What is going on in the Science Department? Well, apart from learning about the standard Biology, Chemistry and Physics, there is a drive to improve the thinking and problem solving skills of the children. You may recognise this as a large part of the scientific approach in any case, with the need to develop a hypothesis, design and carry out an experiment and conclude on the findings. However we have been trying to widen the children’s experience to help their thinking, and to stimulate their interest in Science.

As educators we have the job of trying to prepare children for their future life, but it is very difficult to know exactly what their lives will look like. With the pace of change and the current uncertainty about the political landscape, who knows? It is likely that a high proportion of these children will end up working in jobs that are unfamiliar to us today; indeed, they may not even exist currently. It is therefore very important that we provide them with opportunities to improve their ability to think things through and help them to be able to tackle problems that they have not come across before.

Science aims to stimulate our curiosity in finding out why things happen and it teaches methods of enquiry and investigation to stimulate our critical and creative thought. These will be valuable skills for the future.

The British Science Week gave Form Four and Five the chance to carry out some new and interesting activities. On Friday 15 September we spent all day working on a wide range of different STEM activities (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

We investigated the sneeze zone- how far a sneeze can travel and how we can prevent others from getting ill. We were able to learn about the spread of microbes and their potential to infect people.

The ability to be able to come up with new ways to tackle infection is a critical area in medicine today.

7890204C 6676 4EFF 93FE CD67E7E02783

We investigated the problem of microfibres in fleece material and were horrified to discover that these microfibres get into our own food chain. This issue links with the need to raise awareness of the importance of looking after our environment. As the WWF advertisement says”we are the first generation that knows we are destroying the world and could be the last that could do anything about it”. Mr. Stephen ran a Dragons’ Den style activity which invited groups of children to design a possible solution to the problem of plastic waste, and pitch for the investment required to take their idea forward.

We also explored static electricity and discovered that is used to help reduce pollution from smoke stacks and in other challenging environments. We looked at a photo on an electrostatic precipator but probably preferred the twelve different stations where we were able to experiment with static electrify!

AB1FB94A 2A36 4E3C B2E6 C366624C355E

Engineering came to the fore when we were challenged to build the best paper airplanes and also the highest possible tower using only spaghetti and marshmallows and, of course, our knowledge of the triangle as a very stable building base.

870004C1 B822 4B74 A294 37C08BCD90FF

It was a very successful day, enjoyed by all the children. Perhaps the best moment for me was when a young girl said to me that she had never thought that she could be an engineer. Well, why not?

In the Summer Term we will be building a simulated neuron network to help us understand how when we learn something new, neurons in our brains make new connections. This links with research into Alzheimer’s disease, which is forecast to grow rapidly. One million people in the UK will have dementia by 2025 and this will increase to two million by 2050. (Alzheimer’s Research UK)

Form Five Maths plan to carry out a Waste Audit, identifying the waste that is sent to landfill. They will also carry out a Plastic Waste Audit. Both sets of data will be reviewed later in the year and we hope that we will see an improvement.

Science and Maths are very useful in helping the children learn how to investigate problems and how to use a structured method to do so. Ensuring that they are able to be creative is also part of this process. It is quite likely that some of the children at Cargilfield will go on to make a significant contribution to the problems of the future. Hopefully we can help give them some of the skills to do so.

On the final morning of term, we had our end of term prize giving with lots of awards rewarding children’s effort over the course of the term. As well as subject effort prizes, children received awards for music, fencing, skiing, sport and also for doing well in national Maths competitions.

A wonderful way to end the term and very well done to all those who won prizes.

Well done to Catherine and James who made it to Bonus Round of the Primary Maths Challenge . 70000 children take part and just 2375 make it to the Bonus Round!

Matthew won a Bronze medal so was in the top 2% of all entries!

It has been a wonderful few days for the U11 girls on their Netball tour to York. Our first day involved a mini tournament against Ampleforth College and St Pius A & B. We played in a variety of positions and showcased our great movement on the court. Lots of goals from our shooters meant we came 1st!

