought of: Why has the water not frozen in the water fountain? Why does salt melt ice? Why is there snow on one part of the roof and not on another? Where will the snow melt first? Why do some wellies leave better prints than others? What does snow feel, smell, look, sound and taste like? Is there ice under the snow? How long could you lie in the snow for? Could you actually freeze to the astro? Do you get different types of snow? |

leftColBody | P1 are looking at winter this half term and they have decided to build an igloo as part of this project. The pre-prep have been busy collecting us milk bottles and this week we decided we were ready to begin the build. We gathered our supplies, had a team meeting about how to build the igloo and planned out the space needed. First we laid out the milk bottles for the first layer - we needed 48 bottles just for this first layer! We will be continuing to build the igloo over the coming couple of weeks, but more milk bottles will be required. Please do bring any spare milk bottles to P1 to help us with our project! leftColBody | P1 had a brilliant trip last Thursday to Murrayfield Ice Rink. They learnt how the ice is made for the ice rink and saw the machines and pipes that keep the ice cold and smooth enough. We all then got ready for going on the ice, with skates, helmets, knee and wrist pads. Then we went on the ice! We were so impressed with the children's confidence and bravery. There were a few nerves to begin with but it was amazing to see the children conquering their fears and becoming more stable on the ice! After each little fall, the children got up with a bigger smile on their face, determined to succeed. Well done P1! |

We have been learning about why animals hibernate and migrate during the winter months. We have also been conducting all sorts of experiments with ice and water, looking at how and when it changes. We made ice pictures using all sorts of items from the nursery garden, then froze them in water to create some fantastic pictures! |

image | /cms/resources/dsc00783.jpg |
imageAlt | Science |
leftColBody | Science is a wonderful subject – a subject of exploration and questions. Investigations are utilised to provide proof for theories and in the process life skills are learned. This term children have already developed skills in: observing, predicting, interpreting, making hypotheses, classifying, communicating, recording, fair testing and drawing conclusions from the evidence provided. During the experimental process pupils are all encouraged to respect evidence, tolerate uncertainty, reflect critically, perseverance, be creative, be open minded and work co-operatively. The children enjoy the opportunity to partake in practical experimentation, and where possible there is a practical element to every lesson. The art of recording an experiment in the form of a ‘write up’ brings the children into a world-wide accepted form of scientific language and ‘lay out’. They are learning to be a part of an academically driven, developmental, thoughtfully rigorous world community – and all this is in preparation for their Common Entrance Exams and Public School Scholarship. It is interesting, watching the news and listening to the radio, and then reflecting upon how many of our politicians in these uncertain times are utilising the skills listed above – skills that many of them will have honed in their own science lessons while at school.

imageAlt | Astro |
leftColBody | On Tuesday 5th February we are delighted that our new Gillespie astroturf will be offiicially opened by Tom Heap, BBC Rural Affairs correspondent and presenter on BBC Countryfile Live. The astroturf is named after a former Head Boy of Cargilfield, 2nd Lt Alexander Douglas Gillespie, who died in 1915 at the Battle of Loos. Tom is the great nephew of AD Gillespie and is one of the trustees of The Western Front Way, a charity formed to build a path across the Western Front to honour those who died in World War 1. Three months before he died, Alexander wrote to his old Headmaster at Winchester College about the pathway that he envisioned as a remembrance for the war after it finished. He wrote that he dreamed of a “long avenue between the lines from the Vosges to the sea... I would make a fine broad road in the 'No Mans Land' between the lines, with paths for pilgrims on foot and plant trees for shade.” He wrote that he wanted it to be “the most beautiful road in all the world”. Click on the link to see Tom talking about the legacy of his Great Uncle. AD Gillespie is one of 125 old boys and masters of Cargilfield who died in WW1 and whose names are remembered on the war memorial in the school Chapel. |