The next day we headed to Queen Margaret's School York, feeling on a high after our win. We played some super netball in the pool matches with particularly efficient marking and so moved into the finals. The girls fought hard and narrowly lost one match which meant we were runners up out of the 20 teams.

I am so proud of the girls and how much they have progressed this term. To only lose one match on the whole tour iwas a tremendous effort but most importantly they played as a team. They were an absolute pleasure to take away and thank you to the band of Mums who came down to support us!

‪Well done to our Maths team who won the UK Mathematics Trust team regional qualifying completion at Falkirk and so have made it through to the National Finals down in London in June. A fantastic achievement indeed!  They were  up against some very large Senior/Grammar schools from all over Scotland and this is the 7th year in a row that we have qualified for the National Finals in London!

P1P made the most of the beautiful Spring sunshine this afternoon by going out into the grounds and drawing some of the lovely Spring time flowers we found.  We looked at how the flowers were a range of colours. We had to look extremely carefully at each plant to draw it accurately.  We counted the numbers of petals and looked at how the shapes of the petals and leaves were different on each type of plant.

Under 13C Hockey v Loretto

In their fifth competitive encounter of the term versus Loretto, having won the previous four, the boys faced a strengthened opposition. In the first half the boys did not pass enough and sought to take on too much as individuals. This meant that despite the valiant efforts of Alex and Alex in defence, the Loretto team led by two goals going into the last quarter of the match. During the second half the Cargilfield boys had begun to pass more and communicate more effectively and slowly the pressure began to reverse and finally with five minutes to spare they managed to work the ball around the D until Jaime tapped the ball into the goal. The boys maintained the pressure and made a few more chances but the shots missed narrowly each time. Although the the match ended with their first loss of the season, 1-2, the boys can be commended for their determination and resolve to keep fighting.

U9A

The under 9A’s had a fantastic end to the season with a lovely game of netball against Belhaven. The match looked very close to begin with but thanks to our amazing passing and accurate shooting we won 9-0. It was a good team effort but a particular mention to Savannah who was new to goal shooter and scored some lovely goals. Great fun was had by all.

U9B

The under 9Bs has an extremely close game against Belhaven which unbelievably ended in no goals. With good movement on the court the Cargilfield girls did have more opportunities to shoot but weren’t successful. The team has put a lot of effort in and have showed great improvement this term.

U11A Netball vs. Belhaven

The girls have had a great start the tour by winning 21-11 against Belhaven. It was a well fought match with Belhaven doing some good interceptions. We had excellent movement when on the attack and ultimately that got us the win. Josephine was our captain and player of the match.

U11B Netball vs Belhaven

Win 16-1

The girls played well and enjoyed a nice sunny day playing on the astro. They were great at both defense and attack. Francesca was captain and the girls rotated positions each quarter. Amenah, Georgia, Iona and Anna scored goals for their team. They used the space well. In the future the girls will need to work on their footwork and marking.

Overall it was a good game and the girls can be proud of themselves for their last match.

Player of the game: Amenah.

1st Netball v Belhaven – Drew 16-16

The girls finished off their season in fine form this afternoon with an exciting match against Belhaven. As predicted, the match swung from end to end and there was never more than a couple of goals in the score line.

We started well and Amelia had her shooting hands on from early on. The play was tight and the girls from both teams marked closely. We found ourselves 6-4 up after the first quarter but we knew that Belhaven would be keen to get back ahead. And so they did! Frustratingly, we worked hard however as soon as we worked the ball up court, we made a silly pass and Belhaven pounced and turned the play around and scored. We let the game slip a bit and entered half time 10-7 down.

The third quarter saw the girls re-focus and much more composed. They clawed their way back in to the game; Sophie in particular worked her socks off and really did not stop moving all quarter. Katie made some great interceptions and kept us in the game. With the score at 11-14 to Belhaven entering the last quarter, it was going to be tight, and tight and exciting it certainly was! We upped the pace and Ellie made some fantastic long passes in to the circle which let Amy and Amelia claw us back in to the game. With the minutes counting down we turned the play around and Amy scored a fantastic goal to level the game 16-16. The clock simply counted down too fast as we had possession of the ball and were looking the stronger team by the end however a draw is probably a fair reflection of an exciting and fast game with our friends from Belhaven.

In the haunting surroundings made famous in Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code, the Chapel choir performed some lovely anthems interspersed with poetry written by the children inspired by our visits earlier in the term as well as some poems by Wordsworth, Keats and Shakespeare.

A truely memorable evening of music and special thanks to Dr Allsop, Mrs Alder and Mr Parker for all their hard work.

Rosslyn Chapel concert

35 members of the Chapel Choir and 4 members of the Drama Scholar’s Group gave a wonderful evening recital at Rosslyn Chapel on the theme of ‘Roses at Rosslyn’ on 19th March. The choir sang 8 pieces all from memory with real conviction and focus and we absolutely revelled in the wonderful acoustic. These were interspersed by readings, including pieces of creative writing written by members of F7 after their visits to Rosslyn earlier in the term. Meanwhile F6 had created a display of artwork inspired by their visits which we enjoyed in the Chapel at our ‘dress rehearsal’ on Monday night. What a memorable occasion and well done to all the children who have been involved in this project.

“Sooper fox is zooming doun in her jet pouwerd boot.”

“The see animls have been capcherd by the rued soap tub.”

“Traction man flies on to the cooshuns with his majic caip.”

“Youch screemed the eevl wien glases loudly and off they ran.”

“Sooper gerl saivd us screemd the see animils.”

“Laizer ies cratee cicks the eevl chears and of thai dug away.”

P1 have been story writing this term, a mere 6 months after learning how to write their very first sounds. Some examples of sentences from their story writing are above.

Learning to write is no easy task. The English language may have 26 letters but our language is made up of 44 phonemes, or sounds. It is these 44 sounds that children need to know how to write.

Some, like s, are pretty simple. In the P1 classrooms we learn a song, an action and play games and practise writing the sound and these can be picked up quickly. Some are trickier, like ai, where two letters join together to make one sound.

As we know as adults however, it doesn’t stop there. Although there are 44 phonemes in the English language, most of these phonemes can be spelled in more than one way. Take the long ‘ee’ sound for example. This can be spelled:

e as in be, ee as in bee, ea as in meat, y as in lady, ey as in key, oe as in phoenix , ie as in grief, i as in ski, ei as in deceive, eo as in people, ay as in quay

Tricky indeed! In the teaching of phonics and writing in the pre-prep these sounds and rules are introduced to the children slowly. We start with the ‘ee’ sound and teach only this sound, although the children are aware there are other ways of writing this. You can see above the children writing the word ‘see’ when it should be ‘sea’. Once this is secure, we introduce the ‘y’ at the end of the word, like in the word ‘happy’. This is a useful and easy to understand rule for them.

This slow, step by step approach works and importantly the children have belief in their ability to write from the very beginning. The children in P1 are writing stories, letters, poetry and much more thanks to this relaxed and step by step approach. They know they don’t know all the spelling rules yet but that doesn’t stop them.

Having won the Scottish qualifying tournament in February, the U13s travelled down to Millfield School to play in the National IAPS Finals.

They beat Gresham’s School 3-0 in the opening game of the group before drawing their next three matches which meant they ended up 3rd in the group, qualifying for the Plate. It was ironic that Gresham’s topped the group but a lack of clinical finishing in front of goal meant we did not progress in to the Cup competition.

In the plate quarter final we played our friends from Belhaven and in a nail biting all Scottish contest it was 0-0 at full time and after golden goal extra time. Sadly, we lost the penalty shoot out and were eliminated.

We ended up 13th out of 20 teams without losing a game in normal time, but it was a case of so near yet so far!

We have been up to all sorts of amazing experiments in nursery today! We have been making volcanoes with mentos and diet coke, watching ink drawings on plates dance in water, use air pressure to move feathers, made rainbows with skittles sweets in water, experimented with friction using cars and gutter pipes and looked at an onion through a microscope! Its been a fantastic morning of experiencing science in all its weird and wonderful forms in nursery, well done everyone!

1st Netball v Mowden

We welcomed Mowden Hall this afternoon for some netball as part of their tour to Scotland. We really had 4 seasons during the match which made for testing times; rain, wind, sun and cloud however the girls battled on bravely and were a credit to themselves.