The children completed the different tasks to the previous Maths Morning in their groups. There were lots of hands on materials and iPads to aid the F4 and F5 children to teach, and for the P2 and P3 children to understand the topics being taught. The F4 and F5 children were talking enthusiastically about their time in the Pre Prep in their following lessons. The P2 and P3 children were waving and chatting to the Upper School children in the lunch hall too. Well done everyone! |

leftColBody | Cargilfield A 2 Fettes 0. The A team played first and for the first third of the match the teams seemed evenly matched. Lucy our captain had won the toss and as centre took the first pass. The ball moved quickly down into the circle but our shot on goal missed and Fettes quickly got the ball moving in the opposite direction. Amalia and Esme worked very hard defending and they prevented Fettes from shooting. They were intercepting well and passing very well to each other, albeit I would encourage them to try to keep the ball out of the circle. Whilst we had more shots on goal the first third ended as a draw. In the second third Maddie in particular worked well and distributed the ball very quickly to Izzy, who scored a lovey goal. In the final third, Savannah came on as wing defence, Bea moved to wing attack and Esme and Tunrayo swapped position. This set up also has potential as Tunrayo intercepts well and Esme proved her ability as goal shoot by scoring our final goal. On reflection we do need to practise our shooting as we had many more shots on goal than Fettes. We also need to move more in the circle to help us be in better shooting positions. Centre and wing attack can help here. |
rightColBody | Cargilfield B 1 Fettes 0. The B team was captained by Lyla who played very well, moving the ball around the court and creating good opportunities for Nadia and Jacqueline. Natasha and Hattie also passed the ball well and are getting much better at reading the game. Nadia scored a super goal, the only goal of the match. Our defence needed to focus better as they lost concentration on occasions. Netball can change so quickly that we must always know where the ball is and where we should be to help our team. Well done on two wins, girls! Work to do but good effort! |

leftColBody | 16th January 2019 Cargilfield U11A: 7 – Loretto 0 We played some good hockey in our first match of the season with some commanding performances from Ollie and Murray who looked to push forward. Ollie’s passing was strong and allowed Cody time on the ball. Cody scored 4 goals and our defence stood firm with Albie not having to make a save. 19th January 2019 Cargilfield U11A: 5 – George Heriot’s 0 At the Stewart’s Melville ground, we played two matches with a mixed U11 team on Saturday morning. There was some nice hockey on display with Seb performing well at the back and Cody showing some good dribbling skills. Charles put in a good shift on the left but enjoyed a spell up front. Cargilfield U11A: 6 – Stewart’s Melville 0 It was another good performance from the boys with Ollie T getting stuck in in midfield and Kyan playing some good first time passes to his team mates. We weren’t troubled at the back due to our strong presence in midfield and it was nice to get a run out and see what the boys could do in what was for some, their first matches. |
rightColBody | 23rd January 2019 Cargilfield U11A: 12 – Fettes: 0 At Fettes on Wednesday afternoon, we played some of the best hockey I have seen from boys at this age group. One touch passing and excellent moving of the ball meant that we dictated the play for much of the game. Cody and Glen linked up really well in midfield and James came into the game a bit more in the second half, getting on the score sheet and getting some assists. Luca on the left was outstanding and he created some 2 v 1s with Harry who backed him up with a solid performance. Albie didn’t have much to do but made a terrific save which flew onto the post and was then cleared by Rory who was a rock in defence. Ollie played some nice first time passes into the D from James which opened up their defence well. Murray came on to play in a few positions but must work on his first touch to control the ball before making his second move. Overall, I was very pleased with the way we passed the ball but a little more accuracy and stronger passing is needed. Although we were comfortably winning from the first 5 minutes, we still must keep an eye on the lone striker who might drift in behind and be unmarked. Today was a terrific team performance but Glen and Cody were in top form when they linked up and were deservedly joint players of the match today. Cargilfield U11C: 6 – Fettes: 0 Duncan got the scoring going with 2 well taken goals in the first 8 minute period. Max showed some good stick skill but must try to play with his head up more. Thomas was great at tracking back in defence and along with Harry and Alexander, their stopping of the ball was so good that James didn’t have a save to make in goal. Oliver controlled things well in midfield and Chay scored a terrific goal. Cameron was lively and looked to get crosses in. A great team performance – well done, boys! |

leftColBody | U11As Netball vs Fettes U11As were positive, confident and ready to take on Fettes this week! They stormed ahead in the first quarter with some excellent shooting from Clemmie and Poppy. But Cargilfield didn’t stop there as they continued to show some brilliant defending, especially from Katinka, Clara and Venetia who marked and intercepted continuously to stop Fettes from maintaining possession. After the first half with Cargilfield leading 12-2 the girls showed great sportsmanship and slowed the game down focusing on their skills and passing in order to make the game fair. The final score was a 16-8 win to Cargilfield with the girls demonstrating great skill and integrity. |