We started the match strongly and soon found ourselves 6-1 up. Amelia and Amy linked well and despite tricky shooting conditions, successfully found the net. Sophie worked particularly hard in the mid court and turned the play round well. We started lobbing balls to our shooters which worked well as they were moving well off their players. With the score at 12-3 at half time, we knew we had to keep going as Mowden were keen to catch us up.

The play started again quickly and Ellie and Katie linked well together, finding lovely wide space and making some great passes. Our defence of Flora, Emma and Catherine were tested at times but they remained in control and kept the Mowden girls out for 2 quarters. We pulled ahead to 20-3 after the third quarter and it was clear by this point that a win was in sight and it was great to see the girls relax a bit and enjoy their netball, working particularly well as a team and looking slick.

Final score: Cargilfield 29 Mowden 3

2nd Netball V Mowden

We started strongly and in the first quater moved ahead with some super play on the wings from Saphira and Alannah. Izzy was on great form today directing play from the centre and despite the windy conditions Clemmie shot very well. By the end of the first quarter we were two goals ahead. The second quarter was evenly matched with both teams scoring 3 goals each. Flora played very well and Calia and Rosanna stepped up their defence. In the third quarter the Mowden shooters also began to step up their Game. Laura working well with Flora and Alannah also scored and we ended that quarter 7- 5 ahead. With everything to play for in the final quarter both teams were literally on fire aware that even the smallest mistake leading to loss of possession could end in defeat. Some fantastic shooting by Mowden allowed them to pull ahead but great defensive work from our girls stopped them getting too far ahead. Clemmie kept a cool head and levelled the match in the final minute.

Final score Cargilfield 11 Mowden 11

As part of our Roman topic and to celebrate National Science Week, P3Y looked at how the Romans used columns to support massive weights. We talked about how cylinders are the best shapes for supporting things because they have no corners. They then used a mixture of different materials to make their own columns to see how many trays of heavy Numicon they can hold. The winners were team Roman Pops, with 4 trays of numicon. Well done all!

As part of a very exciting Science Day for Forms 4 and 5 which included a number of science related challenges, the grand finale was constructing a tower made out of spaghetti and marshmallows!

The children had to consider how strong structures are made and had to resist eating their marshmallows too!! Well done to Oliver and Cody who created the best tower which is on display in the front entrance!

What a marvellous celebration of Scottish Music we enjoyed on Friday evening! In front of a packed audience in Chapel, the children rose to the occasion and there were some beautiful performances of some traditional Scottish tunes as well as some less well known ones too! All credit to our talented team of music teachers and a big thank you to Dr Allsop for pulling everything together at what is a very busy time of the year.

Next week, we have our music and drama performance at Rosslyn Chapel on Tuesday, the highlight of the musical calendar this term.

It was a pleasure to welcome Mowden Hall from Northumberland to Cargilfield on Friday afternoon as part of their senior netball tour. They have visited a few times before and it is always lovely to have them to visit.

Both the 1st and 2nd girls played very well in what was some wild and windy weather! Hand warmers and gloves were needed at half time but we saw two terrific games of netball and our girls really did ply well and deserved their wins! Afterwards, there was a quick match tea before waving Mowden off as they headed further north!

Well played, girls!

Our talented team of Year 5 mathematicians performed very well in the Merchiston Maths Day, competing against 31 other teams.

After the morning challenge they were lying in third position. Half way through the day there were in the top five and at after a very exhausting Maths relay, they finished in third position with 815 points.

ESMS B team pipped them by one point at 816 points and George Watsons A team won by a margin with 843 points. A very good day was had by all!

U11 Netball Ardvreck Tournament

The U11s were in a hard group this tournament with matches against Craigclowan, Fettes and St. Mary’s. We started against Craigclowan where it took us a while to warm up, but eventually we got into good space and won 2-1. Unfortunately our biggest rivals St. Mary’s were on top form and despite a good effort from the girls they had a better pace and accuracy than us and we were defeated. We then faced Fettes straight after and feeling tired after our previous game didn’t put in our best performances needed to win. Well done to Katinka (player of the match) who stood out for getting into space, intercepting and keeping the team on the attack.

The Under 10A boys hockey team hosted Craigclowan on the Gillespie pitch for some 7-a-side hockey with no goalkeepers. Thabo, Xander and Thomas provided a stable defence for the team which freed up the midfield to focus on their roles. Charlie, Max and Oliver were able to control the midfield for much of the game by intercepting passes and distributing the ball effectively both wide to the wings and through to the forwards. Ewan and Cameron produced a fine performance on the wings and when they kept good width they caused problems for the opposition’s defence. James proved difficult to mark and made the most of his opportunities to score 4 great goals. The result was a comfortable win to the home side.

Luckily the wind had died down and the sun had come out to shine on the Harper Gow court. We were pleased to welcome 4 Loretto girls who joined three teams for a mixed tournament. It was very evenly matched and in the end went down to points difference. The Yellow team won with one point ahead. We shared some tactics also and hope to improve on our dodging for the next game. Good fun and great exercise was enjoyed by all.

Won 6-3

The boys had to adjust quite a lot today to play their usual game in the Sports Hall, having trained on the astro every training session. Cargilfield dominated possession but found it hard to pass through the midfield, up the wing and into the centre accurately due to congestion. Resulting in a lot of hitting the ball of the wall. I thought they played well in the conditions handed to them and had quite a few shots on goal and were unlucky to concede as many goals as they did. Although, marking the opposition is still a big area to work on.

Well done, boys!

It was incredibly windy at Loretto today so playing conditions were not ideal. However, the girls were on good form and quickly took the lead. Their footwork was very good today and they played very well as a team finding space on the wings. By the end of the first quarter we were two goals ahead. The second and third quarters continued in very much the same vein. There was some super work on the wings from Alannah, Flora, Saphira and Fran who got the ball up to Laura and Clemmie in the D. If it had been less windy I think our final goal total would have been higher. However, Clemmie and Laura persisted and we slowly grew our lead. In the final quarter Loretto stepped up their play and were much more active in their D with several shots at goal. However, luck was not on their side today.

Final score Cargilfield 10, Loretto 0

The girls travelled to Ardvreck this week for the annual Ardvreck Netball Tournament. In the past we have played in snow, rain, hail and glorious sunshine, and this year we were lucky to have a dry bright day, albeit a little blustery.

The matches were 5 minutes each way so not a lot of time to make any errors!

Our first match was against Craigclowan and in true Cargilfield style, we took a while to settle in to the game. The play was end to end with both teams making a few stray passes however we begun to find our form and our shooters steadied the ship and we pulled ahead of Craigclowan to win 7-5.

Our next match was against St Mary’s who we have won and lost to this season. I’m not quite sure what happened in this match but our performance here was perhaps the best I have seen all term! Our passes were slick and our movement off the ball was particularly good. Amelia in particular was a star and scored 7 out of 8 goals. Flora also stood out and intercepted practically every ball that came her way. An impressive team effort saw us win this match 8-3.

Our match against Fettes was always going to be tough but we dug deep and played well. We were very much in the match in the first half and with the score at 2-2 at half time, we knew there wasn’t going to be much in it. Sadly, a few stray passes were pounced on by Fettes and in the second half they pulled away and won 5-2, however this was another good game to watch.

Our pool results were enough to see us top the table and we played in a semi final against Kilgraston. Amy had her shooting hands on in this game and scored both our first half goals. We used our lob well in this match and out-foxed the Kilgraston girls with this tactic. Two further goals from Amelia was enough for us to win the match 4-2 and progress to the final.

The final against Belhaven couldn’t have been any closer and both teams played some lovely netball. The scoring went with the centre pass for the whole of the first half and as there was nothing to split the teams, we entered half time 4-3 down. A little bit of panic set in and we missed a couple of passes; Belhaven intercepted and scored which let them pull ahead to 5-3. We fought hard to get back in the match and a goal from Amelia brought the game back to 5-4 but we ran out of time and sadly lost the final. Well done to the Belhaven girls; a great match and it bodes well for an exciting match next week.