They played well and improved their game, especially during the second and third quarters. Iona and Matilda managed to score some goals. Annabella and Isabella defended their goal but lost a few balls. They realised they had to pass the ball quicker and be aware of the player they had to mark. Heidi, Mariella and Annika worked well on this to try and intercept the ball more often and get it quickly to the goal shoot. Unfortunately, in the last quarter, Fettes dominated the game by scoring 6 goals against only one for Cargilfield. Still, well done girls for an interesting game to watch and some good sportsmanship. |

leftColBody | Won 6-3 On a bright but frosty afternoon, the boys undertook their first away match of the season to Fettes. Having watched the U11 play first and beat Fettes, the boys were keen to show their opposition what they could do. I was very pleased with how we played in attack; playing up the wings and then putting it into the middle, gaining possession in the middle of the pitch and quickly getting it to the attack. The more time that went on, the better we got as an attacking unit, which was great to see. However, our defensive work was a bit lacking today. It is very easy for momentum to switch in a match to the opposition and we must be vigilant in defence; keeping track of the runners, marking goal-side and communicating with each other. This is an area that we will work on in training next week. Well done, boys! |

leftColBody | 2nd Netball V Fettes The conditions underfoot made us a little bit tentative when we started out. However, we soon go into our stride. Laura moved to GA and although she was apprehensive had a really super match. Both she and Clemmie were on fire today and made the most of the opportunities presented to them by Issy and and Allanah who worked hard to get the ball into the D. The marking drills and the work we had been doing on feeding the ball to the D have really started to pay off. By the end of the first half we were 5 goals ahead. In the second half Fettes came back more strongly and increased their possession off the ball. Today however, they were no match for our defence. Calia and Rosanna were excellent around the D with Rosanna being very good at snatching that rebound ball. Hannah and Flora kept play moving forward on the wings and were marking tightly just as we had practised. Final score Cargilfield 11, Fettes 0 3rd Netball V Fettes The girls were determined to make their mark today and like the 2nd team were keen to try what we had worked on in training sessions. Rose and Evie worked very well around the D. They kept the ball moving around the D and made it very difficult for Fettes to intercept. Emma also played well and marked closely. We dominated the play on the wings with Malayka, Bethany and Fran using the space wisely and drawing their opponent out away from the ball. In defence Lottie, Sabine were also very effective. Caitlin whirled from one end of the court to the other. Her coverage was immense and she worked hard at every interception. I was really proud of the team’s efforts today. Final score Cargilfield 18, Fettes 1 |

leftColBody | The 1st girls had a strong performance today against Fettes and we really looked a different team to last week. We had worked a lot on marking this week, and this was very evident on court. Amelia and Amy were very good in the circle today and just could not miss the target throughout the match. In the first 2 quarters, Amelia scored 10 and Amy scored 9. The Fettes girls found it hard to keep up with our speed, and we used the width of the court well. Ellie and Katie deserve special mention as they worked particularly hard in the mid court and stretched the game wide. We were feisty on the ball and certainly looked the hungrier team. With the scoreline running away a bit at half time (18-3) we swapped the positions around a bit and goals from Emma and Catherine (our normal defenders) was a fun thing to watch. Sophie came off in one of the quarters and her absence on court let the Fettes girls back in; just showing that despite the height difference, we rely on Sophie a great deal to find space. The Fettes girls battled hard an came back in to the game a bit more in the second half, however we had built up too much of a lead and the match finished 21-8 to Cargilfield. Well done to the whole team; what a great example today of hard work at training paying off. |

leftColBody | Over the last couple of days the Nursery children have gone to the National Portrait Gallery to take part in their 'Wee Faces' workshop. The children had a wonderful time exploring the gallery and looking at the different sculptures which they have in the gallery. The children then got to create their own sculpture out of clay, using all sorts of modelling tools and art cutters. We then brought the clay back to the nursery for the children to continue to work on the sculptures they made. Click here for more photographs. |

imageAlt | Nursery |
leftColBody | The pre-school children did an experiment this morning which looked at how bears stay warm in winter; they wrapped a plastic bottle filled with hot water in paper (Betty) and wrapped another bottle of hot water with 'fur' (Bob). Bob was then put in a box in the nursery den in the garden and Betty was left outside in the garden. After lunch we checked the bottles and Bob was so much warmer than Betty! |

perch_leftColBody | The pre-school children did an experiment this morning which looked at how bears stay warm in winter; they wrapped a plastic bottle filled with hot water in paper (Betty) and wrapped another bottle of hot water with 'fur' (Bob). Bob was then put in a box in the nursery den in the garden and Betty was left outside in the garden. After lunch we checked the bottles and Bob was so much warmer than Betty! |

The children from Form 6, many of who were in the nursery at Cargilfield themselves, came to read some stories to the boys and girls. It was a lovely afternoon and great to see children of all ages enjoying reading together. |

leftColBody | It was a glorious sunny morning as P2 set off on their trip to Dynamic Earth to embark on our topic mission for this term ‘to discover more about space and our universe!’ We certainly weren’t disappointed with our jam packed day, filled with excitement right from the start, visiting a 4D cinema complete with 3D shark (yes it was terrifying!), fossil digging with Terry the Triceratops and we got to handle some real magnetic moon rocks! We even travelled right back to the beginning of time and watched the ‘Big bang’ explode above our heads! Some of the things we discovered we couldn’t even believe! Did you know that human beings are actually made of stars!? Or that the first animal in space was actually a dog?! Our brains were filled with fascinating and interesting facts and we came away with a whole universe of inspiring questions, which no doubt we can start to answer as our topic unfolds over the term! I couldn’t think of a better topic to take our imaginations right out of this world! |

image | /cms/resources/20190117194915.jpg |
imageAlt | Music |
leftColBody | Many thanks to Dr Ridley who came to Cargilfield to lead a highly enjoyable Composition Workshop with some of our musicians on Thursday evening. We heard a real variety of pieces including a song and pieces for wind trio, string trio, bassoon and piano, small orchestra as well as some more unusual instrumental combinations. Dr Ridley picked out the main elements and features of each piece, talking particularly about melody, rhythm and harmony, and encouraged us to be self-reflective. He also asked us to think about what our starting point was in a composition and how much we planned the ‘route ahead’ from the start of writing a piece. Well done to the participants who really had to apply their knowledge of musical structures and terminology to keep up with Dr Ridley! It was lovely to hear individual musical personalities reflected in each person’s work. |

leftColBody | The Under nine girls played 2 matches against St Marys on a very cold Wednesday afternoon but we were very excited to play. Cargilfield A 6 St Mary’s 2. The A team played first and whilst St Mary’s were very quick to find spaces and also marked well, our attacking four of Lucy at centre, Maddie at wing attack and Tunrayo and Izzy as our shooting pair gelled together beautifully. Quick balls were provided and four goals resulted from this excellent passing. Esme and Amalia were surprised when St Mary’s managed to get the ball into the shooting circle and were not as active as they should have been. St Mary’s scored a goal. Luckily the defence then improved. St Marys were better in the second half and we did not have so many shots on goal. We also had some players who definitely slowed down because of the cold. Next time hopefully all the girls will have more layers on to help keep them warm. Athena played the last two thirds as GD and worked well and Bea tried hard as WD as Savannah was injured. When Savannah came back on she moved well around the pitch and tried to intercept but she does need to remember where she is allowed go. We did not score in the second third, but in the final third of the game, Izzy managed to get two goals. St Mary’s scored their second, leaving the final score of Cargilfield 6 St Mary’s 2. Whilst we have some work to do on our marking and intercepting we did play well together and it was a fine first game. Well done, Girls! |
rightColBody | Cargilfield B 1 St Mary’s 6. The B team played against St Mary’s younger girls, with most of the girls playing their first competitive match. We tried hard with star players being Isabella who worked tirelessly as centre, Hattie, who got into great spaces as WD, Natasha, who, as WA, was also good at moving herself and the ball around and Nadia who scored the only goal. Some players were again affected by the cold and did not play their best. More layers will be needed next time, girls. Tessa made some good interceptions but was unable to score. St Mary’s were good at intercepting and getting the ball. They dominated the game with the final score being Cargilfield 1 St Mary’s 6. Despite the cold we all had fun and we enjoyed our match tea together. Thank you, catering staff! |