The nursery children all went to the National Museum of Scotland today to take part in a Clocks and Cogs workshop.  The children learnt all about what engineers do and how they help people; design, build and fix things.  We learnt all about levers, cogs and clocks with lots of practical activities experimenting with how these things work.  We also got to see the Ritchie Clock on the first floor of the museum, where you can see all the cogs and levers at work inside the clock mechanism.  It was fascinating!  Some of the children also had the opportunity to see some of the other exhibits in the museum too.  A fantastic day out for all the nursery, well done everyone!

Planting in the nursery allotment - Lots of work has been going on in the nursery allotment over the last few weeks getting the planting beds ready for seeds to be planted. The children and staff have been working hard. We hope to have lots of different seeds planted before the Easter holidays so that when we return in the summer term we might come back to some seedlings or plants growing!

image/cms/resources/img0579.jpg

It certainly isn’t every Monday afternoon you get to fly into space inside your own personal planetarium! This is what P2 had the excitement of experiencing this afternoon as Generation Science set up their ‘Space Base’ camp in the Pre-Prep hall for our enjoyment! A journey through space started at the setting of the sun then took off, leaving us dazzled by the lights and sights our galaxy has to offer all above our heads! Our wealth of recently gathered space knowledge aided our journey as we discussed, answered questions on and gazed at all eight of the planets that make up our solar system.

By the end of it no question was left unanswered as we even queried and calculated how many Jupiter’s would fit into the Sun! We talked about numerous past and present space adventures and discoveries and were excited to learn that by the time scientists have a manned trip to Mars operational, some of us will in fact be the perfect age to be astronauts aboard the mission! An excellent potential for a 28-manned Scottish Space Programme we feel! What a truly magnificent way to begin to bring to close our space topic for this term.

One small step for P2, one giant leap for our learning!

Some of Form 6 enjoyed a trip to Murrayfield to see Scotland take on Wales in the Guinness 6 Nations and after two defeats in a row, we were hoping that today might be the day that Wales’ Grand Slam hopes came to an end.

Sadly, it was not to be. Despite a terrific final quarter when Scotland had some chances to take the lead, Wales hung on to win. A brilliant afternoon and an amazing atmosphere once again!

Rory had a memorable day out at Lord’s playing for the Grange CC Under 11s in a tournament in the Indoor School at the Nursery End of the ground. He batted very well throughout the day helping Grange reach the final which they unfortunately lost, but certainly a day never to be forgotten!

The Nursery learned all about Shrove Tuesday this week and made some pancakes together. After tossing them, the children then ate them for their afternoon snack. Mmmmm. Delicious!

Children's voice - An important part of the children's learning in the Nursery at Cargilfield is the children sharing and documenting their ideas and suggestions for their learning. The children have been recording all of these things in their group books which in turn shapes the teachers' planning. This week we have been recording 'The Children's Voice' on our new Spring topic.

P3 is an interesting year group to take on. The last year group in the Pre Prep, it is around this time of year that we start looking at moving up to the Upper School and all the things that come with that. Below are some thoughts from P3Y about this year and what they are looking forward to in the Upper School.

What has been your favourite lesson/subject of P3?

Art is my favourite subject because we have been making roman helmets – George

I like P.E. because we have been learning about tennis – Monty

Maths is good because its is quite challenging and challenges are good for me. – Wolfie

I like maths because I like adding and multiplication. I like using hundreds, tens and units to help me out – Iain

I like maths because we have been learning how to use money with coins. – Abbie Rose

I like writing because we wrote stories about the Bear and the Hare and we wrote about our visit to the Roman museum. – Emilia

I like topic because we have been learning about the Romans. My favourite bit was when we had a visit from the Roman soldier. – Matthjis

I like art because sometimes it’s a surprise and its really fun. – Beatrice

I liked writing about the Farm visit on the iPads – Archie

I like P.E. because we get to go on the soft mats and do gymnastics – Sasha

I liked it when the Roman soldier came and we got to try out his armour. – Alexander

I liked it when we drew the outlines of each other to create our own full sized Roman Soldier. – Malysa

My favourite bit of topic was designing our Roman shields. – Gabriella

I like topic because we got to make Roman soldiers – Dexter

I like music because we are starting to learn how to play the recorder – Maxi

I like topic because we got a visit from a Roman soldier. He taught us how to march!