leftColBody | After a good week of training and working on the basics, the boys were eager to play their first competitive hockey match. Blues: Won 6-1 A fantastic first performance from the Blues. They took a little while to get going and working as a team, which is only natural, but when they did they dominate the possession and had a lot of attempts on goal. As the communication got better, we had more opportunities and scored more goals. Tom, Rory and Adam formed a deadly triumvirate in attack while Alexander and Oliver were solid in defence. Patrick performed the role of utility man well during the match. I would encourage the boys to keep working on their communication in the coming weeks. Stripes: Won 4-1 I was pleased with the way the Stripes performed. They increased in confidence and control of the game the more they played. Again, communication is still an area to work on. Alexander and Daniel were good in defence and kept Loretto’s opportunities in the D to a minimum. Archie, Conrad and Kit worked well in attack and were supported by George from the bench. A good first game with lots of possession and opportunities. The next area to work on is turning the majority of opportunities into goals. Well done, boys! |

introText | A super first game of the season |
image | /cms/resources/img0746.jpg |
imageAlt | Hockey |
leftColBody | In the opening fixture of the season, the 3rd team travelled to Musselburgh to play their Loretto counterparts. The boys played the match with a positive, attacking mentality and any defensive duties were usually away from the danger zone. Will and William played their part well on the wings, drawing defenders away from the middle and providing opportunities for those in the centre. Jaime proved his worth as a holding midfielder and Jack, who was also in the midfield, managed to score two goals. Oliver also provided a strong presence up front and successfully converted two of his opportunities to score. At the back, Monty and Alexander capably saw off the majority of threats and Joshua (in goal) took care of any shots that managed to get through to keep a clean sheet. A good starting point to the season which also gives us a clear idea of what we need to work on. Well done to the boys for their 5-0 victory. |

perch_leftColBody | In the opening fixture of the season, the 3rd team travelled to Musselburgh to play their Loretto counterparts. Well done to the boys for their 5-0 victory. |

leftColBody | Singing Games as part of the Music Curriculum Over the last year, one of the things that I have been introducing to children of all ages at Cargilfield are singing games from a series of books published by Linda Geoghegan, who I was fortunate to have a training session with last January. As you can imagine, practical musical training sessions can be a little nerve-wracking at times for teachers as we don’t want to look stupid! Picture the scene: the Heads of Music from pretty much all the independent schools in Edinburgh, some of us left handed, some right handed and many of us with an inferiority complex where coordination is concerned, standing in small circles with chopsticks trying to sing and pass them around in a complicated pattern that fits with the words – mayhem, lots of dropped sticks and lots of laughter! Linda really challenged us all with the tasks she gave us, but also showed us what a lot of fun it could be and how it would develop some really complex, ‘deep’ musical skills, skills which are transferable and are, in general, the ones that people are talking about when they refer to the ability of music to make the brain work better (Anita Collins ‘How playing an instrument benefits your brain’ and TED Talk is worth a watch - if you haven’t heard about this click here.) The importance of these skills was also stressed in our INSET training on Monday: musical pattern games help to calm anxious brains and can be used to literally mend traumatised brains, making them ready to cope with learning. So, today being Wednesday at the start of term, I’ve been starting off a cycle of these games with P1, P2 and F5 and it is lovely to see the children’s engagement and enjoyment, but also a measurable improvement in their coordination, focus, cooperation and particularly their sense of rhythm and musical pulse, something that can be really tricky even for our most able musicians. P1, right at the start of the journey, were exploring the strong beat in 2/4 and 3/4 time. The game ‘Apple Tree’ was a real hit, and, whilst enjoying the game of seeing who would be left standing when everyone else was knocked out, they happily clapped away in 2/4 until it was second nature. Moving on to 3/4 with ‘Bells in the Steeple’ is a big challenge: we only have two hands, and a pattern of ‘clap - one hand tap - other hand tap’ is tricky at first, but we quickly moved on to working in a circle to pass claves around (tap – pass one – pass the other); ok, we weren’t all successful, but it was a lot of fun and we’ll be a lot better next week! P2 had some games they remembered from last year. ‘Epoi-tai-tai-ay’ is a favourite. It’s a ‘nonsense’ song with different clapping patterns to do with a partner to match the different words. Working with a partner (and then swapping round) is a major part of many of these games, and creates that really great atmosphere of cooperation in the face of challenge that helps us to tackle things that would be tricky and stressful by ourselves. They also worked on ‘Bells in the Steeple’ and were able to manage up to 4 sets of claves going round the circle and singing at the same time with only the odd fumble or dropped clave. I know Mrs Spencer was impressed to see her class in action at the end of the time. |
rightColBody | F5 are working on composition in the music lessons this term, but have singing games on alternate Wednesday afternoons. Here we were able to move on to some much more tricky manoeuvres, for example moving round your partner every time you got to ‘ay’ in ‘Epoi-tai-tai-ay’ (and I don’t know why it is such a pleasure when you meet your original partner back round the circle, but it is, however old you are!) and when we started on a really complicated clapping game in Italian called ‘Bella Bimba’ the children were so focused on whose right hand was clapping whose left hand on which beat that they took the unfamiliar language entirely in their stride. The multi-cultural nature of these songs is one of the delights. Next week we’ll start to learn ‘Cape Cod Girls’, a traditional sea shanty that Linda Geoghehan has combined with a version of traditional Maori stick passing, and I know I will need to do some practice before leading the class in that one! We also started on a ‘rhythm track’ where coloured dots are laid out, in this case in groups of 4 to represent 4/4 time, and the children walk through the path in time with a steady pulse completing different tasks as they do so. Today we clapped on the first beat, jumped onto the first beat and clapped rhythms within the 4/4 pattern. This is another thing that looks simple but isn’t and one of the great musical skills it practices is getting back in with the ensemble unobtrusively if you make a mistake, something that the children quickly take in their stride when it is presented as a game like this. The singing games are highly enjoyable at all ages, but this term I’m trying out a different-but-similar option with F8s with a drop-in African Drumming club on Wednesday break times. Research shows that drumming has lots of positive effects including relieving anxiety and stress, boosting the immune system and releasing negative feelings as well as creating a sense of connectedness with ourselves and others … ideal as the children reach an age where things, including school work, relationships and self-image, all become a bit more complicated. I bought into this when I was undertaking my teacher training. It was the one hobby I committed myself to, travelling into central Manchester to play with Drumroots for 3 hours every Tuesday and I still find it hard to explain why it was so fulfilling and relaxing to sit in a circle with others playing the same rhythm over and over again (and yes, I was truly awful at it to start with!). As specialist in Musical Analysis, my mind wants to tell me that so much repetition should be boring, but it just isn’t, and because it is quite tricky it engages all your attention so that you really have to connect with the moment. And you never know, when the weather gets warmer we may be able to get a bit of an African atmosphere in our sessions by playing outside under a tree! |