I’m excited to try the new uniform. – Malysa

I’m looking forward to doing more sports and learning about decimals. – Wilfred

I’m looking forward to walking to classes by myself. – Everyone

I’m looking forward to having more French. – Gabriella

I’m looking forward to meeting new friends. – Everyone

Is there anything you are going to miss about the Pre Prep?

I’ll miss filling out my merit card. – Maxi

I will miss all the nice teachers – Everyone

I will miss story time at the end of the day. – Abbie Rose

So there you have it! There is some definite excitement about what next year will bring but P3 should know that they are always welcome to come down to the Pre-Prep to see their old teachers when they are in Form 4. It is only a short walk away!

Seven of the U9 squad enjoyed a mixed session with the Loretto girls this afternoon. Luckily the rain held off and we had fun together. One aspect we were working on was passing the ball and then getting into a good space. We also focused on passing the ball to the player in the best position. We enjoyed the session and some delicious match tea afterwards.

One aspect we were working on was passing the ball and then getting into a good space. We also focused on passing the ball to the player in the best position. We enjoyed the session and some delicious match tea afterwards.

The Cargilfield and Loretto Under 13C teams met for their fifth encounter of the season, the penultimate meeting of the series. Loretto proved to be a tougher side in this match; robust in defence and determined in attack. The Cargilfield boys stood up well to the test, Jaime and Joel winning the midfield battles more often than not and distributing the ball with some effect to the forward and wings. On the wings, Jack and Will used the space well, either dribbling forward or redistributing into the D. Once again Oliver did a marvellous job up front to make room to shoot at goal and was rewarded with two goals. All of the boys worked hard to win the ball when Loretto was in possession, tracking back and aiding the defenders where necessary. In defence, Monty and Findlay were called upon many times to stop attacks and stood up to the task well. In the second half shots on goal were more plentiful and goalkeeper, Leo, needed to make some good saves to maintain the lead.

The final score was a 2-1. Well done to all the boys for the tremendous work rate they demonstrated.

U11As Netball vs. Bellhaven

The U11As are getting ready for the tour and welcomed Charlotte as our GK and captain this week. With an incredible start from Cargilfield we dominated the first half with great movement from the team when we were on the attack. Clemmie (player of the match) was unstoppable as GA and we were 17-2 up in the first half. With a change in positions the team showed how skilled they were as players and we managed to win 21-3.

U11Cs Netball vs. Bellhaven

The teams were well matched this week and the game started with 2 all in the first third. However after a team talk the attacking girls were able to get into better space and soon the ball was moving up to the shooting end with great shots from both Matilda and Arya (Captain). We gained the lead and the defence did amazingly to defend it. Particular mention goes to Famike (player of the match) who did some great interceptions. Final score 8-3 to Cargilfield.

U11Bs Netball vs. Cramond

The U11Bs had a difficult start with the Cramond girls on top form in the first quarter and we struggled to get into space. However the girls then focused and had a great strategy in the second quarter which meant the ball was moving better thanks to Cara (player of the match), Georgia and Valentina. Amenah did some fantastic shooting and we were soon in the lead. The defence, Cicely, Lulu and Francesca intercepted continuously and prevented cramond from scoring. The final score was a win to Cargilfield 17-8.

Today the 3rd Girls were eager to get on the court and play Fettes. The game began with clean passes and intimidating teamwork, allowing us to get in front in the first quarter. Consistent passes and intercepts made in the middle of the court by Hannah, Malayka and Caitlin slowed the play increasing our chances of shots for goal. By the second half the girls were exhausted due to rough play by Fettes, but remained strong and significantly closed the scores thanks to Rose and Evie. Without the strong defence line of Lottie and Sabine the number of shots scored by Fettes would have made for a disappointing end score. Well done to all the girls, it was a strong and pleasing game.