leftColBody | We had a great start to 2nd and 3rds netball this afternoon. The 2nds played first with Clemmie as captain. We dominated the first quarter and scored an early goal. St Marys were slow to get going which we exploited well with some excellent from our defenders led by Caitlin at GD. In the second and third quarters St Mary's matched us goal for goal. Their marking was tight and they kept us on our toes. Issy worked well and Laura was a fiesty WA. Clemmie kept a calm head under pressure from an impressive GK. Saphira also shot well. Going into the final quarter we were 8 goals apiece. However. We just couldn’t hold it together at the end and St Marys steamed ahead. Final score Cargilfield 10 St Mary's 15 The 3rds also had a super game and were very evenly matched. Evie was a brilliant captain and kept her teams spirits up in the cold. Again, we matched each other goal for goal. Evie, Rose and Emma scored 12 goals between them and going into the last quarter we were one goal ahead. However St Mary's fought back with 3 goals. Final score Cargilfield 12 St Mary's 15 |

leftColBody | It was the first game of the season and the boys were raring to go. We played against Lorretto who we lost to last season. We started off a bit slowly and needed to be a bit more composed in front of goal. As soon as we scored our first goal all the nerves were gone and we started to play some very nice flowing hockey. Our midfield of Todd B, Harry H and Jack A linked extremely well and dominated the game. During the week we worked really hard on our short corners and all the hard work paid off with the boys scoring a couple of goals from them. It was a great first game and I hope the boys can keep playing this fast following hockey throughout the season. Well done on a fantastic win. |

leftColBody | The girls played their first match against St Mary’s today in rather cold but bright conditions. St Mary’s started strongly and we struggled to keep up with their sharp shooting and fast play. We clawed our way back in and Amelia scored all 5 goals to bring the game back to 9-5 after the first quarter. Flora and Emma swapped positions in the second quarter which evened things up height-wise on court and we looked much steadier at the back. We were a bit guilty of sloppy passes and simply were not looking for our team mates. The score crept up to 16-8 at half time but we persevered and our game got better at the third quarter progressed. Amy scored 4 goals in this quarter and looked much more settled but the St Mary’s girls kept pressing and began to pull away a bit. Ellie and Katie worked hard and covered a lot of ground and Sophie beavered away in the mid court and there were some lovely linking play from these 3. The final quarter saw us play our best netball and despite Amelia and Amy both scoring it just wasn’t quite enough and the match finished 24-15 to St Mary’s. |