Final score: 14-17 (loss)

This was our 4th match of the season against Fettes and currently we were 2 -1 ahead. However, today was not going to be our day. Fettes took a commanding lead from the start. Our marking around the centre was not as tight as it should be, Fettes were on point and their shooters were fantastic today. By the end of the first quarter and despite some sterling work particularly from Rosanna at GD and Flora at WD they were 5 goals ahead. We picked up the pace in the 2nd quarter and managed two goals apiece (with both Clemmie and Laura scoring) so at least the difference between us didn’t get wider. Calia was also working really well at GK. By the third half we were seriously flagging and it was showing. Fettes were now steaming ahead despite the best efforts of Bethany, Saphira and Izzy on the wings. In the final quarter we managed another 2 goals but to be honest we were no match for Fettes today who thoroughly deserve their victory.

Final score

Cargilfield 8, Fettes 18

This was always going to be a tough game given we drew 0-0 at the IAPS Qualifiers but we found ourselves 3-0 up at half time which probably took us by surprise.  Our first goal came from Glen receiving the ball on the edge of the D from a short corner and he passed it across to Cody who was free to play a fierce shot back towards goal which deflected off a defender’s stick into the goal.   Charles, came off the bench to set up the second and then was free to slot home after Glen made a great run down the right.

In the second half, we went from three in defence to just two in order to give our midfield more support.  However, Belhaven pressed us early on and our midfield didn’t work back hard enough in defence. This left Albie quite exposed and despite being quite heroic, Belhaven got it back to 3-2 following a well-worked goal and a penalty flick for a shot hitting our defender’s body on the line. Cody scored a terrific individual goal to give us daylight but even though we passed it around nicely between Ollie and Harry at the back,  we stopped passing it properly further up the field  and lost possession too easily.  Albie was on hand to make a number of saves and bail out his sleepy defence out and  Ollie made an unbelievable stop on the line after Albie made a charge out of his goal.  Luca and Charlie tracked back well in midfield in the final 10 and we managed to hold on but our disappointing defence, combined with Belhaven’s ‘never say die’ attitude and determination in the second half, meant this really was an exciting game.

A very good lesson for the boys about marking tightly and tracking back when we lose the ball.  It was very pleasing that Albie, who has been somewhat a spectator in many of our matches this season, to feel more involved in the game and for making a huge impact for us defensively and for that he was awarded Man of the Match.  Special mention to Cody for his goals and his determination to get back up and dust himself off when he was on the receiving end of some tough challenges today.

39 string players from P3-F8 attended the Kilgraston Strings Day on 1st March. At Kilgraston we split into 3 ability groups and rehearsed music preparing a concert at the end of the day – some pieces involving all 200 players and others just one of the groups. The Advanced Group’s performance of a selection of tunes from ‘LaLa Land’ was particularly enjoyable. Well done to all the participants who managed to prepare the music in just one day and thank you to all the parents who squeezed round the edges of the chapel to hear the concert. I’m sure you will agree that the children achieved an amazing amount in a short space of time.

It was a pleasure to welcome Paul Askew to Cargilfield to preach in Chapel this morning. Paul is Head of Admissions at Clifton College in Bristol and was previously Director of Sport. He spoke to us about making mistakes and learning from them and trying to do better next time. All of us will find something we are good at if we keep trying different things and don’t worry about making mistakes.

Risk Assessing the Nursery Garden - The children have created their own risk assessment for the garden. They use it every day to check the nursery garden before all the children go out to play. A group of children go in to the nursery garden with a member of the nursery staff to check for things like; whether the nursery garden gate has been closed, any litter has been left of if there are any broken toys in the garden.  A great example of the children taking ownership of their learning environment!  Well done nursery!

The Friends of Cargilfield Quiz night was a huge success last night. Sold out, lots of fun and the winners were very pleased too by the look of things! Thank you to everybody who came along and to the Friends of Cargilfield for all their hard work organising the event.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the children took part in the ‘Wee Wanderers workshop’ at the National Gallery of Modern Art 2. It was a great opportunity for the children to experience the fantastic sculptures of Eduardo Paolozzi and Anthony Gormley and to participate in making some sculptures of their own.

A super day out and thank you to the staff at the Gallery for looking after us so well!