perch_introText | A tough first game of the season! |

perch_imageAlt | Netball |
perch_leftColBody | The girls played their first match against St Mary’s today in rather cold but bright conditions. The final quarter saw us play our best netball and despite Amelia and Amy both scoring it just wasn’t quite enough and the match finished 24-15 to St Mary’s. |

leftColBody | P1 enjoyed their first coding club session this afternoon. First we pretended we were robots and we followed short codes to get used to the directions we would be coding with. We then did some 'unplugged coding' where we wrote codes for beebots and trains to follow to get through some mazes. It was tricky to work out whether we needed a left or a right turn and so we needed to do some de-bugging with our codes before we got them exactly right! |

leftColBody | Form 4 had Alasdair Suttie, a car journalist, to talk about different types of writing and journalism. He writes for The Telegraph, the Daily Record, Autocar and Octane magazine. He told us all about the fun and interesting topics he has written about. Form 4 asked lots of interesting questions too. Alasdair spoke about the process of writing from coming up with great ideas to a piece being published. We will be looking out for his articles in the future. Form 4 have been set the task of designing a car of the future with a focus on using green technology. Maybe this car will feature in one of Alasdair’s articles in the future...keep your eyes peeled! |

Beach School - This term the Badger and Hedgehog groups in the nursery will be participating in our Nature Kindergarten every Friday. However, for the first half of this term we are going to trial a Beach School and will be taking the children in the Badger and Hedgehog groups down to the Cramond foreshore on Friday mornings to participate in a range of activities such as rock pooling, beach combing and beach art. The first session was today and we had the most fantastic time! We are already looking forward to next week. |

introText | Using technology to inspire a love of the Classics |
image | /cms/resources/untitled-1.png |
imageAlt | Latin |
leftColBody | The Common Entrance and Scholarship syllabi are grammar orientated and rather rigorous at that, as any pupil or parent of a child studying CE will know. In terms of the Latin language itself, it will provide them with a GCSE-level understanding of grammar and translation. Unfortunately, this does not leave much room for Classical mythology, history or culture. These the areas that grasp a pupil’s imagination and wonder and really should be accommodated into the CE syllabus more than it is; a mere passing thought. No one studies Latin and Greek solely because of their love of the Latin language but to allow them to access Classical texts to engage in the culture, history and mythology of two of the greatest civilisations the world has ever seen and have given the modern world so much. I have thought long and hard about how to incorporate these cultural aspects into my teaching without watering down their understanding and my teaching of the language and their ability to tackle the demanding CE and Scholarship examinations. One idea that I thought would be useful and not time consuming in class was Digital Maps of the Ancient World. This idea was born from the stories of history and mythology that occur in the pupil’s Latin and Greek translations. The stories are generally discussed once they have been translated in class to give the pupils the context of what was translated. However, the pupils found it difficult to visualise where the stories actually happened; was it in Italy? Off the coast of Greece? Or in the depths of Persia? I used the Google My Maps software to plot the Greek Myths, such as The Odyssey, the Labours of Hercules and the Iliad. This allowed the pupils to gain a better understanding of the myths and where they took place. |
rightColBody | I have also ventured onto mapping the Roman Empire, again so that pupils can understand the geographical locations of famous Roman stories and historical figures. This is now all accessible on a website: www.digitalmapsoftheancientworld.com so that pupils can explore in their own time. |

perch_rightColBody | I have also ventured onto mapping the Roman Empire, again so that pupils can understand the geographical locations of famous Roman stories and historical figures. This is now all accessible on a website: www.digitalmapsoftheancientworld.com so that pupils can explore in their own time. |

We can’t welcome you to our grounds right now, but we can offer you a virtual tour and we can answer questions via email or telephone. We especially like to chat face-to-face on a video call.
We have places available for 2021 entry in most year groups.
For now, we hope that this video, presented by our Headmaster, Mr Rob Taylor, will give you a flavour of what life is like here at Cargilfield. Our website and social media channels are kept up to date and hold a wealth of information about our school.
Our Registrar, Fiona Craig is available to contact via email: registrar@cargilfield.com and she will be happy to help you. Thank you
